I remember looking at it in game magazines. Too bad it didn't to too well (compared to PSX). I wish Nintendo would've made the N64 CD-based. would've did A LOT better.

I remember reading about the NU64 in Nintendo Power. Damn, that article got me so excited, lol. And I remember on one of Nintendo Power's New year edition, the cover said "Happy NU Year!" LOL. I thought that was like the most clever thing of all time... Lol

It's easy to look back on it and say they should've done things differently. But at the time, it was a smart choice to use cartridges.

What was the first time you heard about it???

Mine was in a christmas toy catalog. It named a terrible price tag of $300 dollars or something.

Later, a guy that used to have a SNES said he was gonna get a PSX. I asked him why not to wait for the N64, since it was 64 bit. "Becoz I heard that it has 2 32 processors, 1 for graphics, 1 for sound". I guess he confused it with the Jaguar. :D

What advantages do cartridges have over CDs besides loading times? If Nintendo would have used CDs, all of the best games on psx (and there were tons of good psx games) would've been on N64.

Not all. You don't see all the PS2 games on GC. And that's not because of the mini optical discs.

But I agree, CD based would have been better. But I really like my cartridges for my N64. Feels cool. :)

What I mean was like, companies like Konami, Squae, Enix, Capcom, etc would have developed for N64 if it was CD-based. It would have been the only system around besides Saturn. Imagine all of Square's games on N64 (FF7-8, Tactics, FF Anthology, FFC, Xenogears, Chrono Cross, etc.) and other great selling titles like MGS, RE series, etc. Dragon Warrior 7 was the best selling PSX game of all time, imagine that on N64.

Look at the situation:

1) No CD-ROM based console has ever done even remotely well
2) CDs had offered absolutely nothing to improve the gaming experience
3) Cartridges were more than enough space to hold the current games
4) CDs require long waiting times which take away from the gaming experience

Can you name one reason to go with CDs at that time? I can't.

Yeah, you got a point there. But Sony took the chance and went with CDs for the PSX, and it has produced some of my most favourite games of all time, and some of the best selling.

I liked the '64 cartridges. They were more durable and lasted ALOT longer than a CD. 1 little scratch and(sometimes) your game could not play again until you got it cleaned somewhere. Plus, the '64 gave us some of the best games ever and defined and redefined many genres. Remember its QUALITY OVER QUANTITY!;)

Did you own a PSX, or are you just saying the stuff about a little scratch affecting the game because you do not like Sony? Because I'll tell you, I had sooo many scratches on my PSX games, and they all played great.

I've never owned a PSX or PS2. I've always been Nintendo only.:D The reason I said that was because I have seen some people with PSX games that only had a scratch or 2 and it wouldnt work right. But its just MY opinion.

I wish they would have kept the name. The logo looks so cool. Maybe they could have done some 3D dealies with it.
