So finally Nintendo is giving users personal accounts, communication, sale of digital items and full retail games will be sold over the service. It took them a long time but finally they (seem to) have given up their archaic ways and are now embracing new business and operational models.

I will be happy with just friend list, messaging, voice chat (full with cross game voice chat) and knowing what your friends are playing atm. But if they can add cloud saves I'll really be extremely happy.

So what are your thoughts on this, guys?

Here's a more elaborate break down.

Obviously a good thing. That is all.

I hope they will have accomplishments expanded by the time it goes live. It shouldn't be too hard. I would love to have a Zelda 100% completion accomplishment to show off.

Supporting the feature is one thing, but how well it's executed is another story.

Well most of that is on the 3DS.. in some fashion or another.
You have your friend list, and can see what friends are playing and can even join their game from your friend's list.
While it isn't really that great as a messaging service, SwapNotes can also send/receive messages system wide.
I just think they take their time with these things.

Yeah, I think lip service is nice, but this wasn't even a demo of the features. Just listing what they are.

If by "up-to-date" you mean "things everyone did years ago", yay - welcome to the past, Nintendo!

Does up-to-date has any other meaning?

And I agree with Gecko. Execution is very important. It can make or break the experience.

Maybe a fan base and trusted history. If there is one thing Microsoft can count on, it is bringing along millions of Xbox Live users with a new console.

Wouldn't that be out of the context of the original statement? I only meant as far as technology goes. You can't cross the bridge without getting there first.

Yeah. The biggest limitation I can see is that Third Party developers who need to invest the time and money to make a multiplayer experience will make their game for Microsoft or Sony, who have established online communities. The next Halo or Modern Warfare game already has a guaranteed online base.

Nintendo is going to need to create an online base through first party titles.

Getting an audience won't be difficult to be honest, they have several franchises that are multi-player centric.

And as we saw with the hype surrounding Brawl BEFORE it launched, fans are more than eager for a dedicated online experience with some of their brands.

Kart, Smash Bros, Mario Party - all potential online games. For sure.

I'm a dreamer....what I want to see is online gaming support for Virtual Console titles. :D

Imagine...playing Goldeneye online. Oh man.

They released Goldeneye for the Wii.
You can play it online.

GoldenEye 007 features both offline split screen for up to four local players and online play for up to eight players.

I think he means old-school Goldeneye, but you know this.

Goldeneye.. to me is one of those games that is best left in the 90s. Its fun for its time, but really doesn't hold up compared to modern shooters. If Perfect Dark XBLA is anything to go by anyhow

I wasn't trying to be a dick.
At first I made a post about how I thought it was on XBL, but then I wiki'd it.
I legitimately didn't know if he knew it existed or not. I don't know how popular it is.

All this talk makes me want to go plug in my N64. :ohreilly:

The single player is fun.. the multi.. is a CoD clone in disguise.

I like Retro games, but not all of them make the jump into this gen really.

Some concepts are just out of date or doesn't work anymore (coins for lives in arcade titles for example)

The framerate and controls are the only thing holding Goldeneye back, imo. The multiplayer map design was awesome. I LANed up my house and got some 6-player Unreal Tournament 99 going. Downloaded the Goldeneye Maps for UT99.

Complex is one of the best maps...ever. Facility and Temple are so memorable. And the Caves, Bunker, and Stack all hold up.

The Complex will go down as one of those legendary FPS maps, like De_Dust or Facing Worlds or 2Fort.

Shit...thread idea.
