Right. I've totally had it with the fscking hotmail site. Ages ago, it was telling me that it wouldn't work with opera (which, despite MS's protests, is a far more advanced browser than IE), and even trying with Mozilla brought up the same error messages.

Now I can't access the thing at all, because the site is so retarded it won't let you in unless you have cookies enabled.

But what's that? Oh yes, I DO have session cookies enabled, and just so I cold see how retarded this site was, I even set it to not throw away cookies on session end. But no, hotmail insists that I use a browser that it can actually "work" with, namely IE, which I refuse to use on principle.

Goodbye ****ing hotmail, and Mr. Gates you can take your ****ey spam infested webmail site and stuff it up your arse along with all the bloated huge pages ful of advertising crap, the dll's hidden in pages and your constant ****ing insistance that only browsers made by YOUR company can work with what is the most turgid webmail interface on the planet. It would give me no greater pleasure than to just kick you and your company's ****ing teeth in and then make you gnaw your own limbs off whilst I make you debug Windows in 3 hours lest your penis gets chopped off by a rusty breadknife.

**** you, **** your company, and **** your computers. Not now and not ever am I ever going to buy one of your products ever ever again. And no, I'm not even going to warez them either. You just aren't worth the ****ing hassle.

I think that Hotmail is a great site. I mean, I only use it occasionally, so I have no problems with it.

Hotmail is a terrible site. If it were my only source of e-mail, I would go crazy.

It's funny, though. I use Mozilla now (Netscape 7 demands too much of my computer), and I logged onto Hotmail just fine.

PLease explaing that, because I think that hotmail is great.... I just want to know why you don't like it so much.

I don't understand why you have such a grudge against using Internet Explorer. I assume that like on Macs, it's not as fast as the main competition Netscape. And the small, weakly pawns like Opera, iCab, etc. But it's compatible with most content and formats found on the internet so why not use it?

And why aren't you using the e-mail provided by your ISP?

I also hate hotmail. Everyday I get 30 new messages of spam. I try blocking it but it still keeps coming. I use Yahoo too. That's not too bad. Better than hotmail I guess.

People always hate anything that's popular. I don't see any problems with hotmail at all.

Hotmail runs slowly for me even when I'm surfing with my G4 at home on a cable connection. And highlighting all the messages for disposal takes a long time because I'll click on the box and then wait half a second while the entire line gets highlighted in blue before I can check the box next to the next message I want to delete. I can't for the life of me understand why it happens because it doesn't seem that complex, but it happens. I know it's not unique to my particular setup because the same thing happens on public computers at college, too.

And believe me, when you're using Hotmail, you have to delete a lot of messages.

I don't know about sdtPikachu, but I don't really hate Internet Explorer. I just don't think it's the best browser.

How much are you asking for a browser? I mean, Internet Explorer is great, IMO. I do not see ANYTHING wrong with it.

I do. Well at least I did some day... *tries to remember*
Oh yeah I hate it how hard it is to copy an url of a picture for example... that's one thing that's wrong with it.

Well, two things that I like in particular about Mozilla are that it suppresses pop-ups (haven't seen a single one since I started using it. I even visited a porn site to test it out and the results were great...um, that came out wrong...), and that it has tabbed browsing. There are other things, but those are what sold me. It's not like it cost me anything to switch.

Remember, just because I don't think that IE is the best browser doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it. It just means I think there's a better one.

That's not IE, that's God's way of punishing you for stealing someone else's work

It is easy, Angrist. All you have to do is right click a picture, click on properties, and then highlight the URL and copy it. Or you can drag the picture into the address bar, and the URL automatically appears.

I have been using Yahoo's email for about 3 years or so. I have a hotmail SN but I never use it. I hate hotmail. I just stick with my Y! mail. Only good one for moi.

If you get Mozilla or Netscape 7 (which is based on Mozilla), you can right click on a picture, and one of the options is "copy image location." And that's that. No opening new windows to see properties. Just paste it wherever you need it.

I'll be kind of surprised if IE doesn't have the same thing by now since it seems like a pretty good idea.

I used to use hotmail. Then I got tired of the unbelievable amount of junk mail i was getting. And it was so slow! So i switched to yahoo and have had very few problems since. I do recommend having more than one e-mail account though (nothing is perfect).
Also, i don't see many problems with IE. The popups can be pretty annoying but there are programs to take care of that (and if you don't go to many porn sites  ), you shouldn't have much.

