View Full Version : Good and Bad news from Sega, mostly good.

SegaSports has 'halted' development of Sports games for Cube for the year 2003 (i.e. NFL 2K4, etc.)
Now, I dont know if this upsets you...I doesnt upset me. Not many people bought their Sport games for cube anyway, so apparently not many will care. Besides, NFL2K3 is nothing to brag about.
Now for the better news:
"In the press conference, Sega COO Tetsu Kayama mentioned that their major game titles will be going multi-platform in the future, such as Virtua Fighter and Sonic, in order to maximize sales. Sega is also considering porting certain platform exclusive titles to other console systems, such as some of the Xbox titles. The Sega Sports division has incurred deficits of 6.1 billion yen this term, but the team is recovered and continue to develop future sports titles."
So, what does this mean? Probably the Next Sonic will be on more then Just cube, unless Nintendo strikes a deal. I dont think shenmue 2 or 3 will go on other systems, because they are published by MS. Yet, I know I would like many other PS2 exclusives.
=\
Well that's not good news either.
Well, at least we all know that Sega buyout was a damned rumour. ;)

Why is in not good news? You dont want VF5 on GCN? JSRF2? Shenmue 3 or 4 (maybe)?

I think all he payed attention to was the fact that Sonic might not be exclusive to NGC anymore, and decided to ignore the fact that it opens up a possibility for many other Sega games to come to NGC later on :p
I'm not a big fan of Sega games though... *shrugs* Virtua Fighter 4 was ok, but too hard... and I don't mean a challenge kind of hard, I just mean frustratingly hard...
NFL2K3 is a great football game (on PS2 at least), I dunno what you mean by NFL2K3 is nothing to brag about... I guess you just don't like football games :p
Anyways yeah neat and stuff...

I dont like this. Most of Sega's sports games are better than their EA counterparts, IMO.

Good news for me as I'm not interested in American sports.
VF5! Sweet.
Wots so hard about VF4? Is it performing the moves? Challenging the computer? Kumite? Challenging your mates?
I don't see anything frustrating about the gameplay, maybe because I excel at nearly all fighting games

Not exactly a problem for Nintendo. Considering how few titles were sold, it's not hurting them to lose it, and it's not going to hurt Sega either. Gamecube was screwed from the beginning for multiplatform sports titles. They are competing with Xbox mainly, and Xbox will always have the better graphics and better sound out of all 3 versions. On top of that, since Nintendo chose not to release the SD cards, they are forced to cut some features, while Xbox features a HD and allows you to save numerous franchises, seasons, and anything else your heart desires. Now with online play, people will either choose PS2 because that's all they own, or go with Xbox. It's not a bad system for all sports games, but it gets killed when it comes to the big sim games. Can't blame Sega here.
Porting isn't a surprise, considering many of their titles didn't do so well. JSRF comes to mind. Why not try putting it on other consoles? You never know, might catch on with a different crowd. Shenmue won't, and you know it. It's always been a game meant to be played on one system, through the multiple games. It's also a game that thrived on having cutting-edge graphics. Combine that with Xbox having the fewest limitations, and you know Shenmue III will be Xbox-exclusive.
VF would make sense to port, but they need to get it done before they're over-run by MK:DA, SC2, and DOA4.

Yeah, thats another point. Sega says the HD is must for Shenmue, or something like that.
Hm... no, I was just pondering the fate of the new Virtua Fighter RPG that Yu Suzuki is working on.
Shenmue 4 is not real. 3 is the announced last title, and it covers the last chapters. (which is a hefty amount, like 3 to 4 times the size of our beloved Shenmue 2!)

No Shenmue to date has required the HD. If Shenmue III does, he changed something big time. Up until now, Shenmue and Shenmue II have done fine on DC with a 128k memory card.

I'm not that great at fighters and I'm not a big fan of them, and learning all the movies and trying to use them and such when the gameplay is quite fast-paced was too hard for me... and in Kumite the difficulty went from easy to extremely hard once you get to 1st dan rank... ;o

heh
it just proves that some gamers are good in some games, and not so good in others...
you're way better than me in games like Grand Theft Auto, but I kicked a lot of ass in Kumite mode in VF4 :D
I got 7th or 8th dan or something I think...didnt' find it that hard...lots of fun though

What happend to "All sports, all systems"?
Well, I guess all you Cube only owners who like sports games will have to go back to EA.
To me, this is 100% bad news
1) They lose all thier Sega sports games
2) Lose exclusiveness to sonic
3) Gain some ports of games
Sega and Nintendo's relationship must be going down the drain.

Well ago Sega mentioned that they might release the next Sonic on PS2 as well. Also, they may choose not to halt the sports games (as far the article said, nothng if final on that subject), and if they do, it may be just for that year.

Spoken like a true Sega-hating fanboy.
Hate for Sega + news involving Sega = Stupid assumptions
But we always need someone from the other side to balance out my biased Sega praise.
Actually their bond is strengthening, but it appears top weaken because they're becoming more "multi-platform". Haven't you remembered F-Zero? Triforce ring a bell? Virtua Fighter RPG on the Gamecube?
Oh, right.

