Reg. DSL runs through a phone line. Cable runs through *gasp* Cable! But I think speeds are diff. too. Cable has better speeds. if you don't count the newer DSL lines.

I think IGN said that DSL is better when it comes to downloading, but cable is faster when uploading.
I really don't know a lot about the subject, but I think cable speeds vary on the amount of users, etc.
Someone else will explain it better. :D
its not really a phone line DSL runs tho. its a big Fat wire.
phone lines can be run tho this wire with your DSL. but a normal phone line will not support dsl.
Theres 2 types of dsl. (not counting the newer stuff) main 2 right now or aDSL and sDSL.
dunno which is witch i get them confused. hell i dont even remember which it is i have.
one of them is more like cable. speeds fluctuate some days you might get faster then other days.
normally. moneywise. Cable is faster for what you pay for. DSL can easily get up to the speeds cable gets. but you pay a little more.
cable ovbiously runs tho cable.
Cable is faster uploading usually. and downloading usually too. (altho like i said. pay a bit more and DSL will do the same.)
For games. from what i've seen playin online over the years.
DSL will get you a lower ping. on average. i mean One of my teammates in quake. downloads with his Cable over 300k/sec.
gets a 70ping on this server.
I with dsl. download at a crappy 80-100 k/sec
However i get a 30 ping. Go figure. And this is from basically the same distance.
of course a lot of things factor in. but everyone says when they switch to one or the other. higher pings with cable but faster download.
I dunno all the technical mumbo jumbo. i just speaking from experience. Game wise. pings are a little more stable with dsl. It really depends on what you need the connection to do for you.

Yes, cable speeds vary on the amount of users in your area. Its all like a network. more users clogging it up in your area. your speed goes down.
one of the 2 DSL's i mentioned is the same.
the one i got Its a set speed. and the ISP garentee's me that speed everytime. (altho it does flucuate, just not as much as cable)

Cable is easier to use. With DSL you need a DSL subscription, and an ISP. With cable you only have 1. Make much more sense logically.
Anyway, with cable, I'm gotten over 2Mbps connection. In fact, I once downloaded a file at 3Mbps. But once more people join and people are on, I get down to 500kbps, even 300kbps at peak hours.
With DSL, you'd go broke if you ever wanted a 2Mbps connection. With DSL if you get a 768Kbps plan, your speeds will vary a little, but you'll always be above 768Kbps. With Cable, I have a 1.5Mbps connection, and while I can get over that, I'm usually well under it.
If you're serious about broadband, get an expensive DSL package, cause you can garauntee faster speeds. You also pay more for those faster speeds. But hey, I wouldn't mind paying $80+ monthly for some sweet speed.
Anyway, for the average user, it won't make a difference either way.

Nope.
DSL orders just the same as Cable.
Call up ISP. set it up. and thats all you subscribe to.

Then it's changed. With DSL, you still need an ISP. The logical thing to do is just make the DSL subscription and ISP all in the same package, but people weren't thinking.
When DSL first arrived, it was get an ISP, then go through someone else to get the DSL.
Yes, because the people who setup the DSL. was differnt from the people you ordered it from.
Now the ISPs own the company that provides the dsl.
so you only subscribe to the ISP and they handle the rest. they merged it into 1