Reasons I hate IE:

No tabs
No mouse gestures
Crap cookie control
Crap server filtering
ActiveX
Poor security
Very poor security
Piss poor security (maybe I should point you to some of the vulns in IE which can instantly crash XP, or launch malicious code... the list of vulns is endless)
Bad Java implementation
No pop up control or referrer logging
Unstable
Sod all options for anything
It's the least HTML compliant browser there is
It's made by microsoft
But what's most galling is people who say it's the best browser even when they've tried (at most) one alternative - netscape, which is coincidentally the worst alternative.

Reasons I hate Hotmail:

Slow, ad-ridden site
Slow mailer daemons
Spam
Poor security
Horrible EULA which grants MS ownership of my accounts content
More spam
Clunky, bloated interface
It's continual nagging insistence that my browser isn't up to it, since MS coded the site to make it as difficult as possible for non-IE users to use
Intrusive cookies
It's run by microsoft

If you must have webmail (sigh), stick to a site like yahoo who actually get it right, and don't sell your email address to spammers.

On a sidenote, RedHat 8.0 rocks. Stable as a rock, AA throughout (including all the text), looks better than XP straight outta the box, and far more usable once you've plonked all the scripts in place.

Windows can **** off right now.

And why aren't you using the e-mail provided by your ISP?

I could do, but why should I? I don't want a XXXX@zen.co.uk when I already have a xxxx@lex.tv and a xxxx@demolicious.org

The only reason I still keep my webmail accounts up are for chat purposes and using them as inboxes to direct all my spam/website memberships etc at so I can keep my proper email addresses free for proper email.

it's not as fast as the main competition Netscape

You're right. Despite all it has going for it (namely it being embedded into Windows and running all the time), IE is the slowest browser I have ever used. Netscape beats it by a shade, Mozilla razzes past it, and Opera, Galeon and Phoenix blow all of them away.

/me counts number of Microsoft products on my computer
= 0

1. Aren't you a linux user?

2. Why not create two ISP e-mail accounts? One for junk and the other for your personal life, i.e. friends, family, etc. Webmail should always be your secondary option. That way, you don't have to deal with compatibility issues and you can proceed on using your preferred browser. Just a thought/subtle reccommendation.

*applauds Jonbo*

Bet you still use Windows and Office though... ;)

Gamemaster:

The reason I don't use my ISP account(s) is that:

Until I got DSL, my ISP only provided webmail that was even worse than hotmail.
My DSL email account has a rubishy name, also I'm moving soon and so will have to set up a new email account, again with a crappy name.

I'll stick to my demolicious.org and lex.tv addresses for quite some time methinks.

And yes, I am a Linux user, but I don't see why this should prevent me from using Hotmail. True, I don't use any MS products, but the cost of my storage space and bandwidth is paid for by:
a) all the ads on the hotmail site
b) selling my email address to spammers

I think for MS or anyone else to suggest that there is only One True Piece Of Software For The Internet is atrocious. The internet was invented so it could be used by anybody, and it seems that MS are trying to do a damned good job of locking it down to their platforms only. I only wish more people understood this, because then I wouldn't have to explain my hatred to them.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I use a Mac and an internet browser called Chimera, which is a branch of Mozilla. I'm about as far away from Microsoft as one could get. :D

Xantar
10-29-2002, 07:36 PM
Chimera, eh? A branch of Mozilla, eh?

How is it? Do you think it would run on an old Mac with a processor speed of about 200 Mhz? Does it have anything Mozilla doesn't?

I'm always in the market for a new browser.

sdtPikachu
10-29-2002, 07:58 PM
There are lots of browsers out there based on Moz, such as Galeon (Linux/GTK) and Phoenix (Win32) which are stripped down versions of the full Moz... they usually retain all the useful stuff and ditch things like email and IM clients in favour of a leaner and faster browser.

Not used Chimera, but have heard many good things about it...

I'm about as far away from Microsoft as one could get.

: sdtPikachu insists he is further away :

Mind you, I have to use Windows for about half my time at work though :(

Xantar, I'm not sure whether you have OS X or not. I'm going to refer you to the page but it's OS X exclusive.

Just in case though, I'm going to you give the link, if nothing else you'll get an interesting read :)
