MARIO'S UNIVERSE IS "NOT NINTENDO GAME"
Amazing. Some people definitely have too much time on their hands. A new 2D Mario game for GameCube or GBA? Don't hold your breath...
15:52 Denied. Nintendo Japan has just confirmed that a highly convincing movie [see story]doing the rounds of a game calling itself Super Mario's Universe "is not footage of a Nintendo game". That, young friends of ours, is a very good fake indeed.
The movie appeared on American sites yesterday, showing a Game Boy Advance loading sequence; a cel-shaded intro sequence involving what appeared to be Princess Peach, Bowser and Mario; and a short piece with what looked to be Mario running along in two dimensions then leaping into a Paper Mario-esque pipe. Speculation ran rife that the title was a new GameCube platformer in the illustrious series.
Suspicions were immediately raised. The Game Boy Advance sequence at the beginning of the movie span towards the camera as a finale, unlike the actual GBA logo which fades out. Also, the name of the title contained an apostrophe, unlike any other game in the Mario series. Wonder no longer, kiddiewinks. Nintendo just put a stop to all speculation.
"We know such images are available on the 'Net," said a spokesperson for Nintendo Japan. "They are not Nintendo's. At this point in time it appears that some amateur has made this up just for their amusement."
"If we hear any more we'll let you know, but that's pretty much it," added a Nintendo Europe spokesperson.
All we can say is, whoever made that movie has way, way too much time on their hands and needs employing by a games company right now, if they're not already. The movie caused intense speculation yesterday among the Web community due to the incredible level of detail in the footage and lovely touches such as inertia in the backgrounds and fluid, elastic animation on 'Mario' himself.
You're out there and you know who you are. Our hats come off: that has to be the fake to end them all.
