I'm sure we've had threads like this before, but the site isn't exactly beaming with activity.

Doing some research for a future episode of the podcast, and was just curious what's everyone's personal top 5 games of all time is.

And also what criteria you used to determine it.

My criteria is pretty simple: whichever games I have the fondest memories of, and had the best time playing.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

This is such a stereotypical game to have in the first slot, but it has earned this position in every way that a game can earn it. It revolutionized a genre. I had friends in elementary school who I talked to every day about it. I heard the Ocarina songs in my sleep. I had a crush on Zelda. I was the Hero of Time.

2. Pokemon Silver

As great as Red and Blue were, these games were impossibly good. The introduction of day/night was, at the time, a feature which made the game amazing to me. I had a fantasy world which moved along with mine. It was also a game I played with my brother, both of us laying around our bedroom working our way through the same game a the same time.

3. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

I actually played this on the Xbox instead of the PC, since at the time I didn't have a PC that could run it. That meant no mods, no texture packs, no new faces for the horrible looking NPC's. But that didn't really matter to me - I had never really played PC games so I didn't know what I was missing.

I spent a huge amount of time playing this game, and I never once started the main story. I became rich by becoming a master of alchemy, which I did by stealing the equipment needed to make the best potions. I sold those for gold, and rose through the ranks of the Mage's Guild, and after that, the House Telvanni. Along the way I explored caves, forts, or did whatever else I felt like doing.

4. Fable II

Still my favorite 360 game. I loved the story in this one, but more so than that I loved the character and personality of the world. It had a surreal feel to it akin to the feeling I get when reading the Chronicles of Narnia.

I can't begin to express my appointment over Fable III.

5. Team Fortress 2

I think last time I checked I've put over 130 hours into this game. Addictive, simple, and fun. Probably the only FPS I've gotten really "good" at.

Yeah I've done this on Twitter, facebook and Google Plus, I've got, over 50 people or so to respond.

Of those, I believe 20 have had OoT on their list, and of course, it is the highest number.

OK. So the browser went back after I had written a good amount of text so screw this, this is the readers digest version:

Zelda: a Link to the Past - This game is timeless, has aged well and keeps me coming back to it without tiring me, unlike it's bigger brother OOT which I'm a little burnt out of despite how good it is.

Portal 1 - 2 - This game has truly innovative gameplay done right from the first time it introduced it. The characters and story line are well thought out and well presented. The sound track is really cool too. All in all this is a one-of-a-kind game.

Phantasy Star Online - This is the game that got me into online rpgs (MMO or not). The story line is amazing without the need of trying to impress you. It was more of a subtle story that got you very, very interested in it and the scenery of every part kept your interest in the planet Ragol and its mysteries. The Soundtrack is awesome and the last of its kind. The gameplay hasn't aged all that well though. It is simple and fun but it can get boring if you play the game too much. Still the timer was above 100 hours and this is considering that I lost my save files due to a glitch that sega caused when trying to fix an exploit. I must have spent above 300 hours on this game, maybe even 400+.

Team Fortress 2 - The game is still going strong so you should know everything about it. It's a class based multiplayer FPS which was very balanced when it came out but not that much anymore. It's still great but there are some people hacking on the free servers which made me quit it for some time.

And Last but not least

Silent Hill 2 - This game showed every other survival horror how it's done. Even my favorite ( at the time) Resident Evil which was on its way down. The atmosphere keeps you in suspense even when nothing is happening. The storyline kept you thinking and wasn't too easy to figure out. This is easily the best in the series in my opinion. And the third was was really good too.

Disclaimer : Only Link to the past is in order of preference as it is my favorite game of all time. I don't care enough about putting them in order anyways.

Honorable Mentions - Mario 64 got 3d controls done right from the start even though it was the first one of its kind. Before it, games like Tomb Raider had a static camera behind your character which held back 3D little.
Others : RE2, RE4, Metroid Prime (the whole series), Wrestlemania 2000, Golden Eye,

Half-Life 2's: I love good physics in games, and Half-Life takes the cake, along with a compelling story.

TF2: By far my favorite multiplayer game, mainly cause I kick ass at it.

Fallout 3/New Vegas: My favorite RPG. So much to do, I spent 70+ hours in New Vegas, before I actually went to Vegas. I always hate it when im getting near the end of the game or any of the dlc's. I want moar!

