I've read in a newspaper article it's excellent, and is as good as AOL 8.0. Some people think it's even better. This is for the default internet user though. I don't what an teenaged advanced internet user would deem it.

nah the new msn 8 internet provider thing, just as they have msn 7, i was just wondering if the upgrade is worth it, and better than aol? right now i my msn keeps screwin up, logging me off the net w/o any warning while aol is just a pain to keep updating every 2 months, by january there gonna have another one probably aol 10, pretty soon there gonna be makin 20 and 30's lol

I think it was referring to the e-mail program and paretal controls. And for regular people and parents who actually monitor their children's ventures on the internet, it is great. What the writer meant by better than AOL, was the main features are better (e-mail, parental controls) and it does this without the constraint that AOL has, i.e. all their own channels, links, articles, etc. And you know AOL, isn't really that bad. If it were, then why is it the number 1 ISP? The only people who put it down, are techies whose lives are the internet. It's harder for them to pull their illegal stunts and what-not and they don't like the constraint. And that's okay. I don't like it either. I don't their close monitor either. True, there are some things that are kinda lame, like making people use it's browser (although you can just open up the browser you prefer to use). But it is easy and simple to use and those are selling points for the majority because the majority aren't masters of the web. It's primary function is communication. For grandparents who live far away from grandchildren, for relatives, and friends. You can easily IM, send pictures, and do general browsing. And for this purpose it's better than any other. stdPikachu, it wasn't designed for the intent of people like yourself and you know it so it's unfair of you to criticize it.

wow, posting a joke about aol, i didnt think it would lead to a math problem that had to be solved...? lol anywho, in some ways, msn is better than aol you can close the main window and you can be on ie and not get kicked off the net like you would if you did it to aol, which i think sucks. and also you have to go through 7 annoying steps to get on through aol... which is worse., msn is quick, easy, less misshaps (on a good day) and we can send COOLER EMAILS!!!:roll: :D

Yes, I do know, AOL really is that bad. Where do I begin? Terrible bandwidth (I have NEVER seen a connection on AOL dialup faster than 33 k), stupidly high latency, endless adverts, crap browser, god awful customer support.

And believe me, doing "illegal stunts" are no more difficult to do on any ISP than another. True there are some that have blocked groups like alt.binaries.pics.animalsfsckingchildren, but really all you need is an internet connection. Full stop.

Parental Controls are a joke (on AOL), they're so easy to get around it's not even funny. As long as you use the right words to search for things you can find just about anything, with a little extra effort of course.

You're right. At that point it's in the hands of the parents to be responcible for their children's online journeys.

Actually, I always get 49k. Perhaps it's just your area, eh? And the browser is actually very impressive. I get pretty fast speeds for it being a dial up. And I've always received great customer sevice. I get e-mails back within 24 hours. But then again, I have a Mac, so it's only natural that I get better results ;) Maybe their European extensions aren't as good as the U.S.'s? :confused:

Uhh, maybe the Crown Victoria and Thunderbird cost as much as a Ferrari but I think their the only models that get that high... :unsure: And I don't understand your helper rant. Are you referring to the manual? If so, Ford is only being responcible. You think for the price you pay for a Ferrari they would give you a "helper" as well.

I don't know what FUD means but I agree with regarding the agressive marketing issue. If you haven't heard there are two individuals here in the States who are collecting their junky CDs from people around their world. When they get a million there going to take them to AOL and dump them all outside the front office.

It wouldn't matter what ISP they had. Downloading music and applications on dial-up is going to take a long time no matter what. I'd advise they make friends with someone who has cable and a CD burner.

Not everyone has broadband Pika, it's not as simple as clicking the browser and it simply popping up. For dial-ups you have to type your screen-name and password and I'm guessing that's equally easy on all the ISPs so...

But for people who haven't been born into a world that is run by computers, it's not as easy Pika, are parents and grandparents aren't as skilled on the computer because they didn't grow up with them. It's all balanced however. We don't even have half the imagination or creativity they did. Everything is thought and done for us.

Yes, and because they know no better, the easiest to use application is the one they're going to initiallly want. As they advance they may indeed want something else and have new opinions about AOL.

And for someone who didn't grow up with computers it could be difficult. AOL has all that stuff built in. As opposed to three separate applications for mail, IM, and internet.
