View Full Version : So who's getting the Wii U?

I'll probably get it, but I don't see any game I really want. Nintendo Land and Mario will be fun, but not something you buy a new console for...
I will probably buy it just because I know I'll get it within the first year. I don't expect the price to drop (much), so I might as well get it right away and enjoy it. Oh, I hope it will launch with some good eShop titles (that sequel to World of Goo perhaps?).
How about you? What games are you getting with it?
I just told my friend he can have my pre-order. My TV burned all of the HDMIs (for the second time) and the car needs a new transmission. I'll get a new TV since I bet this one will just get the HDMIs burned a third time and I'ld rather get a new one with 3D. I'm thinking I'll buy mine around May when I no longer have anything to pay.

As soon as Nintendo decides to release a game I want, I will buy. Until then, very doubtful I will purchase.
I am thinking of jumping on the 3DS bandwagon soon though.

I'm still 3DS-less. I'll probably get it one day and enjoy the Mario games. Oh and the next Zelda of course.
I'm looking forward to a lot of the other stuff Wii U can do, like TVii, Youtube and play VC games.

Pre-ordered Wii U. Impressed by what I've played at events, and Nintendo TVii seals the deal.
Getting Madden, Assassin's Creed, Ninja Gaiden 3, Black Ops 2, and Zombi U on the 18th.

I hope it has Youtube out of the box. I think I heard we'll have to wait a while for TVii, grrrrr.
I have Youtube on my Smart TV and on my media streamer, but they both suck. It doesn't have the functions that the browser-based Youtube has, I can't find some videos and the UI is a mess.
So I hope Wii U will solve that for me.

Today I finally made a reservation for a Wii U! The store is getting 500 units and I'm the first to make a reservation.
A month ago or so I already made a reservation at Bartsmit.com, but it was more of a "we'll notify you when we get them" thing. Also the price on that site wasn't too good.
For weeks I kept walking into the BCC to ask if they were going to sell Wii U... Now this morning they finally had confirmation. They're getting 500 units and I am the first with a reservation.
The nice thing about this store is that they have a lowest price guarantee and that the store is pretty close to my home.
Hope you get a good launch system Angrist! Kinda jealous actually.
The one thing that bugs me: IGN has said that there's so far no way to turn off the gamepad's screen if you don't want to be using it. I think that would be a great option since battery life is supposed to kind of blow.

Why the second thoughts?
And so far Nintendo acts like they're really constantly working on improving the OS. I bet the option to turn off the screen will come eventually. It could even be an in-game option.

I just never got around to doing it.
Forgive my lack of motivation to research; this WiiU console, what will be the launch price in Canada/US?

In US it's $300 for the regular one and $350 for the deluxe, which includes some extra things like a bigger hard drive, a charging dock for the tablet, and some kind of membership to an online program which will get you free stuff.
I can't remember if Nintendo Land comes with both versions or not.

I just read the EG reviews of Nintendo Land and NSMBU. Pretty much what I expected, although Mario sounds better than I had dared to hope.
I'm picking up Nintendo Land because I'll probably learn to like it (especially with guests). I can't say I'm too excited about it.
Oh by the way!! I keep forgetting about all the eShop games we're getting at launch! I hope Little Inferno (by the World of Goo guys) will be good, I want to pick that up. I'm also thinking about Nano Assault and maaaaaaybe Trine 2.

