My opinion on the course Metroid Prime took:

The thing that really got me hooked with Metroid 3 (Super Metroid) and, to lesser extent, Metroid 2, was the atmosphere of the games, not so much the gameplay itself. A lot have people have said that they would have preferred a 3rd-person adventure to an FPS, but in my opinion the Metroid universe could still be captured perfectly.

In the Metroid games there was never any human interaction, except perhaps for the cut-scene at the start of Metroid 3. It just had this awesome, creepy feeling when you were walking around this quiet space-colony, with broken glass and dead bodies, but no other sign of life. Then you find the Metroid. You go over to pick it up, but the door locks behind you. You were like "What the hell?", and then all was quiet for a few seconds. Next thing you know you're shooting the crap out of Ridley, and then when he flies off you must run for your life before the whole place explodes!

Things like that false sense of security, the sense of loneliness, finding awesome secrets, falling into traps, and finding new items and guns is what makes Metroid....well, Metroid. Some people are complaining that there's no way that Metroid can be done in a FPS, but to me, it never was about the style of play. Sure, that speedy 2D gameplay kicked ass, but really, it was the whole atmosphere that kept me coming back. (I wish I never sold my SNES, but I wanted the money). The other thing that really got me going in Super Metroid was the music (especially when you were close to finding a boss), so it had better be done perfectly in Prime.

With my disappointment in the new Zelda (which has been lifted over time, although slightly...), my faith now lies in the Metroid series.

In a FPS, you can't see what's behind you, your field of vision is limited (as in reality), you see things exactly as Samus would see them, and you're getting up-close and personal with enemies and environments, which can't be done to anywhere near the same extent in other formats, especially a side-scroller (like some people say they would like). Imagine you're walking down a long empty corridor, making your way to the door down the other end. You see the roof cave in in front of you, and some creature pounces on you. Sure, it's all happened before in Half-Life, but in the Metroid world we've yet to experience that kind of adrenaline rush while you're shooting wildly to save yourself.

I too would have prefered the new Metroid to be 3rd person view at first, but now that the game's finished and looking totally awesome as an FPS/FPA (or whatever they want to call it), I'd have Metroid no other way!

I hate the fact that Nintendo changed Zelda to this new look... but I still think it will be better than Metroid Prime.

Metriod Prime doesn't look the least bit interesting or appealing to me. Maybe that can change with reviews (look at what AC did to me!), but based off of previews it looks like garbage.
