My wife was kind enough to get me a PS3 for my birthday yesterday.
I'm looking through the PlayStation plus stuff in the store, and I think it's telling me if I subscribe to that service I can access games like Infamous 2 for free.
Is that for real? Is there any catch to that? Seems like a crazy good service if that's true.

Yea, its legit. I remember when I had playstation + for free as a thank you for putting up with the PSN outage, I downloaded the original Infamous and Little Big Planet for free.

Well, the original Infamous and Little Big Planet were just given out as free for the outage. It had nothing to do with PS+ itself (other than a free trial of PS+ was also given out).
Speaking of that, I think I remember from my free trial that you can only play the free games so long as you have a PS+ subscription. You can't just download a game and have it forever.

Yeah pretty much the only catch.
Free games only last as long as you maintain your sub
But discounts and stuff offered would remain even after your sub ends

I don't think that's too different from Live though, is it?
I'm pretty sure I can't play any of my XBL arcade games without first renewing my XBL membership (not like I can try anymore, or tried any time in the recent past). I remember running into that problem - it just wouldn't let me play some games I had paid for without re-buying XBL, granted that was years ago.
It's just that everyone always renews XBL so nobody would ever really notice otherwise, if that is the case and I'm just not remembering the problem incorrectly.
I don't have Plus now but for the time I had it - oh how wonderful it was. I've been thinking about getting it just because the perks are actually ridiculously good; with the plethora of old games you have access too - or seem to, or once did when I looked last.
And even if they rescind those free games once you stop paying for Plus, meh - they were free. That doesn't seem like a big deal to me. I figure my money is going towards server upkeep, online data storage, and server priority to those who don't pay. I wouldn't factor like my money is going towards me getting games, and rewarded with free server space and online storage.

It depends on the game, but most games removed the whole "You must be on xbl to play this game" thing. As long as you have a silver account you can still play your single player stuff. Like Symphony of the Night works fine without an internet connection.