I was going over the launch lineup and it really amazed me. 23 retail games and 7 or 8 eShop ones. And it's not all lazy ports and easy tie-ins.
Sure, there's the group of late ports (ME3, Batman, Ninja Gaiden 3, Darksiders 2, Just Dance 4). I'm not sure if we should put Tekken TT2 in that group, with all the huge changes they made to the Wii U version.
Then there's the list of games that were launched in the last month or so. AC3, Black Ops 2, Sonic Racing Transformed, Epic Mickey 2, Skylanders Giants, FIFA 2013 (really big in Europe). Having that kind of support at launch is very impressive.
And finally you have a bunch of exclusives. I have to say none of the games have really amazed me so far.
- Nintendo Land is supposed to be fun but I don't see it yet.
- Mario sounds/looks really good, but it's 'just' a 2D platformer.
- ZombiU... we haven't seen any reviews yet. This one better be good.
- SiNG Party could be a good sing/dance game, we'll have to wait and see.
- Rabbids Land could be a decent mini-game collection, but will it sell?
- Scribblenauts Unlimited... should have been a downloadable title imo. Could be fun though.
I'm also interested in several eShop titles:
- Little Inferno: how could the sequel to World of Goo be bad?
- Nano Assault Neo is hopefully a fun twin stick shooter. It sure looks pretty.
- Trine 2: Director's Cut is an improvement on an already good game.
Several other ones could be good, but we haven't seen any (p)reviews yet.
So all in all it's probably one of the best launch line-ups. Except it doesn't have a killer app, a must-have. No Wii Sports, no Mario 64, no Super Mario World.
imo it looks like a shitty launch lineup but maybe my gaming tastes are too far removed. I put it in context of the 300 dollars up front and then more for extra gamepads and the usual. And you know ninny is going to release some sort of hardware date approximately 15 months from now.
I think I`m gonna wait until price drop and a better idea of what kind of software support this thing is going to garner.

Argh why does it take so long before American launch impressions are in? I heard there were hardly any midnight launches, that partly explains it.
I've seen two IGN reviews of 'ported' games. They're pretty much the same games with some bonus features thrown in. Nothing revolutionary, but still good games.

Eurogamer gave a 9/10. They don't give .5s by the way.
The biggest complaints the game gets is that it's not an action FPS. It's a slow horror survival. If you play it like that, it's apparently really good.
So did you hear about the day 1 update problems? Apparently if your console is turned off during the proces, you brick it. I'm sure Nintendo is working on a fix right now (and I won't have to be afraid of it at the EU launch).

