GameCube Successor in Development
Nintendo collaborates with NEC.
Bloomberg is reporting that Nintendo is planning to collaborate with electronics giant NEC on the creation of the GameCube's next-generation hardware successor. The home console, which sources have indicated could debut in 2005 against Sony's PlayStation 3, is still without an official title or codename.
NEC previously supplied the graphics chip for Sega's Dreamcast and Nintendo's GameCube, and has recently invested 40 billion yen into the creation of a new production factory in Kumamoto, Japan.
NEC is working on developing a system LSI that would serve as the core of the new game console.
The continued Nintendo alliance with NEC comes in response to Sony and Toshiba's stronghold on the videogame market, according to Bloomberg.
Yes, ArtX etc. made the chip, but NEC did actual production. I think they will have more involvement in other areas of cube2 this time./\

Nice. But that's 3 years away.
YAY!
Of course, let's hope the Xbox 2 doesn't sell like PS2.... and Playstation 3 doesn't sell like it's predecessor has.. or else Nintendo 5 won't sell well. ;_;
Well, at least it's better than that "I-MASHINE!" crap. ;)

I dont even want to think about a succesor to Gamecube. Im just looking forward to 3+ more good years of Gamecube Gaming. Screw everything else(at this time)
It's kind of sad really, I mean, I was looking forward to Project Dolphin a lot because I thought it would kill the new Playstation. Now look, PS2 has completely owned everyone. :(
The only thing to look forward to, really, is ways of killing off that damn empire and gain back the hearts of many. But, nah, I'd rather think of how Zelda will play like. :)

you make it seem like Sony is evil and steals children...
why not try the Playstation brand? own all 3 consoles, and hold little bias towards gaming companies?

I think this time around Nintendo should release the Next Gen console around the same time the "PS3" comes out. This gen kind of screwed both M$ and Nintendo up by waiting over a year to release theirs. meh

Ok, I do like PS2 a little less. Why? I'll number them for you.
1. Stealing Nintendo Sales. Most people I know still own a Nintendo console, but not a Gamecube. They really do love Nintendo, but won't buy the gamecube, because they'd rather get the ps2 and not wait. And look, they have no money to buy a gamecube anyways. Now, I can't say this for all PS2 owners obviously, but you get the point. If Nintendo grabs more sales, more people will be able to enjoy their games. Nintendo will then boost the amount of quality 1st and 2nd party titles because they actually have very decent FUNDS, and I'll be really happy because I enjoy Nintendo games more than anything. I cringe when I see a playstation ad, because they just don't need anymore sales. They're monopolizing the market.
2. Most PS2 fans are discriminatory to individuals who don't show much appretiation as they do for the PS2. *looks at Stu* ;)
3. I honestly couldn't sit down and waste a night with friends on a PS2. Not even close compared to what I could do on the GCN or Xbox. With Xbox and GCN, in fact, I would play for more than a day.
4. Nintendo 3rd party would suck ASS. Shiggy knows how to work a Nintendo console, but I don't think he'd be able to do anything as well on another company's console.
I could seriously swear I'm the only one who owns a PS2 and doesn't like it as much as the other consoles. Who cares? I just want to see my favourite company do the best.

That one is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO true when I'm around my PS2 loving friends. Even at school I get dissed if I say something bad about PS2 to almost every "person" in that damn building. tsk tsk tsk:shakehead:

Like Jason said, screw the future consoles. Gamecube is only a year old! Mind if we have some time to enjoy Gamecube first, Nintendo? :)

I hope Nintendo's next gen system comes after the X-box 2 and PS3.
That way we get the best graphics(And more people will want it beacause it's newer),and a lot of games for the Gamecube.
Maybe the next Nintendo system would be backwards compatible(One could only hope)

Dyne I'm with you man, I have a PS2 and a GameCube, and before I got Metroid, I would have said PS2 is better. Now though I definitely prefer Cube to my PS2, which I still like a great deal, but with Zelda coming soon, if I had to pick just one it would definitely be Cube. Hopefully, if it is only going to be 3 years until the release of the next Console, Nintendo will develop the next Zelda to be the launch title and release the system as close to PS3/XBOX2 as possible. This would make the initial sales of the system much much better than they were with the Gamecube... well in my opinion anyway.

