And here we go with the 4th preview for the day....

Mario has been through it all. He has starred in tennis games, golfs games, party games and RPGs. Mario has been a referee, a Tetris master, a docter and a fighter. Let the italian plumber has always been known for his adventure/platformer games. They have always set the standard for others to follow.

Most will agrue that Mario's greatest adventure was either in Super Mario Bros 3 or Super Mario World. Nintendo has seen fit to release both games on the GameBoy Advance. The first being a port of the Super Nintendo game Super Mario World. The title will be released under the name Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World.

most gamers will remember SMW as the game that introduced Mario's dinosaur pet Yoshi for the first time. As the story goes, Mario locates Yoshi in an egg and is asked to aid him in his search for his friends who have been kidnapped by the Koopa Kids. Mario, who was already in search of King Bowser Koopa for Princess Toadstool, agrees to aid this dino, and there adventure to find Yoshi's friends and Princess ToadStool begin.

The game was the first to feature a linking overworld map. the concept was first seen in Super Mario Bros 3 but was limited to the region in which you were. Super Mario World was the first to use a world map that was connected which meant that you could travel to worlds already conquered. This will aid Mario and gamers as there were many secrets hidden throughout the game. There are a total of 91 exits to the levels plus 2 hidden worlds including the Star Road.

The game will sport some improvements over it's SNES counterpart. Such as the ability to switch between Mario and his younger brother Luigi at anytime. The ability to save all the lives you have racked up and some visual touch ups. The soundtrack has remained unchanged but are a bit more bland to compsenate for the GBA ability.

The game featured some first for the Mario series. Such as the ability for Mario to fly with a cape. While airborn , Mario also gained new abilites such as the talent to float with his cape or to come crashing down on his oppenents with a belly flop. Not only could Mario take to the sky but his new pet pal could also. With the aid of magic wings, a blue turtle or a blue Yoshi eating a turtle the dino was able to take flight. The Yoshi that ate the turtle had limited flight abilites until they swallowed the Turtles, and the one with the wings had unlimited use for that level, until the end of the flying section or when hit by an enemy.

Mario trademark powerups were also present such as his fire flower and invicble star power. The game also allowed Mario to store one power up to either trade off or receive when hit. The GBA version has pretty much made this feature useless as unike the SNES version when hit Mario doesn't go from powered up Mario to regualr Mario but instead hits the middle and ends up in the Super Mario state.

The Yoshi also had power ups and colored Yoshis with special abilites. If Yoshi swallowed a green turtle he was able to shoot out a turtle shell, a red turtle shot fireballs, a blue gave Yoshi flight and a yellow gave Yoshi the ability to cause mini-quakes. Each turtle shell also had a Yoshi to match, and any turtle shell would yield that color's power like a yellow Yoshi who eats a shell would be able to cause a mini quake no matter the color.

Nintendo has also added the multiplayer mode seen in Super Mario Adance so it's nothing really new if you played the original.

All in all Super Mario Advance 2 seems to be a great port of an already great game. It's due in Feb 2k2 for the USA.

Excellent post BaB. You just increased my levels of want for this game. I can't wait till it comes out here in Europe! SMW IS one of the BEST game I have ever played, and playing a better version can only mean good, and it's portable too!

Well even more news on the game from the EGM review....

Luigi now plays different from his brother. He has a longer and higher jump and his fireballs bounce higher.

There is actually a total of 96 exits and not the 91 stated before.

Yoshi coins are till hidden throughout the levels but if you get all 5 they turn to Princess coins.

If you are able to get all 96 exits there are nre opening and cutscenes.

You now need to beat the game once to re-enter any castle or tower. In the original you just went over the board and pressed R and L together.

I stated this before but I'll say it again you can switch between Mario and Luigi by pressing R on the map.
