With XP the desktop items have a transparency so that the words go onto the background and not a solid color like in previous Windows. Somehow that solid color showed up. Not only that the textures for the 3D text screensaver won't work (both things happened at same time). I know these are little things and can probably be easily fixed...but I just don't know how...help...

Go to "System Properties" in the control panel. Click the "Advanced"tab. Click the "Settings" button under "Performance." Scroll to the bottom, check the "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" button.

Well a few things to try. Under desktop settings, switch it to Windows Classic and back, which should reset the default Windows XP settings, and see if that helps.
Otherwise, is the "Let Windows Decide The Best For Me" thing selected in the performance settings?

Tried all that. One time it said something about my active desktop not working. Where are the settings for active desktop?

you could go to control panel, appearance and themes, change theme, and change it from current xp theme(modified) to xp theme. that will prob put all the settings back on default. it might fix your problem. you'd have to change you icons and background back to the way you like em though cause it puts it back to their original. doesn't take long to do though. might work, i dunno...
