One of the best perks I got from writing fan fiction was cover art by N8. I liked the Perfect Dark one so much I use it as my desktop picture. As you can see, I'm kind of a minimalist guy myself.

If you look closely, you can also find the only digital picture of me in existence. Well, sort of.

GameMaster
09-24-2002, 06:42 PM
Xantar, you picture came as sort of a surprise. I wasn't expecting such a conservative appearance. I thought you'd have semi-long hair. Nice desktop. :)

Xantar
09-24-2002, 07:06 PM
Semi-long hair? Whatever gave you that impression? Do I come off as a hippy or something?

And yes, you knew that I wouldn't miss an opportunity to plug my fanfics. :D

Actually, that's because I never bothered to delete the Internet Explorer icon from my desktop. I use Netscape 7 which is conveniently kept in the Apple menu in the upper left.

I could probably use Opera, but I don't really feel like paying for a web browser.

Xantar, of all people I'm surprised to be hearing you stereotyping. Not all hippies have long hair. And no, I don't think you're a hippy. I guess I'm guilty of steroetyping also, when I assumed someone who's just not "another face in the crowd" should have something out of the ordinary for hair. I guess we both learned a lesson.

Maybe some of you might want to check this. http://www.vital-desktop.com/

You need a fairly good computer so it won't slow down too much if you have many aplications runing and the animation of your desktop.
It's a program that makes your favorite (any) screen saver run as your desktop all the time. You can disable the normal screen saver and run it as your desktop trough this program. It's amaizing and so relaxing to have the Plus! fish tank screen saver running in the backround on what I work. It's like I have a transparent plasma monitor, and a fish tank behind it. Just beautifull.

Here it is again. http://www.vital-desktop.com/

GameMaster
09-24-2002, 11:16 PM
Those screensavers are awesome!!! *Dashes to the new PC*

Xantar
09-24-2002, 11:24 PM
I wasn't stereotyping. I just couldn't think of any reason for you to expect me to have long hair except that you thought I was some kind of really liberal type like a "hippie or something."

But now my computer has had some kind of crash where it can't find the boot hard drive. I won't be able to use it again until I find a copy of a Mac OS CD and try to fix it. No more staring at Hikaru Shinsuke while I work. :(

GameMaster
09-25-2002, 12:06 AM
Is it in your funds to consider a new Mac perhaps?

P.S. Is Hikaru Shinsuke the white face on your desktop?

Xantar
09-25-2002, 01:05 PM
Not at this very moment, no. But if I manage to get a job this summer, I should be able to save up a few hundred dollars. A G3 on eBay goes for about $300. That's what I have my eyes set on. And then I think I'll get myself a copy of OS X.

And yes, that's Hikaru on my desktop. If you read my fanfics, you'll get to meet her and learn why she has a gunshot wound on her head. :D

GameMaster
11-12-2002, 12:27 AM
Are you saying you purchased it?

Null
11-12-2002, 12:57 AM
actually it is freeware.

1. its just a background pic.

2. themes to change the look of WinXP are free, and easy to find, dont even need software.

there are some that charge money, aka. WindowsBlinds but thoes arent exactly needed just to put a skin on XP.

this theme i found after searching once. i could find others that are free that totally overhall windows and make it seem totally differnt.

they're free, and ones like windowsblinds use extra cpu to run them. (not a lot, but still)

Dyne
11-12-2002, 01:13 AM
Bah! HELL if it is free. I imported a European game because my friend said you get a free windows theme. There's no effing chance it's freeware.

Oh yeah, it's not just a background pic. It's a whole package. You didn't notice it changes EVERYTHING, including default folder's icons? This is a polished theme; Nintendo of Europe payed this company a lot to get Gamecubes to sell. It's got everything: A logon screen, cursors, Mario's YIPS of joy, and even extras, like the ability to minimize to the top. This is not f***ing free.

BTW, could you please snag me a link to that xbox theme? ;)

Null
11-12-2002, 09:02 AM
actually yes it is free. you can go out and find everything you changed for free, only diff being you got it all in 1 package. (i was refering to the background as just being a background pic) one can obviously find that.

the windows skin, thoes are free, i found an xbox one easy as can be.

icon changers, also easy to find, i have many, but i dont like game themed ones.

logon screen. yes also free, but thoes arent the best things to mess with, you can actually screw up your system to the point where it doesnt boot by messing with that logon screen. but yea. you can find em.

you can also change the whole gui.

and btw, for the stuff i mentioned, you need no program to run any of it.

www.themexp.com has some. but its a slow site. annoying to work with.

or www.wincustomize.com

there are others. skinz.org. etc.

Dyne
11-12-2002, 08:28 PM

HOWEVER...

Once I aqquire enough revanue to finihs, I will BUILD a PC, I have a Non-Refundable copy of WIndows ME, which should be userful while learning Linux, which will be Dual-Booted with Eatheir Redhat Linux 8, or SuSE, I'm leaning more tworads RedHat though, and I'm going t pay the $70.00 at my local "Staples' for a Manual made out of this wonderful inventiona called "paper" that I can use if anything should go wrong, unlike Windoze which needs a 24/7 automated tech Support line and a 26 Volume "Manual" for each version of 'doze to be understood.

I love Linux, I can't afford a Mac, but I can make a WIntel PC into a LIntel PC very easily, without too much of a headache and unlike WIndoze Linux won't crash.

I've heard good thing about RedHat and SuSE both, which is why I'm consdierng both Distyro's and not Just RedHat. Although I've Heard RedHat is better for begginers with Linux, so I'm looking more towards Redhat, and I even have a comparison chart stashed away soomewhere.

I'll cook up a Desktop theme once my comp is back, not just a background, but a full theme, coimplete with Sounds and Fonts to match, I can't say what it is yet, but you'll be suirpised most likley I have a few ideas brewing.

i cant stay for redhat. but from experience installing SuSE....

you want your Windows to be installed first........ i did SuSE first once. and had to play around with mounting the drives on it for a long time to get to the windows stuff.

later on i installed after windows and found SuSE auto setup all the windows drives for me. saves a LOT of head aches. and i can hop right into my windows files and use what i need right off the bat from Linux.

also be careful with the boot program. i've screwed up both OS's before and had to reinstall both. I prefer to make sure i have a boot disk for both just incase something goes wrong.

And because mine looked so plain compared to everyone else's... I decided to make a few quick changes.

Damnit, ouy only get to see my Doze station now, since Adobe refuse to release a decent version of Acrobat for Linux.

P.S. nice to see you're having fun with *nix, Null. Any dependency hells or kernel panics yet? :)

Anyway, for what it's worth, here's my comparatively ugly Windows workstation:

FYI, GNOME 2.2 is out (http://www.gnome.org/start/2.2/).

Amongst various improvements to Nautilus and Metacity and new GTK extensions, it also supports transparent panels (http://vhost.dulug.duke.edu/~louie/screenshots/2.2/10.jpg) and scalable vector graphics (http://vhost.dulug.duke.edu/~louie/screenshots/2.2/18.jpg) realy quite nicely.

File size was too big. It's on my personal web space though.

Let me know if you need it in 800 x 600 and I'll put that up too.

its resolution is still a bit small. but i dont want it for the BG, want it to create a background using it. so it should work good in that size.

thanks