LOL. That would never happen.
Hmm... why does everyone call these the Gamecube TWO, and the Xbox TWO? They're probably not going to hold the namesake of their predecessor just because the playstation is bland and will use the generic name over and over.

And win the console wars over and over.........
;)
I think that it will be Xbox 2... But not GCN2... I think it will be named after an animal. Like a donkey or a toad.

Gamecub2 is a tentative title. Like Zelda GC. I only use it because there is no name. I doubt Nintendo would use it because they rely on their company name to sell. Though I know people who didnt even know MS made xbox and were planning on buying it.
I think people would buy cube2 for the Nintendo name and Xbox 2 for the XBox name. Playstation is somewhere inbetween, I mean you MAY buy it cause its sony.

Ditto! I've got WAY too many good games to play right now to be thinking about future consoles.

wow...you really are a hater
SCEA bland? Try smart and creative. The knew that with the success of the Playstation, a lot of casual gamers would instantly recognize the name 'Playstation 2' as opposed to something different. I know people who, when asked about 'Gamecube', have to ask which company makes the system. Also, SCEA has easily the best, most creative, and funniest damned advertisements (especially commercials...I just saw the Santa Claus one the other day...you should check out the SOCOM, Ratchet and Clank and ATV Offroad Fury ones...as well as oldies like the original Crash Bandicoot commercials) in the industry.
and how is the name 'Playstation' more generic than 'Nintendo Entertainment System' or 'Super Nintendo Entertainment System' or 'Nintendo 64' or even 'Gamecube'?
Bah, forget it...I can tell when it comes to gaming, you're not one to be part of any kind of intelligent conversation.

At least Nintendo put their name in their console name. Although not many people name it.
CubeMan, I think the next Zelda will be released on the GameCube. I'm hoping for a SpaceWorld 2000 style. :D
Of course, the sequel to that as a launch game... together with a new Mario game...

They restarted the beginning of gaming. After the crash, they were the ones that brought back gaming in all its love and glory:D (From what I know, if this isn't true, then meh)

Hey Stu, easy on the defensive.
And technically, it is called the Sony Playstation 2. Not just Playstation 2.

Like I said, nobody cares if its sony. Nintendo uses its name as recognition. Sony uses 'Playstation' as its recognition.
Yeah, by around Playstation 7 I think it will get old--if the fans like the name so much. It was a good name for a first console, but hey, how do you know Nintendo didn't name it way back when? Oh well.
Oh yeah Stu, you know what they say about idiots. They bring you down to their level and beat you with experience. I suggest you stay away from idiots like me.;)
I think that Nintendo has to promote their next console as a powerhouse machine. If they can wait until M$ and Sony release their console specs and then produce a machine more graphically powerful it would win over some of the Microsoft fans. The people I know are attracted to the xbox because of it's superior power. But, this time they need to release it at the same time as Sony...that way sony won't get the 1 year leap that detirmined the fate of this console war. All the consoles are good, but I'm a nintendo fan at heart and I'd like to see them come out on top.

Actually "Nintendo" has been usnng NP to "Probe" GCN owners to see f they want backwards compatibility (the answer is an ovious resounding YES!) and that brngs in the name GCN2.
If the system i backwards compatible (a la PS2 GBCV GBA) than they'll want a name that
's easy to understand, GCN2 woudl work GameCube Mark II (with the roman Numerals0 would sell really well for astehtics, and GameCube Model II would have that ":retro-cool" sound of TRS-80 Color Computer 3.
I could see some variation on the GCN's name, and even if it isn't GCN2, mabe "Super GCN" like SNES? The SNES orignally was PLANNED for Backwards compatibility, but it faild, maybe the same thing will ouccr with the GCN but succeed, I'd personlly callt he Next_gen nintend Console "Nintendo GameCube Mark II" to show tha it's a step up, but not an entirley new system, and the new XBox I'd call "X Box Squared", maybe I'd do the same for the GCN.
Also Nintendo has filed a Lawsuit against Sonyf or the "Playstation" name, I don't have much info, but aparently the lawyers said Sony took the name that belonged to Niuntendo, not the other way around so the Big "N" is sueing for dmaages. If they win (Meaing no cash settlement), you may see a "nintendo Playstation" after all. Crash if you have info please share, it'd be funny if the PS3 has the Big "N"s name on it rather than Sony's.
