Super Mario Sunshine has been selling superbly in Japan. The latest effort from Studio Shigeru has reportedly sold out in under two hours. Huge queues formed around the block in downtown Akiharbara, which isn't a surprise considering the game has topped Famitsu's most wanted chart for what seems like an eternity.
We'll have to wait for more definite sales figures before a fair judgement can be made, but rest assured that it will be a decent financial success for the Big N. The game is crucial for the Gamecube's outlook in Japan and should entice more potential GC owners to part with their cash.
The Mario series has been a rip-roaring success for Nintendo, and the portly plumber is now the most recognised computer game character in the world (according to recent surveys). Super Mario Sunshine by all accounts does the series justice, by refining what makes the games so special with touches of pure innovation.

Yeah, I doubt that will happen here, but I do think it will sell faster and more then any current cube game.

That is because there hasn't really been too many great games on GCN, IMO.

Well, not to be evil or anything but who's to say that many copies of the games were shipped?
For all we know, Nintendo shipped 10 games and it took 2 hours for it to sell out. (Ok that is stretching it but you get the point)

I think at least 600,000 were shipped, could be even close if not a million.

There was a rumour that atleast 500,000 - 600,000 copies were shipped, and atleast 100,000 GC's were sold...
Then again, I'd rather wait to read something a bit more official :D.

The market research firm Media Create has announced that Nintendo has sold 400.000 copies of Super Mario Sunshine so far in Japan. That is good news! Chances are big that the game will be sold in big numbers than Nintendo's mega hit Super Smash Bros Melee, which sold over a million copies in Japan.
Also, Mario is still on the no1 spot in the daily Japanese software charts. Check 'm out:
Charts 22-07-2002:
1. Super Mario Sunshine (Nintendo) Gamecube
2. Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu 9 (Konami) PlayStation2
3. Kamaitachi no Yoru 2 (Chunsoft) PlayStation2
4. My Summer 2: Chapter of Sea Adventure (Sony) PlayStation2
5. Saru! Get You! 2 (Sony) PlayStation2
6. Jissen Pachi-Slot Hisshouhou! Aladdin A (Sammy) PlayStation2
7. Genso Suikoden III (Konami) PlayStation2
8. Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu 9 (Konami) Gamecube
9. Hikaru no Go 2 (Konami) Game Boy Advance
10. Crash Bandicoot Advance (Konami) Game Boy Advance
Heh, not too bad. I figured Nintendo would've shipped more:unsure: But 400,000 is great.

I would have thought nintendo would ship more at release, But I suppose they wanted a steady flow of ship dates...

I'm not really interested in how well the game has been selling in Japan, but more interested in when the game is actually released here in the states! :D
Mario Sunshine should HAVE been a launch title for the Cube.

Thats what most people wanted. But if you think about it. Would you want a Mario that hasnt been polished to the point that you know it can only come from Nintendo and not any other company, ie: A rushed game. Or a game that you have to wait longer, but it turns out better than 98% of everything on the market. ie: Eternal Darkness. I would rather wait and have a great experience. Plus, I dont think Nintendo wants to **** Mario up. They would be banished if Mario turned out horrible.

Heh, Nintendo would be "banished" if Mario was only a "good" game and not a "great" game.

Luigi's Mansion was basically an example of why you shouldn't rush Nintendo to release a game. See what happens. It turns out good. Not great.

Luigi's Mansion was polished, and it wasn't rushed.
And 400,000 is a lot. Mario has outsold Xbox :)

Id like to see a real fat plumber beat an xbox with a sledge hammer, or just jump on it.

Umm... NOPE! If SMS was a launch title, it would not have been rushed. Why? Because they would have put Luigi's Mansion on the backburner, and focus all attention to SMS. So, the final SMS now would be the same as if it were a launch title.
