We reported a while ago that Nintendo was releasing a new Memory Card with Super Mario Sunshine in Japan, on the 19th of July.

Today, we've learned that Nintendo has plans to release another memory storage device, the Memory Card 64Mb in August. The 64Mb contains nearly four times the information of the Memory Card 251, which in turn holds more than four times the regular Memory Card 51. 1,019 blocks of memory are available on the Memory Card 64Mb. The access times are up to 50% shorter than with the Memory Card 59.

It's about time.

Are they talking when loading(when already in a game) or when you go to the 'Cube menu? But this is more than great news for me! I think Nintendo might be backing off SD for now if they are releasing a 64 meg mem. card of their own.

With the 251 being released really soon it wouldn't do well in sales with this new card coming out. Wouldn't be a smart move for Nintendo. *shrug* Who knows.

Er... No, you're getting mixed up with something else. It was bought up during IGN's review for Interact's mem. card.

Well, it's about time. Nintendo should have had an 8mb memory card when the system launched.

Wow man how totaly wrong you are.
The GameCube can read only 128 files at once but it can read infinite numbers of blocks.
Any one files is each a separate save. So while EA games take 30+ blocks of memory it's still only 1 file out of the 128. Acclaims Baseball takes 300 blocks and it's still 1 file

So basically it means that you can save up to 128 games, or less games and then some of the snap shots in SSB: Melee (which are each 1 file), or a few separate races in ExtremeG3 (each 1 file)

So Biohazard, please inform yourself next time you give out Facts in order not to be put down the correction lane.

I was wondering that as well. Is it a wise move to announce the bigger Memory Card before the old one is even released. (Ok so it came out yesterday) So I guess I will end up buying one 251 to hold me over.

Hmm

*Thinks about it*

Maybe that was Nintendo games

Force people to buy the 59 at launch and therefore after then get their hopes up and force them to buy the 251 then release a bigger card.

*Wonders if Justin's memory card consiparcy was correct*

Well, they haven't announced a price yet. So I guess some people might buy the 251 since it will be cheaper th en the 64 meg one.

A third memory card from Nintendo, eh?

Yet another reason for me to believe that the SD card adapter will never be released :p

Anyways... cool... I guess...

BTW, Jason.. just because you're not having problems now, doesn't mean you won't in the future... doesn't mean you will, but still... it's not like third party things have problems right from the start...

I called it:

http://www.gametavern.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1917&highlight=Memory+Card

3) Gamecube's memory cards. Instead of releasing a "full" 8MB card, they release a 4mb card that can't handle ports. Why? Cause it costs them a handful or quarters to make, and they can sell it for $15 (which is a HUGE rip off). Why wait til this year to release the 251? So games can have memory that exceed 59 blocks, and people will have to go out and buy another rip off card at a rip off price. In 2003 they could do the same thing (it's not like most sports games on Xbox/Ps2 can fit on a 251 block card anyway).

When is this 8MB card being released anyway?

how much you guys wanna bet there are games that will exceed 251blocks and force peeps to buy 8MB cards?

Supposed to be August in Japan. And there shouldn't be many games that exceed 251 blocks. That is 2MB worth of information. Exceeding 2MB with one game is rediculas.

Well of course there are sports games... and then I dunno what the NGC version will be like, but in my Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance game on PS2, I had like 4 characters saved or something, and it took up like 1.3 MB... That's not 2MB, but that's quite a lot for one game :D

If I remember seeing right one time at Blockbuster, I saw on the back of the first WWF(E) game for PS2 it said Mem. Card - 8 Meg.

But like... even Madden for PS2 doesn't take up 2MB. And that saves every single stat possible on every single player. Even with a game like that, the only reason I could see it taking more than 2MB is if you wanted to play multiple seasons/franchises and whatnot. But that's not a single save forcing you to buy a bigger card.

The 251 rules though. I had 4 filled (or within a couple blocks) and they all fit on a 251 nicely, and I still have 44 blocks open.

Yeah I know most games won't take up a whole memory card, but still, if game save files do end up getting bigger as different kinds of games come out and such, even if a game save takes up like... half a MB... or 1 MB... it means you'd only be able to fit like 2-4 saves on each one... which still isn't very much...

I mean most game saves won't take up that much, but still... :p

Really I think a 2MB cards might be enough for most people, at least when you look at how much space most NGC games take up now... but who knows... sports fans and such will still be upset, probably...

and BTW, I could have sworn that my franchise in madden took up like... 2500KB or something  I dunno, that was awhile back... I can't remember for sure... maybe it was 1500KB

Umm... no it doesn't... Madden for Ps2's franchise mode is around 2,500kb... NCAA's franchise mode is 4,500kb...

That two games I know I'm going to buy (maybe not on Cube, but eh) that exceed 251 blocks.

NBA Live is over 2,000 also, hell, almost every EA Sport game with Create-a-player and a franchise mode uses more than 2,000 blocks.

Sega Sports don't that that much because they use short cuts like excluding created players from franchise mode, and not having generated rookies or the ability to import rookies. (it's all saved on the disk)

I prefer the EA way... but anyways, back on topic, some games will exceed 251.