Halo: I love all Halo cannon. Sci-fi is my favorite genre, and Halo has that coming out of the wazzu. Its story is awesome too.

I dunno: Ive played a lot of games, but theres not that many that I go back to time and time again. Guess im waiting for a new game to catch my interest.

Honestly it'd be so hard for to make a top 5 list. I'm gonna base it on hours cashed in the game and/or looking up unfo about the game though.. If I just did quality I'm not going to be able to do less than 10.

Anyway:
-Final Fantasy XI: Very hard MMORPG, but it's a real MMORPG.. the type where the society in the game has to accept you for you to get anywhere, and it takes teamwork to do everything including level. Plus it's the last Square FF game before they flipped their lid and got rid of the basic classes like white mage, black mage, monk, etc. Also has 90+% of the classic spells, and an amazing story line.

-World of Warcraft: This is another "MMORPG" but it's the polar opposite of FFXI. Absolutely no teamwork is needed to get to the highest level and near the highest gear. Reputation means nothing, none of the gear is special, the story line is shallow, and the music/environment is all dry. But can't deny that this game has it's charm. The only reson I still have a subcription is that I don't feel guilty or like I owe anyone anything when I dissapear from the game for weeks at a time. MMORPG concept, without the hard work or adiction factor. Worked well.

-Metal Gear Solid Series: Mainly referring to MGS2-4, and MGS portable ops. Amazing story telling value, and lots of philosophy. A story that was built for a video game. A book or a movie would have never done it justice. And even though the gameplay parts of it were limited, it was very polished.

-Pokemon Gold/Silver: Pokemon Blue was the first RPG I really got into. It snagged me in before the whole Playstation RPG hurricane hit. Gold/silver(/crystal) was the best the series had to offer, everything after was just going down hill. I got to the 200+ mark, but never did catch them all lol.

-NBA 2k series: I've cashed many MANY hours of my life into playing these games, and they only seem to get better and better each year. 2k11 crossed the line into being the greatest sports simulation game in history (Yeah I said it, name one better and I'll say why it isn't lol). I have a feeling things may go down hill from here due to lack of competition.

My favorite games have also been the ones I've pumped the most amount of time into, so the list is as follows:

NBA 2k Series
I have owned each iteration of the series since 2k4, and just this past year, played every single game of an entire season on Hall of Fame difficulty in Association mode with the LA Clippers. 82-0, undefeated in the playoffs, Blake Griffin MVP, received the 2nd and 4th picks of the draft, and more...and this is after 2 different My Player modes, and completing most of the Jordan challenges...That's a lot of bang for your buck...and that's just this last year.

Morrowind
So huge, I still reminisce about the sheer size of the game, and the amazing feeling of utter freedom it bestowed on me the first time I played it...and the second time...and the third time...and on and on and on. Never once did I get near 20% completion of the main quest, and easily punched in hundreds of hours in this sucker. I would read the strategy guide while in bed at night, anticipating what my adventures would be like the next day. It's because of Morrowind that I think any game with less than 30 hours of single player storyline is incredibly short.

Pokemon Red
The craze that surrounded this game, on top of the fact that this franchise encapsulated the years of my life when I was as much of a kid as I can remember, makes Pokemon Red an experience that I will never forget.

Phantasy Star Online I & II
My only foray into the world of MMORPG, if you can even consider PSO one. Was addicting to say the least, and not many of my experiences in video games have matched the thrill I would get when coming into contact with that red rare drop box and the wonders within. Mmmm. Also, planning the evolution of my Mag(s) was a very cerebral and engaging experience.

Chrono Cross
The story, the music, the combat system, the environments, the emotion, the characters, the depth, and the fact that just thinking about this game makes me happy and sad at the same time...

Bonus:
Project Ego aka Fable
The only reason I ever began visiting forums is because of a one paragraph feature GamePro or EGM had on Project Ego sometime earlier last decade. The vision Peter Molyneux had for this game blew my mind, and I literally spent every day for several years discussing the potential and realities of the game through all its development stages on the BBB and Lionhead forums. Those forums influenced me and my opinions on everything from music and movies, to humor and internet etiquette, and laid the foundation for many of the skills which I have today.

