Nintendo Australia has confirmed that GameCube will be launching down under on the 17th of May, just 2 weeks after the European launch. As with the European launch, 20 games will be out at launch and the system will be available in two colors: Indigo and Black. Nintendo Australia won’t be setting a price but indicated you should expect to pay around 399 Australian dollars. Only 50,000 units will be available at launch, though hopefully more systems will soon follow. Thanks to Tendo Box (AKA CC Nintendo) for digging up the goods.

If by good games you mean Smash Bros. and Pikmin, then the explanation for that would probably be Nintendo doesn't want to release so many of their games all at once so they're releasing some a bit later (even though they probably could have released them at launch) much like they did for the Japanese and North American launches.
