Anyone get this? I played a little, then died. I kinda ran into a house and got shot up. Had no clue what exactly they wanted me to do, not used to giving orders and what not. Anyway, I gotta play it again soon.
Anyone else got it?

I do not have a demo... And I think that it will be easier to give commands when you have a headset. ;)

I don't know where exactly to get it. Heard some people got it in the mail, others got it from their local game store, others got it from eBay. Me? I went into Best Buy, bought their preorder pack for $5, and the demo was included, along with coupons.
It's Best Buy's preorder deal. If you actually want to get it there, it's $5 off the game price when you pick it up. But me, I already got it ordered. I just paid $5 cause I wanted the demo. You can go do the same, just check around the PS2 stuff for a SOCOM box.
Anyway, I just got a little farther, about 30% through, rushing, and then I got killed. Fun game, but I have a few worries:
1) Online team-based games rarely ever get played properly, with the teams working together. I do not want to play with some fool who is going to rush through the game, going on a shooting spree and getting himself killed. I actually want to play with people who are good at the game, and work as a unit to win.
2) This game needs to have good documentation, cause playing the demo leaves a lot to be learned. As I was walking through they told me to order Bravo team to run to Zulu. So I did, but why? And where is Zulu? I should be using my own brain to determine which orders to give, but I have no clue where these positions are, and no way to really know why I would want to send them there.
I'll give more details when I play more. Overall the game has yet to disapoint, but it's gonna take some time to learn the game. Hopefully I'll master the demo by the time the full version comes out. Quicker I become good means the quicker I can play online.

Which is exactly why clan vs. clan matches are 50 times better to be in.

Then why don't we just start one. I'll let you be in mine, if you are good enough.
;)

Aye, but I don't know if I'll stick to the GT alliance thingie. I'm cool with it, but if it's anything like GTRAC (no activity), I'll leave.
I was just browsing the IGN boards. Seems like it's a 49/49 split between the people who want to run and shoot at everything, and the ones who want to snipe. The other 2% are the smart people.
Anyway Stu, you're reconstructing the PS2 forum or whatever you called it. Time to start with SOCOM clan stuff. We need a name.

what about "OVERandOUT'
or simple old
'GameTavernSquad'
I like the first one better, although I'm not good with this kinda thing...

I was thinking something more military-oriented. It woulkd fit the game a lot better.

Ok, some impressions.
Controls
Controls are actually fairly good. And considering all console FPS should be burned and ported to PC, that's good. Controls are setup as follows:
D-Pad Up/Down: Cycles between views. From down to up: 3rd person, 1st person, zoom (scope/binoculars)
D-Pad Left/Right: Lean to the side
Left Stick: Walk, strafe
Right Stick: Turn, aim
L3: Change rate of fire (single shot, burst, automatic)
R3: Reload
X: Appears to be action button
O: Talk/give command
Triangle: Cycle through positions (standing, crouch, prone)
Square: Jump? I have jumped, not exactly sure how anymore
R1: Fire
R2: Change weapon (list pops up)
L1: Not sure
L2: Seems to switch to my handgun
Now my complaints. L2 seems to autoswitch to my handgun. Why do I want that? I am hoping it's possible to determine which gun you can switch to. I would much rather have it switch to a grenade quick, or something like that. It's a demo, not everything is available.
Aiming is kinda hard. Even when zoomed in through a scope, it's fairly difficult to line up your shot quickly, and accuratly. They said the game won't allow keyboard/mouse for controlling your player, and I can see why. Aiming on PS2 is a real handicap. Out of the zoom, it has like an auto-aim feature. Beats me how it works. It sure doesn't snap to position like goldeneye. I think you may just be able to shoot close to them, and his them. In a scope view, you need a dead on shot for sure.
Graphics
It's a PS2 game, can't expect much ;) But really, the game looks nice. No complaints from me. Although I am running it through S-Video, and I did notice that it had an option for 480p progressive scan. To my knowledge, Ps2 doesn't even support progressive scan, or maybe it doesn't have a progressive scan chip and needs to put it directly on disc. I don't know. All I know is I'm gonna run out, grab some PS2 component cables, and hook this bad boy up for some better graphics. Only reason I use S-Video now is cause I switch between 2 component video slots, with Xbox, DVD, and Gamecube. Adding another would be torture, but for SOCOM, I'll do it.
Gameplay
Wordalicious! Actually, this game kicks major ass. But it's playing too much like a FPS right now. It's a demo, you're not even supposed to have a clue what you're doing. But I wouldn't even give SOCOM a second look if it was just a FPS. I wanna get into the tactics part of the game. I want the enemies to sneak up behind me cause I was being stupid and left footprints visible. I wanna sneak around in long grass. But can you imagine walking into a store, playing a demo from a game you've never played, and not be able to win without a lot of patience, and strategy, and stealth? I think this would make a far better demo, but all it does is leaves me wanting more.
Reloading, I must give them credit. You may have noticed there is a reload button, but they made it good! You get 3 magazines. If you're down to 7 bullets in one, hit reload and you switch to another. Get down to 15, hit reload and you're on your last one. Get down to 3 bullets on that one, hit reload, and you're back to you're magazine with 7. You don't just magically fill up the remainder on the magazine like in most FPS.
Also, you get primary and secondary objectives. You don't need to do any secondary objectives to complete the mission. So I'm wondering what will really become of it in the final game. In the demo, I am able to avoid like 5 buildings by not doing the secondary objectives. Interesting.
Anyway, I don't want to comment too much on the gameplay. This game isn't final, it's mostly pick-up-and-play. I have figured out where the locations are to order my men, but I still have seem no real reason why I want to put them there. Strategy has really played no part in this demo so far. It plays just like a counter-terrorism FPS would. But that's not what makes SOCOM special. If the final version was like the demo, I would pass it up for Counter-Strike. But I know that strategy is a big part of the game, and I understand that it wouldn't make for a good demo. So all I can do is try to master my SOCOM skills, and wait for the final version.

This game sounds awesome. I'd love to join your little alliance thing although I won't be getting this game until spring...when I finally have a job.

The only thing is, if it is GT-only, we might have to let some crappy people in.... lol.
However, I'll be up to anything if we start a clan. Make a sub-forum, Stu! This won't be the last time I ask you. ;)
And SOCOM sounds great from the impressions on the demo. I can't wait to pick up this game. Thanks for the hands on, gekko.

Good question. I am guessing DVD. This is because the game includes single player offline, and all of the multiplayer online stuff.

Ok, more on the demo.
I just finished it. Please, hold your applause. More info.
L1 switches to primary weapon
L2 switches to secondary weapon
I got a change to mess around with the equipment menu. Very cool. They rate each weapon based on volume, accuracy, range, and rate of fire. I decided to switch to a silenced sniper rifle, and since visibility is limited in the demo, use it to my advantage to take out the gaurds early on in the level, then go and complete my objectives. Look like it worked.
I completed it with 70%. Not sure what all is involved for 100%. I missed 1 secondary objective, and I've heard there is a secret objective. I also had a man die, if that makes a difference.
This game ownz. If you live near Best Buy, seriously, go pick this up for $5.

Will SOCOM include a progressive-scan mode?
It sure will. and it'll be only the second PS2 game to do so - the first being Tekken 4. For those of you that don't know, the game having a progressive-scan option means that it's compatible with high-definition displays.
No wonder I didn't think PS2 supported it. Well I guess I'll need to go pick up some component cables. At least I got a $5 off coupon for Best Buy.

Yeah... There is a Best Buy opening up in Missisauga... The newspapers have been advertising it like crazy... I would apply for a job there, but it is too far away.
