October 18, 2002 - The opening of Nintendo's Cube Club here in Los Angeles, CA brought a wealth of new information regarding Retro Studio's highly anticipated Metroid Prime. Not only did we learn more about the origins of the new title, but we also uncovered important gameplay details. If you're a fan of the series, or even remotely interested in the forthcoming title, you must read on.

Priming the Story
On the company's promotional DVD, Nintendo revealed the timeline surrounding Samus Aran's new home in the Metroid universe. Where the next-generation 3D adventure was once believed to take place after Super Metroid, it is now apparent that it actually takes place after Metroid II: Return of Samus (GB/C) and before Super Metroid. The storyline is said to be the following:

"Samus's adventure on the Nintendo GameCube actually takes place in the past. After the events of the first Metroid adventure, but before Metroid II, Samus learns that there were Space Pirate vessels in orbit as she fought on the surface of Zebes. She traces one of these to an orbit around a planet called Tallon IV and discovers an enormous Space Pirate research operation in progress. The Space Pirates are experimenting with a dangerous mutagen called Phazon, combining it with local life forms as they try to rebuild their army. Samus must delve deep into magma-filled caverns, poisonous mines, and icy caves as she tries to stop the Space Pirates' sinister plan."

Faithful Gameplay
Samus devotees and die-hard fans who have adored the series for the last decade or so will be pleased to know that the introduction level to Metroid Prime that was shown at E3 (which you can see in entirety in our Prime Time Friday features) is essentially how the game begins. Samus Aran lands atop a space station hovering over the planet Tallon IV to investigate what the Space Pirates are up to. Equipped with the Morph Ball, Morph Bombs, Varia Suit, Ice Beam, and even Grappling Beam, the Bounty Hunter has everything she needs to explore the ship unscathed. What happens after she escapes? Die-hard fans would cry bloody murder before beginning their quests fully equipped.

It is good news then that Nintendo representatives allege that you begin with nothing. No morph ball. No bombs. No missiles. The smallest foreign entity on the planet could even take poor Samus down. Just as in the previous Metroid games, Ms. Aran must explore the unknown territory with the greatest care. Slowly, but surely, the pieces to her suit and upgrades will be found. Retro Studios and Nintendo have seemingly taken great care to comply to the usual progression of Metroid gameplay.

On Prime Time
Rumors once circulated that Metroid Prime was a sub 10-hour game. Nintendo representatives allege that this is false. There is a lot more gameplay time packed into the Retro Studios-developed adventure than gamers may think. Purportedly, 20-30 hours of gameplay can be expected depending on your skill level. This claim does not parallel the supposed 40 hours of gameplay time that was promised for Star Fox Adventures. It is a realistic estimate for first time gameplay length -- the time it takes to win through to the final boss figure. It doesn't even count the time it takes to complete it 100%. If this allegation holds true, the gameplay would be some of the longest in the series yet.

lol... panasonic tryin to promote an MP3 player there.....

using SD cards.... :rolleyes:

few thigs that just seem kinda stupid about that....

SD cards still dont come in a reasonable size. highest is like 564MB and its like over $300 for the stupid thing.

and if one is going to use SD cards for an MP3 player............. why the hell not just buy a pocket PC that uses SD cards and play the mp3's on there? then you can play videos too. and do much more.

still tho. no reasonable size for SD cards. id much rather have a 20gig mp3 player.

Speaking of SD cards:

Is Nintendo ever going to release an SD adapter? Or is that just vaporware? Or is it going to show up on their next console (there are rumors that Matsu****a would be willing to work with Nintendo again)?

I think its safe to say that the SD card wont make it on cube. For what reasons, I dont know, maybe the price...

It could very well end up on the next Nintendo system...

I read somewhere that Nintendo is claiming that Metroid Prime will take 30 hours for the "above average gamer."

Make that about 12 hours and I'll believe it. And hey, since there are said to be multiple endings, the game will probably occupy your time well enough.

Exactly. One rule is to never believe "how long games are."

"Eternal Darkness is a whopping 60 hour adventure!"

"Star Fox Adventures is a huge 40-50 hour quest!"

Metroid actually seems like a long game, what with the first space ship, then the planet, and the upgrades you must find.

True... I have been playing Super Metroid and suprisingly it's taking longer than I expected....(which is a good thing.)

At most, I predict it will be 20 hours which is fine for its genre.

No, it's more like

"A whopping 80-hour quest spanning over Two Discs!"

What happened to that?

Oh well.... *sigh*