So, I had a large impressions post typed out Thursday, but I was alt tabbing back and forth between a game of Civ V and accidentally closed it without posting...so here we go again.
I purchased the deluxe package of the Wii U for $350, which included the system, a sensor bar, a charging dock for the gamepad, a stand for the gamepad, a gamepad, Nintendo Land, and a 32 gig hard drive. This is $50 more than the regular package which only has an $8 gig hard drive, no Nintendo Land and no charging dock. Since Nintendo Land is $60 on its own, I think it's definitely worth it to go for the deluxe.
In addition to Nintendo Land I picked up the New Super Mario Bros (NSMB) game.
I'll start with the hardware itself:
The Wii U system is about as wide as the regular Wii, maybe even more narrow, but it's much longer. It should fit into any entertainment system without problems though. You can also stand it vertically, and it includes a couple of stands for doing that if you want.
It features a similar disc insert method to the Wii (you slide the disk in the front, it doesn't have a tray), which I like since it seems like it provides fewer points of failure.
The system and the gamepad are glossy black in the deluxe version. I'm not sure what Nintendo's fascination with glossyness is (the regular 3DS is also glossy), but it's impossible to keep clean. The back of the gamepad is a matte textured plastic, like a 360 controller. Would have much preferred the system and the entire gamepad to be like that.
The system supports 1080p resolution, and unlike most other devices does actually come with an HDMI cable, which I appreciated.
The gamepad is surprisingly light, but doesn't feel cheap. It has two analog sticks, four face buttons (A, B, X, Y) plus a "+" and "-" button (basically select and start). It also has a power button which, once you've synced it to the Wii, powers the system and gamepad off and on. It also had a home button for returning to the main menu. There are also two shoulder buttons and two shoulder triggers.
The screen is very similar to the 3DS touch screen, except larger and a better resolution. It is single touch, and not capacitive, so pressure matters. It comes with a stylus.
There's some grumbling out there about how it would be so much better if it was an iPad quality screen. Perhaps - but it would also be loads more expensive and people are already saying that $300 is very expensive. There's also some comfort in the fact that it functions exactly like the DS/3DS screen, so it's something familiar that people are used to playing "console" games on. The simplicity also means, to me, that games aren't going to get too extravagant in how they utilize that screen. I'm probably not going to have to use complicated gestures to make Mario spin in the next 3D Mario title. If the tech isn't there, Nintendo won't have to try to find an excuse to use it like they did with motion controls.
It was a little odd at first, playing with my hands so far apart, but I got over that quickly.
The Wii U OS software is pretty nice. It's very reminiscent of the DS software, which uses tiles to hold apps that you can click on. A weird thing at first that took some getting used to is that the gemepad is king in terms of operating the OS. The TV is secondary. The main menu has options on the gamepad to open things like the game disc, the e shop, settings, etc.
The TV, as far as I can tell, shows a random assortment of stuff. It shows Mii's from the Miiverse with top rated drawings and messages, in addition to icons for random apps and software. If you want to be able to interact with that stuff, there's a button to switch what's on the TV and what's on the gamepad, because it has to be on the gamepad for you to click it.
It's not a bad system, just different and confusing at first since I kept trying to select stuff on the TV screen using the analog sticks.
On to the games...
Nintendo Land is the Wii Sports of the Wii U. It's a collection of minigames, some multiplayer and some single player, that all utilize the gamepad in some unique way. Basically tech demos, but they are some really good and really fun tech demos.
One thing I found impressive was how everything between the gamepad and the TV is one to one. Whether you're drawing with the stylus, using the gyro sensor to steer a car, or using the screen as a viewfinder.
An odd thing about Nintendo Land, though, is that the games with the highest production values (Zelda, Metroid), are probably the most boring games, and the simpler games are the most addictive. Zelda is basically a rail shooter where the person with the game pad uses a bow (the screen serves as a view finder to target), and everyone else uses the wii mote as swords. It's fun, but not compelling enough to go back to very often.
However, Yoshi's fruit cart (one of the single player offerings) is super fun. You have two maps, one on TV and one on the gamepad, and you use a stylus to draw the path the cart will take. The challenge is that you can see the fruit you want to pick up on the TV and not on the gamepad, so you need to try to draw a path through something you can't see.
The Animal Crossing game is also fun. The person with the gamepad uses the analog sticks to control two characters and chase everyone else, who is trying to collect candy. The other people use the TV, while the gamepad person can only see a small portion of the map on the gamepad. The other people are also faster, so you have to be clever about trapping people using your numbers advantage.
New Super Mario Bros is everything I hoped it would be. It's an HD, 2D, Mario game. It's also one of the most difficult ones I've played in a long time.
The game looks so nice. It's not pushing the envelope on textures, everything is so smooth, bright, crisp, and shiny. Even if the game weren't fun, it would have me ecstatic about all the possibilities of playing Nintendo games in HD. But the game is fun - probably the best "new" super mario bros game yet.
In addition to the difficulty, it also has tons of secret areas in each level to explore and find, and the "world map" is one big continuous experience - it's not divided into zones.
It has the same multiplayer as the other NSMB games, which I don't care for at all. I know some people enjoy it, but I just find it frustrating. It makes the game more difficult having more people, without much benefit in return.
The Miiverse is very nicely integrated into NSMB. Whenever you do really good on a level, it gives you an option to post about it. If you keep failing at a particular spot, it lets you post about it. If you happen to die similarly to someone else, it shows you their words of encouragement.
The gamepad is only really used as a second screen in NSMB (everything on TV is duplicated on the gamepad). I've heard some grumbling online about this, usually in the form of "nintendo doesn't know what to do with their own hardware" - but I think that Nintendo Land by itself proves that wrong.
It's actually refreshing to me that Nintendo didn't feel the need to cram some weird feature into the game using that screen that would have made this Mario game not-Mario. Instead, it sends a clear message to gamers and other developers that the Wii U is also a system for traditional style games which leverage the Gamepad as a mobile second screen instead of a core gameplay mechanic.
Conclusion
I'm extremely happy with my Wii U. If a new game comes out for all three current consoles, I'll probably pick up the Wii U version because the ability to play on the gamepad and not take up the TV if you want to is so awesome. Two people can be on the couch doing two different things at once. It's actually kind of revolutionary, and I think this is going to be an especially nice feature for families with kids.
To be honest, though, even if I had bought the Wii U and not enjoyed the gamepad, I think the system is worth the $350 because you're going to finally be playing first party Nintendo games in HD.

