And currently leaves Xbox Live going online last, but then again, the console came out last, and it'll still be the best online plan. That's no biggie though, Gamecube fans can laugh at the pitiful Xbox gamers for a whole 16 days! Fanboys rejoice!

Anywho, press release on live:

Xbox Live to Launch on One-Year Anniversary of Console Launch
The Next Revolution in Video Games Begins Nov. 15

REDMOND, Wash. — Aug. 13, 2002 — On Friday, Nov. 15, the one-year anniversary of the launch of the most powerful video game system on the planet, Microsoft Corp. will launch its Xbox™ Live online game service and propel the North American gaming world into the future of video games.
At launch, more than 5,000 North American retail outlets will begin selling the Xbox Live Starter Kit for a suggested price of $49.95 (U.S.). For the price of a new game, the kit includes a one-year subscription to the broadband-only service, the highly anticipated Xbox Communicator headset and a minigame so gamers can start playing with their friends right away. Retail programs will be supported by a multimillion-dollar marketing campaign that will include advertising, retail communications and promotional activities.

In addition, at least six Xbox Live-enabled games are currently scheduled to be available on Nov. 15, with more than 10 others to follow by the end of the holiday season. Scheduled launch games for Xbox Live are “Unreal Championship” from Infogrames Inc.; “Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon” from Ubi Soft Entertainment; “NFL 2K3” and “NBA 2K3” from Sega Enterprises Ltd.; and “Whacked!™” and “NFL Fever 2003” from Microsoft Game Studios. More than 50 Xbox Live-enabled games will launch during 2003, including “Halo™ 2,” “Counter-Strike” and “Star Wars: Galaxies.” More than 60 game publishers are currently working on Xbox Live-enabled games.

“We designed Xbox from day one to catapult console gamers online,” said J Allard, general manager of Xbox at Microsoft. “Xbox Live is the answer for gamers who want to take this next leap forward. Last year at this time, we took gaming to the next level by launching Xbox; now we’re in concert with our partners and the industry to ensure that Nov. 15 will once again be a great day for gamers and the industry. Xbox Live is the first unified gaming service that takes gamers beyond the box to a global gaming arena where they become the superstars.”

The Xbox Live service was part of the initial design of the Xbox console, taking into consideration specific feedback Microsoft received directly from gamers and game developers about what they wanted and expected from an optimal online gaming experience. Key to the service is the support of four datacenters: two in Seattle, and one each in London and Tokyo. These datacenters will enable Microsoft to assist publishers by managing the hosting, networking, security and billing so game creators can focus on awesome game content, and gamers can be comfortable with a single bill for all gameplay. In addition, gamers will benefit from key, consistent features of the Xbox Live service across games from all publishers, including these:
Gamertag. A player’s Gamertag will be the same for all games across the global gaming service.
Friends list. Players will be able to find their friends online and invite them to a game, no matter which Xbox Live game they’re playing.
Xbox Communicator. Voice communication functionality is integrated with all Xbox Live multiplayer games, enabling teammates and opponents to speak to one another during games. Key elements of this feature exclusive to Xbox include voice masking, global muting and parental control.
Matchmaking. QuickMatch allows gamers to enter a multiplay experience with a single button click, and with OptiMatch, an Xbox Live exclusive, players will be able to select games and opponents based on similar skill levels.
Ability to download content to the Xbox hard disk. Only Xbox enables console gamers to download and permanently store both free and for-a-fee content that can include new levels, characters, missions and statistics.

To date, more than 100,000 gamers have signed up for an opportunity to be beta testers for the Xbox Live service. Later this month, more than 10,000 of these gamers will be selected to participate in the final stage of the beta test.

Details for the Xbox Live service launch in Japan and Europe will be announced in those markets in the coming months.

GameCube will only launch with one title online though, and no other ones slated for release this year. While as Xbox will launch with 6 titles and a few more to follow this year. I think the two best games for the Xbox Live launch right now are: Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon and Unreal Championship. NFL 2K3 is good too. The press release forgot MechAssault also, that will be coming out on November 15th.

A 1-10 chance isn't too bad gekko, and you have to figure we've already made it past the first and second wave.

But it's launching with PSO. You seem not to understand PSO. It's the best online game ever made. I put over 200 hours into the first one, but got started months late. A lot of PSO fans put 600+ hours into it. I'm happy it only has 1 game, gives me more time for PSO.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost ReconPCand Unreal Championship.Getting UT 2003... for PC.NFL 2K3 is good too.Sega, w00t!

Details sound solid. But I'm only gonna be going online with one console for the time being.(A little obvious since I only own one). But ummm...Good Luck M$

Going online with Sony and reading the Xbox Live plans have made me kind of jealous. :( Oh well. I think that XBL will do great in the fall of 2002, and even better in 2003. And 1 in 10 signed up people get on the beta testings? That seems kind of small to me. Oh well, makes the people who got picked at big more special I guess! :D

They make this sound so revolutionary and new. By the time its out it will be the last console online. Anyway, I think PSO can = 6 games on my list. Its just...the best online game evar!!!111

It's usually worse than that.

I do not think that you and gekko realize that PSO isn't the game for everybody. No game is (except Ratchet and Clank ;) :D ). There is more variety, hell loads more variety with going online with the PS2 or Xbox. And I really do not see that changing until maybe early 2004.

I think that would be Everquest for an online game.

I second that. Maybe he is talking consoles.... And since DC has been the only online console so far, it will obviously hold the record.

Xbox is also online. 64DD never came out in America though, so not really very fair.

Well Xbox is only being played online through the cheap tunnel services and with beta testing. GC is online with the PSO trial.

I mean, are any of these really fair? Of course not. But it's not my fault Sega is smart :)

Was Genesis online with that XBAND thing-a-majigger? I remember reading that in Nintendo Power.

Genesis had that online weird thing, but I think it flopped.

GameGear was going to go online too or whatever... I think.

Ya. Some cartridge thing where you connected your cable line to it, and paid a monthly fee. Don't remember the specifics, but I remember you could download games.

Not positive that you could play online. But connecting to a service via cable sounds a lot like cable internet, so I'm gonna say yes :)

So you're saying PSO comes out October 31st...I didn't even know that Sega had a US release date for it yet.

They've had a date for a while. It was pushed back to 10/31.

And all this time I thought it would be released early next year...(well I knew they said fall 2002, but I had my doubts)....

Genesis had Sega Channel were you downloaded games to the system, but I'm not sure if you count that as online or not. Sega Saturn online was too. Duke Nukem, Daytona, and Virtua ON supported it.

I read in OXM that Sega was packaging PSO with the LIVE package in Japan.
