View Full Version : Sega Sports Exclusive to Xbox & PS2
Earlier today in Japan, Sega released its financial results for the last six months, which showed that its operating profit was down 20 percent from the previous year, with revenue down 3 percent. The company still posted a net profit of 1.01 billion yen (about $8 million). Sega said it has been harder than expected to become a cross-platform publisher, and that its initial plans to transition from its hardware-based model were overly optimistic.
A Dow Jones report said that Sega is focusing on improving profits in its "loss-making" sports game operations in the US, which Sega has had big hopes for. While Sega doesn't plan to back down from its fierce competition with Electronic Arts on other platforms, it will completely halt GameCube sports game development as of next year.

Good news for Xbox and Playstation 2 owners I suppose, bad news for GameCube owners. :(

Good. This is a wise move considering they will focus on online play next year.

I hope they can somehow make it that each game shares one server so that PS2 owners can play against XBox owners...
that would be really sweet.
until then, I'll probably pick up NHL2K3 for XBox and an XBox Live starter kit...sometime within the next 2-3 months :p

Xbox Live is a closed network. Can't happen.

Bad news for cube owners? What cube owners? Didnt their games average like... 7,000 in the US for cube?
Of those who buy sports on cube, are likely buying EA sports. I suppose it will just be a biger monopoly for EA.

I owned NBA 2k2 and 2k3 for GCN (even though they are both gone now that I sold my GCN)
Any way you look at it, may it be a few gamers, or a lot of gamers, it's still bad news. What good can come from it? Sega fans who own a GCN now are forced to move to Xbox or Ps2.

If they can't compete with EA sports then they shouldn't. :p

Well...less profit for them, not that they made any in the first place. Just a waste of a lot disc.

Sega makes the top notch Basketball game, arguably the top notch football game, the best hockey game, and tennis game...
even if you try to rub it off as nothing, it's still a loss in quality sports titles that Cube-exclusive owners have no chance of playing at home

heh heh, it's times like these that it sucks to be someone with only one of the next gen systems. ;) I feel bad for you 1-console people...

Tennis wasn't on Cube.

It is bad news for the people that like Sega Sports and only own a GameCube.
But of course it's quality over quantity... haha.

Considering I only own a 'Cube this really doesn't matter to me too much. I don't have the best likening to Sega Sports games. Haven't played any, and probably won't. But I think they will fill in for not making sports games for the 'Cube with a few maybe exclusive games;). Hopefully they fill the little void with great stuff:D

I have one console and I couldn't be happier with it.
And Jonbo, this isn't good for Nintendo. It shows that Sega's products sell better on other systems. I really do not see and thing "filling the little void" from Sega on the GCN.

Haha... I don't know? I never play any sports game, but I agree, this is bad for those Cube owners that got a cube for sports (even though I think that was a stupid choice..)

I like GCN's controller MUCH better than Ps2's controller for Sega sports games... that's the only reason I had the 2k series for it.
I have to agree with Crono... I feel sorry for the GCN-only owners who like sports games. If I owned only a GCN, I would be seriously pissed. But, I guess EA's support could make up for it... But that's just me, I can deal with all of EA's games, and some can't. Cube just lost it's best basketball game. 100% of Cube basketball game buyers will be getting Live next year.

Jesus christ, it's not bad news for everyone.
Next time I'll be sure to list the thousands of people it's bad news for.
It's not bad news for me either, because I buy all my sports games on the Xbox.
But any time a console loses variety it is bad news.

You are ONE person, who as far as I know doesn't even like sports games. Sega Sports is not targeting you as customer.
eh. sega sports been exclusive for years and year and years.
saying a console wont get them not isnt THAT big of thing.
id like them to make a couple for online PC play tho. just to get some different choices on PC.