I will agree that Wii U will EVENTUALLY be worth the $350 price, but the games out there right now dont do anything for me, at least not the exclusives. Once Nintendo starts churning out their always exceptional 1st party titles I will have to pick one up. And no, New super mario Bros Wii, while looks to be a very good platmormer, does not cut it as a killer ap must have launch title. If a new 3D mario game was available at launch I might have picked one up.
Zelda at Launch for Wii, even though it was a port, had to have did wonders for system sales.

Yeah, when you start the game it asks which you want to use.
And yeah, right now at $350 it doesn't have the library to back it up - but what console does at launch? I figure by being an early adopter I can get good games as they come out instead of getting the system a year from now and having a big back log.

I wasn't planning on buying one for a while. There aren't any games out for it currently that I'm interested in and either don't already have it for another system or couldn't get it for another system except for Mario. My wife is really more into Mario than I am, though, and we have a few other Mario games to work through if either of us got the itch. So, I was basically Zelda waiting.
I ran into 4 deluxe models (plus some basic, but who cares about basic?) at a nearby Target. I hadn't expected to actually see any in the wild (especially the deluxe), so I was a little surprised. I had the money and figured I'd have bought some time anyway, though, so I went ahead and impulse bought it.
I didn't get any other games for it besides the Nintendo Land that comes with it. The single player bits are okay; nothing spectacular. The Zelda portion is basically a sample of Diet Caffeine Free Skyward Sword that has become warm and flat. The DK one was cool. The Yoshi one is neat, I guess, but I kind of got tired of it quickly. Basically its okay. It probably works better as a party game, but my wife is the only one I'd play with and its difficult for us both to have time to play a game or something now, so...
The system itself is fine. The gamepad is cool. I don't really even notice the extra space between my hands, so whatevs there. I kind of wish they had nixed the Wiimote's and the motion control, though. It just seems kind of cheap to not only be able to "plug in" an old controller from the previous gen and use it but to also be expected to have one ready... I have plenty, though, so its really more of a principle thing than a real drawback, I guess.
Anyway, that's all I really have. I look forward to seeing what else Nintendo has planned for the Wii U.

On another forum I visit (cubed3.com), people are really worried about the lack of 3rd party support. The launch was pretty good, but there's hardly anything announced for the coming year.

Yeah 3rd party support is worrying so early in the system's life.. it has more "major" titles than the Wii at this point, but it dries up quickly.
As for system movers, I think LEGO City Undercover has HUGE potential that folks are ignoring.

Where's LEGO Lord of the Rings? I'm pretty sure it's coming, based on how well the LEGO games sold on Wii (at least, I think).
I'll probably buy that if it's €30 like the other versions. :)
It would be really nice if big games like BioShock Infinite and GTA V would come to Wii U.

Did you try the Rayman Legends demo yet? I downloaded, but haven't started it yet. I did beat Rayman Origins today... as in 246/246 Electoons. Some levels are so hard...
Today New Super Mario Bros. U arrived! :D Going to play that now. Should be good. :)
Oh I heard there's this PlayOn TV app, which streams video content from free video sites. Apparently the first year is for free! I hope it's also available in EU.
Of course I am getting a Wii U - its a Nintendo console!

Nintendo needs to announce some killer ap. Is retro working on a new Prime? A new 3d Mario title in the works? Mario Kart WiiU?
If I knew any of the above titles were 6 months to a year away, I would consider picking up a WiiU right now. As it stands I dont see any announced titles that are worthy of a system purchase. Pikmin 3 will be good, but I was never a HUGE fan of the series.

