I've only played this game through once... and I enjoyed it quite a bit! However, there are a few downsides.
First off, I'll show the "numbers".
ALL RATINGS OUT OF 10
Graphics:--------- 9
Music:------------- 8
Sound Effects:--- 9
Controls:--------- 9
Battle Systems:- 9
Characters: ----- 10
Story: ------------ 9
Replay: ---------- 10
The graphics for the game are fair considering the PS2's abilities... but GREAT considering how many unique characters there are in the game (120+). I'm including the 108 stars, the various villains, and the average townfolk. Konami had quite a bit of work to do... and considering the task, they pulled it off AMAZINGLY.
I've always downloaded Suikoden music.... it's always an instant classic! However, I gave it a 9 because of one... awful song. *shudders* It's the song played whenever you talk to a narcissist. Gah, that music hurts my ears! But, at least it does what it's supposed to do... Oh yeah, the music that plays during the Plain separating the Great Hollow, Lake Castle, and Zexen... I tell you, the song is saying "Donny Osbourne, Donny Osbourne!". *thinks* And the Great Hollow song stole a few keys from Ricky Martin.
The sound effects are pretty basic. I'd at least have to say they've made quite an advance from the first Suikoden (A dragon's roar sounded like an elephant, I swear). Now, the "Kueeeei!" from Fubar actually sounds like a "Kueeeei!"!
The controls are good, especially considering the leap from 2D into 3D. However, I warn you that you have NO control of the camera! *shrugs* At least it's one less thing you have to worry about.
The battle systems are as good as ever... and the best of any RPG I know (spare the second Suikoden). I just miss being able to control each character separately. As well, I miss the large scale battles from Suikoden II. The elite sqauds just don't match up to the full scale armies of the previous RPG! Aside from not matching the previous game, it's still better than everything else.
Let me spell it out... there are 108 characters, and you can't help but feel something for each and every one of them. Aaaand, if you've played Suikoden I or II, you'll say the characters of this game are a MASTERPIECE. I just regret how you can't use all the characters to their fullest capabilities. *hangs his head* If I only had that one character for a little longer!
Story: Suikoden II... best story ever! As for Suikoden III, it had an awesome "history story" with the Flame Champion. But, it's actual story doesn't seem as amusing for several reasons:
1) Character's feelings, histories, and futures weren't done nearly half as well as in Suikoden II. I might explaing this further if I make a Spoiler post.
2) The game is just too short. While there IS up to 100 hours of gameplay... the actual story itself could be summed up in 20 hours from one perspective.
3) The world is a LOT smaller in III than in II. One thing I loved about II is how you'd feel like you were far away from home when you were in a place like Tinto... but, the farthest place in Suikoden III is just a screen away.
4) Tying in with #2, the game ended too abruptly. The story itself could have been sooo much longer. I wanted to see more large scale battles... and further searches for assistance against the opponent. But, I guess I'm just spoiled from Suikoden II.
Don't get me wrong, Suikoden III's story is AWESOME. However, I've played Suikoden II, which I feel has a superior story.
Aaaand Replay... as stated before, this game has up to 100 hours of gameplay. You may think you've done it all, but you'll still be surprised if you search deeper into the game. Mind you, there are 108 "stars", and I got about 80 of them my first run through. I'm definately going to put more hours to figure out some side stories.
Aaaahm, I'm running out of time (dinner is calling). If you ever have questions like "What is the City-State of Jowston" or "Why is this character's identity or relation significant" send me a message at Cowsai@hotmail.com. I'd be more than happy to explain the greatest RPG series of all time (yes... BETTER THAN FINAL FANTASY!).