Ok then, this isn't Sega's fault... it's Nintendo's.
They should have begged Sega to keep making sports games for the GCN. If thier bond is in fact "strong" I blame Ninhtendo. Nintendo used to do this BS back with N64. That's why there were so many gaps in the releases of EA Sports games, cause Nitnendo didn't give a damn. Same with NBA Courtside.
Right now I'm pointing fingers at one of the two, and I can understand why Sega would drops sports games from gCN by thier own decision, but I can't understand how Nintendo could let them drop it if thier relations are that good.
If it wasn't for Vice City (and probably soon to follow Smackdown), Madden would be Ps2's best seller right now. Why won't Nintendo buckle down and just make a system compatible with sports games?
If I owned Sega, I would probably make the same decision, Nintendo isn't forcing them to do anything. Plus, either way, the sales on GCN are the worst.... AND on top of that, Sega has to work harder on the GCN version than any other version because of the disk memory restrictions and the memory card restrictions.
Thank you for helping me understand who to point the finger at... I'm almost near the point of boycott with them. Let EA can one sports game next year.

Pointing fingers, playing the blame game. You gotta be kidding me.
This isn't about friendships and childish games, it's business. As a EA fanboy, you should know Sega Sports' sales numbers on Gamecube. They're not good. And I know you know Sega's financial situation, hell, you probably memorized it. Yet somehow you think this has to do with anything other than business? That's just stupid.
Sega Sports games are selling like **** on Gamecube. Sega needs to improve their financial situation. How do you do that? By getting rid of the games that aren't selling. It's common sense. Nintendo doesn't care, why should they? It's not like Nintendo is losing anything here. No one bought the games to begin with. Nintendo isn't losing a big selling game, so it wouldn't pay for Nintendo to pay for the continuation of these games; they didn't sell when they were on the system.
And your logic of Nintendo making systems always has been, and continues to be the stupidest thing I've ever heard in my entire life.

This quote kills half your arguement all-together gekko... learn how to read the whole post, as for the rest of your mindless babble.

Is it? You relize before 1999, over 90% of the games I owned were sports games right? You also relize that owned a N64 2 years before I purchased a Psx right?
So, in other words, I know what the hell I'm talking about... and sadly you don't. You are just another stupid Sega fanboy pissed at the fact that Sega fails at anything they try.
Thinking from a HARDCORE sports gamer's standpoint, I know that Nintendo isn't trying to do have anything to do with the genre of sports games.
Look at thier first parties
What happend to Retro? Weren't they supposed to be making a football game? They trash canned that real quick. Then they turn around and sell Left field.... where does that leave thier first party sports games? Simple, they have none.
Then Sega announces that the whole 2k4 year isn't coming out for GCN? Why wouldn't Nintendotry to stop them? Yes, I'm an EA fanboy, but I think the NBA 2k series is simply better than the NBA Live series. If I had only had a GCN I'd be one pissed off man if I had to go next year only playing Live.
Then there's NFL 2k.. you know what I think of it, but at the same time, I know what you think of it. If you only had a GCN I'm pretty sure this news wouldn't make you too happy.... unless you like Madden more than you are letting me know. (You maybe like it, cause most Sega fanboys like to bash the hell outta EA games but they know they buy at least oen of them every year anyway)
Nintendo knew madden was coming out, and Nintendo knew EA would need more than 500kb to give GCN the complete game... but, they also knew how they could rip off us all by charging $15 for a 500kb card... ($240 worth of cards to equal one Ps2 card)
In the N64 generation, they knew they made the MISTAKE of releaseing such a lol memory card, and they chose not to fix it.... You feel thier decision was the right thing to do? Yes, because you are a EA hating Sega fanboy.
But to puit an end to this... My favorite genre of games are sports games, not many people here at GT can say that. I follow the games more closely than anybody here. I was also (at a time) a Nintendo fanboy.... so how the hell can you sit here and tell me how Nintendo is treating sports games?
It may sound dumb to you because it never really effected your precious Sega games... til now. Oh wait, now it doesn't matter because no matter what Sega does it's smart, and if EA has a problem with Nitnendo's hardware it's EA's job to fix it.
Sega could cancel every sports game for Xbox and GCN and you wouldn't give a ****... but if EA did the same thing you would be laughing your ass off.

Retro wasn't getting anything done. They canceled a lot of games, one of which was the football game. Most people didn't like Left Field either. Nintendo's best sports games didn't come from them. Nintendo's best sports games were Mario Golf and Mario Tennis, and both are still coming.

I buy Sega sports games for Xbox, I would care. And they did cancel them all for Gamecube, and I really don't care. Makes sense in my world. If EA canceled their sports games I would thank them for making the world a better place. But if Madden wasn't selling on the PS2, and it was canceled, i wouldn't care. It's like a system losing Britney's Dance Beat.
