Announced at the Nintendo Direct last night.

The AR Shooter thing for 3DS actually sounds potentially really neat.

Nintendo President and CEO Satoru Iwata presented another Nintendo Direct live broadcast tonight giving us upcoming Nintendo software news and special announcements.
Kirby turns 20 this year, and the Wii will offer “memorial” Kirby games this summer for its anniversary. Japanese Club Nintendo members will also receive new goodies.
Just Dance 2 will be hitting Japanese shores and will be a bit more “culturalized” to fit in with Japanese audiences.
The Nintendo eShop will also release two titles that will complement the upcoming Pokemon Black and White 2 including an updated Pokedex 3D and a game called AR Shooter that will let players catch Pokemon in the real world and transfer them to their game!

Next, Iwata listed some upcoming games coming to Japan. These include Guild 01, Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry’s Wonderland 3D, Etrian Odyssey IV, Little Battler eXperience Explosive Boost, Taiko Drum Master: Chibi Dragon and the Mysterious Orb, Rune Factory IV. Whether they will be coming to US shores is unknown.
A teaser trailer of the upcoming Namco Bandai, Sega, and Capcom crossover RPG game Project X Zone was shown. Nothing much was revealed aside from what’s already on the website, (which isn’t much!)
Mario Tennis Open’s Mii customization was also explained. Players will be able to give their Miis over 200 items and different abilities depending on what they are wearing. The game comes out in the US next month.
Aside from a few other Japanese titles, Iwata also mentioned that the 3DS would be getting an update next week letting 3DS owners organize up to 60 items into one folder. The 3DS will also be getting a “patch” that will affect Kingdom Hearts 3D, New Love Plus, and Mario Kart 7, fixing some of its shortcut glitches. DLC for a few games like Kid Icarus Uprising and Theatrythm Final Fantasy will also be coming out in the coming months.
Iwata revealed the full name for the upcoming Animal Crossing title will be Animal Crossing: Tobidasu. “Tobidasu” could be translated as “Pop Out” or “Jump Out” or “Fly Out.” The game is coming out in the fall.

Finally, Iwata announced a new Mario title coming out in Japan in August titled New Super Mario Bros. 2, featuring classic sidescrolling gameplay like in the first game and the return of Raccoon Mario.
The 3DS firmware update also arrives in the US on April 25. Most of the Japanese games Iwata announced were set for Japan, with no American release date, so the chance of them getting localized is slim.

I love Mario.. I really do, but even for me Nintendo is going into overkill with the franchise.

We still have Mario Wii U to announce at e3.

Which means since 2007
We've had Galaxy 1/2, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Super Mario 3D Land, New super Mario Bros 2 and NEw Super Mario Bros Mii.

So slow down...

Eh, as long as they're high quality, which they have been, I can't really complain.

Boo 3DS, I want a new New SMB on Wii or Wii U with the awesome multiplayer of the first one on Wii.

I'm just curious - but why is Mario for 3DS, and the releases in the last few years 'going into overkill' for you?
Why didn't the overkill alert (for you) start at, Dr. Mario, Mario Paint, Paper Mario, Mario's Time Machine, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, Mario Kart, Mario Party, Mario Soccer, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, Mario and Wario, Mario's Missing!, Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympics, Mario Pinball, Mario Superstar Baseball, Mario Hoops 3on3, Super Paper Mario, Mario Sports Mix.

I wikipedia'd it. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_games_featuring_Mario) Mario is in 50+ games easy. Granted not all of those are Mario games - but they've seemingly had the plan to be raping his little Mexitalian visage since day one - he was the PunchOut! Ref, for fucks sake!

Yeah I don't get it... So many complaints about yet another Mario platformer.

Mario games are great!! Stop complaining and start playing! It's not like you have to buy it anyway.

The only complaint I have is that they keep recycling the same style of NSMB. Why not go for a unique graphical style like in Kirby: Epic Yarn?

Well, all we had platformer wise between Super Mario 64 and Galaxy was Sunshine. It seemed like "real" Mario games never got released during the 64 and GCN years, so maybe they're just catching up?

I don't count spin-offs.
I've never disagreed with the notion that Nintendo whores out the character of Mario.
But his main titles tended to be spread out.
6 years between Mario 64 and Sunshine.
5 years between Sunshine and the first Galaxy game.
Since Galaxy has been almost one a year sans 08

And possible two this year.

They've pretty much announced it...

Again I ask: why do you complain about too much Mario? As long as the games are good??

I personally didn't like NSMB on DS, I still have to finish it. I loved the Wii one, but mostly because of multiplayer. I'm also loving Rayman Origins.
So I hope this 3DS game will bring enough new stuff to the table. We've only seen 4 screenshots and we're already dismissing it...

Too much of a good thing can be bad for you.
Also, the notion is, if you throw them out in such rapid succession, the quality may begin to deteriorate at some point.

Granted at this point, there are like 4 different teams working on Mario titles.

Ok, now I'm actually pretty excited about NSMB2. And I don't even own a 3DS.

I'm reading through Iwata Asks and I was amazed by just 1 aspect. It's about the camera in the 2player coop. They can't zoom out the screen like they did with the Wii, so they didn't know how to solve it.
Then they came up with a solution that itself turned into a great element: the camera focusses on whoever is the 'leader'. And you can compete for being the leader (by pounding the other player). Watch the video on this page and you'll know what I mean: http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/3ds/nsmb2/0/4

Genius. They grab a problem and turn it into a great game element.