A new 3d Mario title in the works?.
They have said this is being worked on. No other details.

They've got Rayman Legends, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Monster Hunter 3U and some other stuff for Q1. And then Pikmin 3, Wii Fit U, Game & Wario, etc. for Q2. By then we'll have had Eł with some new game announcements.
It's not great, but all new consoles don't have that much in the first year.

Well, there haven't been any anouncements about Mario Kart. Smash Brothers appears to be at least a year away... and we still haven't heard anything from Retro. With the big guys having left a year ago, we don't even know what state the developer is in.

I really hope Retro is working on Zelda for WiiU. I think Miyamoto has hinted at that sort of thing hasnt he? Or at least letting a western devoloper give Zelda a try? I think when a game is in the hands of the same team for too long it can start to get a little stale. I loved Skyward Sword, but I believe it was slightly over-rated by some, including IGN.

It's quite the opposite
He's hinted at not wanting Western developers to work on it because would be difficult for constant communication between them and Nintendo of Japan

Eh, whatever. It worked with Metroid Prime didnt it?
I dont know, in my opinion Retro can do no wrong. So far at least. They have never made a bad game.

Nintendo is evidently working on getting the Wii U virtual console up and running, AND will have it so you can play VC games on the gamepad.
Good lord, that would be the best thing ever.

I feel like they would charge you to buy these games or a Wii U friendly version again though.
We shall see.

I don't think they will. The idea that you can already access this game on the same system by clicking one menu button, but you can't play that one on the gamepad, where you would have to click a different menu button to buy it again so you could play it on the gamepad...I think that would be too tough for most customers to swallow.

I HOPE that's how Nintendo will think... But part of me fears they'll just bring it as a huge fantastic reboot that is totally worth paying for. :(
Edith: downloading the ZombiU demo right now.

Yup, zombied this thread.
I do hate that in NSMBU, you can't use the Wii U Controller Pro in any mode. The Wii remote is OK, but I ALWAYS hit A or B trigger accidentally when holding the remote sideways.
And of course, several things have been confirmed since the last post here. VC games will be charged for on Wii U, but not by much if you've already bought it on Wii Shop. And of course, killer-apps Zelda, Mario, and Xenoblade 2 were announced.
Even with PS4 looming, all it takes is a Wii Fit U to put Nintendo right back into mindshare, and several million homes.

Makes you wonder: where IS Wii Fit U?? And what's taking the other games so long?
Anyway, I'm still happy with the Wii U, even though I don't play much atm. I still have Trine 2 waiting for me.

Yeah I've still got to beat Trine 2. I've finished Little Inferno, NSMBU, Black Ops 2, and Assassin's Creed 3.
I still have to finish Razor's Edge, ZombiU, Scribblenauts, Chasing Aurora and The Cave.
IMO, I love the console, and the only reason I don't play games on it right now is because I use the console for everything else (TV Remote, web browser, Netflix, Amazon, and of course, MiiVerse).
I think I've spent more time posting pictures and talking about ZombiU than I have playing it- Miiverse just works so well with pulling content from games.
BTW, I just followed Shigeru Miyamoto on Miiverse from the Year of Luigi Community. Obviously there's no option to send friend requests. ;)

Im a little shocked you didn't get it sooner BABs. Im thinking it will be a holiday purchase for me this year. Although the new PS4 will likely be tempting also...

Oh I'm always about the games
And the deals
LEGO City, NSMBU and NintendoLand were a big enough pull now.

How is Trine 2 on Wii U? I have it on Steam and it looks great and it's nice to see an adventure game that forces you to think and solve puzzles as its main way of entertainment. I miss the days when that was the norm. I think it brings the extra content for free on the Wii U. Not sure.

Yeah it includes the DLC levels AND it has some exclusive Wii U levels. It's a great game and it looks gorgeous.
