Can anyone suggest a good mouse (not laser) that has three buttons (not inc. the scroll button) and a scroll..?
um.
might i ask why anyone in thier right minds would not want an optical mouse?
i didnt even know they made the old crappy ball ones anymore.

I heard that they were really hard to use with games..? Like lifting the mouse off the table would result in the cursor moving accross the screen.
no.
opticals are best for games. MUCH MUCH MUCH more precise
smoother. eaiser to use. never need cleaning
there was some problems with opticals in games when they were first being made at the start.
they've long since fixed such issues.
the one i use now. NEVER had a problem with in any game ever. its never twitched, its never gone off track. its been perfect.
Logitech Duel Optical. (2 finger buttons, scool bar/button. and a thumb button)
the one im getting for chirstmas .... Logitech MX500 (2 fingerbuttons, scrollbar/button, button above scroll bar, 2 buttons below scroll bar, and 2 thumb buttons :D )
i prefer logitech over anything else. never had a problem with anything they've made. hate the MS mouses.
and i hate Cordless mice, no point in em, always right by the computer.......... Batteries run down. when batteries get low, mouse will start going funny untill batteries get repalced. just not worth getting a cordless

Thanks for the heads up. Just out of curiosity though... If you've played Counter Strike before, how well does the mouse work with the game?
i've played it. mouse worked perfectly (hate the game tho. never played much of it)
but i play FPS online for PC all the time.
Quake 3, now UT2003 battlefield 1942.
the mouse is best for FPS online
i mean, once you use an optical mouse, you'll seriously wonder how you ever did without, you can aim quicker and more accuratly, if your sniping, and you want to move it just a hair, you can do it.
i remember when i used a ball mouse and i was sniping one on game, i tried to move a hair. and the damn ball would get stuck, and have to move it a bit more, then it would go too far.
*mumbles*
you'd never want to have a ball mouse again, i dred going to someones house and they have a ball mouse. i yell at em. hehe.

woudl be my answer.
i use nothing but logitech for mice. hell. my keyboard is logitech. my ps2 steering wheel is logitech. i never seen another company better then them for mice.

Scroll bar: Can people be any lazier?
Bunch of other Buttons: Why?
Mac mice don't have any buttons. The whole mouse is one large button I guess. You just click anywhere on the mouse.

a liittle off topic but i just had to ask.....logitech optical usb mouse works with PS2 right, I've heard they were a good choice to use if you were to use a mouse with the PS2.

weak case in trying to defend a innovationless, optionless boring mouse. ;)
yea, lets take away the things that make life easier. i mean why would we want a scroll where we can sift thro long documents easily, why would we want the extra buttons.
oh wait. heres a pertty good reason....
GAMES.
mac mouse for games... SUCKS. plain and simple.
other mouse.
left click = FIRE
right click = jump
scroll = sift thro weapons
other buttons = alt fire, zoom, crouch, many other things that make games easier.

I play CS all the time at my school. We have a club that is dedicated to gaming and CS is the most popular game on campus so I play it quite frequently. I used to play with my stock two button plus scroll gateway mouse. It was a ball mouse and I had to keep cleaning it. I bought an MS optical mouse, the four button plus scroll variety and have never been happier. I noticed an immediate improvement and NO CLEANING!

That's great. I guess I should either go with Microsoft or Logitech for mice right?

I would go with a Microsoft laser mouse. I've had one for 2 years now and it is simply the best mouse I have ever used.
Here is a handy little guide that will help you find the best mouse for you (assuming you get a MS one):
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouse/guide.asp
Here is the one I own:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouse/ie_info.asp
It's pretty much like that, only difference is that mine is an earlier version and a tad smaller.

yes, thoes are the 2 tops.
i say Logitech is the best tho.
i find they have MUCH MUCH MUCH easier and better driver support for thier mice.
i've never had anything go wrong with any of my logitech mice.
i mean i bought a $15 cheap logitech optical mouse a while back, for work. and its been beat on, tossed around, droped on the floor, its almost black with dirt, it was white when it was new.
and it still runs like a champ.
Basically i suggest you go out and find the one thats most comfortable for you, goto some stores, look around.

Thats the mouse i have right now. Duel Optical. has 2 lasers. hehe. :)
and for christmas im going to step up to...

dats my mx500 *drools* dat baby is loaded with buttons. 2 thumb, 2 finger, scroll, and 1 above, 2 below the scroll. :)

That's mine. Picked it up for around $20 on-sale. They can be found pretty cheap since they are an older model, but they have five buttons, are dead accurate, and as far as I can tell, not much different than the more expensive ones.

Thats what the page up and down keys on your keyboard are for...
For games, yes, a Mac mouse would not be very good. Doesn't really matter when the computer isn't good for games either though...
But for general computer use their top notch.

Again, thank you Bond, Null and Jeepnut.
There's just so many .
I'll make my mind up pretty soon though. I gather you wont need a mouse mat for optical mice? What a relief!

oh yes, lets take our hands off the mouse, to use page up and page down, when we could do it much easier and faster witht he mouse  curse things that make life easier. damn them to hell. (specially when going thro a doc, highlighting, moving stuff, editing it)
hell man, why even use a mouse at all? everything can be done thro the keyboard. you just lazy for wanting to use a mouse to click. you should be using the keyboard.
a mac mouse looks pretty. period. thats about it. it has 1 function, click.

You don't 'need' one, but I prefer them with a mat.
hehe, honestly im not tryin to disagree with everything bond says....
but i hate mouse pads., they tend to limit the movement, without a mouse pad i can move the mouse farther along the desk without it falling off the edge of the pad or having to pick it up and put it down in the middle again.

Isn't it ironic? A mouse that serves it's intended purpose...
Anyway...
ShadowLink, you may need a mousepad depending on the surface of your desk or where ever your computer is planted. Is it a glossy surface? Is it one general color or are there distinct differences?
If it's glossy or something, the mouse may have trouble tracking because the laser could reflect. Also, if surface is all one color, like pure white or something, the mouse could have trouble distinguishing it's location.
