This will probably be one of Nintendo's bigger projects.

September 19, 2002 - Earlier today in Sydney, Australia, Nintendo began filming the US commercial for its upcoming 3D first-person adventure Metroid Prime. IGN was on the set. We'll have a full report on the commercial next week along with first videos, extended details and more, but here's what we know so far:
Nintendo is clearly aiming to target the adult audience with the advertisement, which comes as something of a relief. The commercial is being directed by the stylistic Alex Proyas, who made both The Crow and Dark City. The spot will place an emphasis on looking through the eyes of lead character Samus Aran.

Filming kicked off in an abandoned power plant in Sydney, which has a dark and gritty feel to it. We've been told by the producers that it's the same place where the Wachowski brothers filmed the security shoot-out scene in The Matrix. It's very impressive.

The production team has thus far been shooting footage of a live action Samus (check out the sweet suit below) running around the environment. Lots of wire-work and blue screen angles have also been utilized, and we're told that massive postproduction efforts will bring everything together. We envision a complementary blend of live action and computer graphics.

This has only been a taste of what is bound to be one of this year's best game commercials. Check back next week for an an-depth look as we take you further into the set with new looks, high-resolution screenshots, video downloads and much, much more.

I know it looks a little weird with the bright suit in the Darker surroudings but on Film it should show up better, and theres nothing a little CG cant fix.

This could be either really really cheesy or really really awesome...

I'm hoping it's the latter of course...

Also consider that is trys to put you in the FP perspective, you probably wont see Samus unless she turns or a corner, or stop right at the edge that you see.

At least its a real suit and not cloth...

Well you know... It would be cheesy (cheesie?) if it was someone clunking around in some clunky plastic suit and shooting little stuffed doll metroids or whatever....

Like a Japanese 1950s sci-fi movie with bad dubbing and you can see the strings on space ships....

 Yes, that's why they hired Alex Proyas and went to Sydney to film the commercial.

I think any enemies would be done in CG.

Actually they went to Sidney to film because it's the cheapest place on the earth to shoot any kind of film. :p

No, actually, that would be canada. Im not making this up as a thing against candadians, Film makers actually ae making films in Canada, for the sake of cheap cost.

Anyway, they probably went to sydney for the Matrix Building.

Well, other than The Matrix, Star Wars Episode II was shot in Australia. So will Episode III. I think the Lord of the Rings movies were shot in Australia as well (which would explain why Hugo Weaving showed up).

Whoever went to Canada neede cities and an americanish enviroment for the movie. But Australia is the cheapest place to film in period. It's cheaper than in eastern europa, countries that let you film almost for free. Believe me I know.

They probably dont even need a certain area, they could have shot it in Redmond, or Texas. It appears that they need a building that had all the things they needed for the scenes.

Why are we even discussing price? It has no effect on the commercial.

I just hope Metroid Prime's commercial is better than Mario Sunshines'. I have seen many great commercials and my favorite is now Kingdom Hearts' commercial. Nintendo should make the commercial a bit... sexy.

Yeah, 'cause Samus in that big metal suit blasting bug bug creatures is very sexy.
