Another copyright infringement case. So it turns out Motorola accused MS of violating some wify and video codec patents. You gotta wonder how they let someone put patents on something that previously had them.

US patent law was built by lawyers who want to be able to continually sue over infringement. The data and technology company I work for is not a big one, but we have been in a perpetual state of legal action over the last 15 years. The standards for patents are so low that you can basically patent a general idea for the express purpose of suing anyone who comes up with something similar. These people make a living on out of court settlements. It's completely corrupt and will likely never change as long as trial lawyers continue to lobby against reform.

Even though it's a disgustingly filthy tactic - you've got to hand it to them for creating a renewable industry for themselves to endlessly profit from between each other.

I'd laugh if it gets banned - it totally won't, but the prospect of it happening is funny enough for me. I wonder how many little/teenage boys are anger-posting online about it riiiiiiight now.

This is so true from my experience as well... hopefully patent law is reformed in the future.

Twitter's patent policy is an interesting foray to breaking the ugly cycle of tech patent trolling, in case anyone here has not heard of it.

I highly doubt it will be banned. Microsoft is the most sued company in US history and they have a legal team the size of a small country. To us, this is extreme. To them, it's Tuesday.

Not only that if it got serious, they would just settle out of court I assume, and nothing would change.
