View Full Version : Kazaa - Dangerous to use?

Well I guess this applies to any file sharing program, but anyway...
Today in Computer class my teacher told me that a Kazaa user in Pittsburgh was sued by a couple of Record Companies. Why? For downloading their songs.
Apparently, Record Companies are now starting to attack random Kazaa users for downloading their music/media. The thing is, they cant sue the makers of Kazaa because they arent the ones who store all of the media files (unlike previous file sharign programs), Kazaa is just a program that is set up for people to share files, obviously. And since people are the ones who are ripping CDs and putting the music on their PCs for other people to download, then thats why these companies have started to do this.
Although, I think this is kind of dumb. Even though it is considered piracy, why sue somebody for downloading a song that they like? Even though the companies do lose...tons of..money..
And I also heard that a law might be passed in the US so that companies can actually search your shared folder for their music, as long as they dont alter it in any way...
So what do you guys think? Should companies just be able to sue random Kazaa users for downloading their music?

Hell no. What do they think computers were made for anyways? And we have had fairly complex discussions on this kind of thing before, like right when they shut down napster, how record sales drastically DROPPED. Just because people download music dosnet mean they dont go buy the record also. They just need to stop pissing themselves, and simmah down nah.
thats wrong btw. They arent sueing users that are downloading thier songs. because unless they have access to servers kazaa run on or are hosting a bunch of songs for people to download themselves. they dont know who is downloading what.
What would be happening is they are logging onto kazaa, searching for some of thier copywrited material, and are going after the Major users that have thier stuff for download.
say your on and have 50 songs by one of thier artists. that might be thier target. its now the downloaders. its the people putting the songs up for download.
i would say just turn your downloading off. or set your share file to an empty folder so no one can see what you have when they search. But that kinda ruins the whole idea of a file sharing program. heh.
The music industry went thro all this BS when Cassette tape recorders came out too.
i will always remember what the Lead singer of Smashing Pumpkins told the media when they asked him........ and i firmly believe it.
"Music will ultamatly be free in the future, the Music industry will have to make thier money on merchandise and concerts rather then selling the music itself."

*Changes download folder*
im not saying that them suing people is tru.
but thats how it would work. they would go on and see who has thier stuff for download and do something about that.
back when the Metallica vs napster thing was going on thats how they did it. they got on. searched and wrote down everyone who was having thier stuff up for download. not the people downloading it.
And if this is true, its not like they can continually do it over and over. It would be more of a method of trying to scare people into not sharing thier files. Cuz if no one shares. file sharing programs arent going to work.
Then it would revert back to the old days when we had to search FTP servers and try and get our songs. ahhhh *remembers the old days*

Hey, I dont share either, you know why? Because I'm on 56k. If I'm downloading from you and you're on 56k, cancel me, go ahead. if you're on bb though, who the hell cares? my 4k isn't going to be hurting you but when you dowload from me, you've taken all my bandwith up.
I understand the fustration that people may be going through when they have someone downloading from them who doesn't share, but imagine having a 4 meg file taking 2 hours to download because somone is taking up 95% of your bandwith.

Once I download things, I move them all from the shared folder to my own folder full of music and other files I hoard. :D
Selfish you say? No, just self centered. :p ;)

Just wondering... having those files isn't illegal if you have the original CD/LP/whatever?? So... if they sue you, you can just buy the CD and show it to them... :sneaky: Right?

As far as I know, KaZaa doesn't have their own "File Sharing Servers". Basically, you download directly from the other persons comp. KaZaa is basically just there so that you can actually get it from the other person. But my opinion on this matter. If they want to sue me, I will bring them down:D:mad2::unsure:

...Oh damn. I do download some songs... But if I get sued millions from a damn record company then my life is over... If this is true, then I am not gonna download anymore music. An MP3 isn't worth getting sued.

If someone tries to sue you you can just agree to stop downloading there music and get Kazza to ban you.
I company will only sue you if they tell you to stop downloading their songs and you don't do it.
Just like Videogame makers if you make a game(freeware) with Nintendo's characters they will threaten to sue you. But, if you take it off of the site they will stop threatening to sue you.
However, if you are making profit off of this game. Nintendo will sue you without warning.
I think it goes that way.

not exactly. there are servers. there is no central server. but there are servers.
thats why when you turn it on it says connecting. if there was no server...... connecting to what? and you wouldnt be able to see everyone else. unless your all linked together somehow.
once you start downloading its directly from the other person and it cuts out the server.