The game could never have been able to live up to the hype I instilled in it, but the fact that it exposed me to the world of online forums, which eventually led me to Gametavern and all the other places I have visited over the years, means that Project Ego will always have a special place in my heart.

Woah, I never knew making a personal top 5 could be so hard.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Among all the other good things, I especially love the great gameplay.

Starcraft II
The campaign is good, the multiplayer is awesome. So balanced, so diverse, so much fun. I'm currently in Diamond league and I'm trying to become a Master.

Super Metroid
Samus all alone on a rainy planet makes for a great atmosphere. Slowly discovering the planet is incredible.

Super Mario World
There was just so much to do in this game. And when you finished it, you just started all over again a few months later.

Perfect Dark
I can't count the hours I've put into this game. The multiplayer with friends, the campaign solo. It's the perfect example of what the N64 was really about

Runner ups:

Warcraft III
Zelda: Twilight Princess
Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Mario Galaxy
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
World of Warcraft
Warcraft II

I actually played Perfect Dark this weekend at a friends house.

That game is still insanely fun. Area 52 was such a great map. We were running around with proximity mines and double shot shotguns.

Love me or hate me here's my list:

Zelda - Ocarina of Time

Once again, at the top of my list, and not because it was extremely meaningful to me when I was younger. It was, but the problem was I never finished it until I got the Wind Waker special pre-order bonus disc that had the game on it.

But maybe that's why it was so good to me. To think that after four years and new advancements in technology I could go back and start the game fresh, and it still is as compelling and fun to play as it was when I (unsuccessfully) played the game back when it was popular to be into it. (Kind of a moot point because people still love to love this game, but again, all for good reason).

Zelda - Twilight Princess

Uh oh. More Zelda in the list? Don't care. Simply don't. I played the Wii version, and this was at a time where my purchasing/finishing games ratio was absolutely skewed towards more purchases than completion. I hadn't been this bad until...well recently with more of my used game purchases for older consoles.

Twilight Princess to me was an amazing way to take the storytelling from OoT and expand on it, with the missing princess, your relationship with your helper (Midna), and exploring two worlds that while similar were also different (although OoT definitely saw more differences between the two; you could argue the other world in TP was the same world with a filter over it). I dunno, I was amazed at how good a Zelda game could be. It was like playing and finishing the OoT that I never did years ago.

I felt this attachment to these characters and this world and you can believe that I was sad when the events of the ending came to pass. I still watch the ending on YouTube from time to time to make sure that the way the ending came together with the music, and the plot conclusion came out were as good as I remember it, and it still is. I blame the music for my attachment to it mostly. I'll listen to the end credits music over and over because every note from the part with Midna to when the words The End come up are pure gold.

Shadow of the Colossus

This was my first entry in the Team Ico world as I had never played Ico simply because I never knew what it was and never bothered to spend the money to find out (I eventually bought the game and played through it, but that's neither here nor there). I had burned Shadow of the Colossus out of curiosity for my then hacked PS2 because I had seen it on top PS2 game lists and I wanted to know what the fuss was about, and boy did I find out quickly.

It's another perfect example of great simplicity in it's storytelling by just having you, your horse, this one girl who you shouldn't care about because to you the player, she has no real connection, and this voice that keeps instructing you on what to do and where to go.

I was just blown away by the scale of all of the colossi (except for maybe the bull; that thing was a douche and a half), the way the music changed to increase the intensity, all leading up to this ending where I personally stood shocked and saddened by the outcome. Simply amazing.

Chrono Trigger

I should say the Chrono series really, because Chrono Cross is the one more relevant to me as I was growing up since I didn't experience Trigger until my days of emulation, but Trigger is the only one I've come back to to get a refresher on the story, and to get 100% completion of as a matter of fact. I own the game both for the SNES now (bought it used in high school) and I have recently completed the DS version of the game so I got to experience it twice since the translation was different and they adjusted the controls for the battles blah blah WHATEVER. It's still as fun to play (and easy to break) as I remembered it being once I bought the original copy and finished it, and that was including going the extra mile to finish all of the side quests (including the new ones added for the DS version) just to see that one new ending that tied the game a little more to Chrono Cross.

For the record, I'm usually against Square Enix retconning (see: Shinra in Final Fantasy X-2 possibly being some crazy ancestor of whomever started Shin-ra in FF7 and the baby son of the last dragoon in FF2 being named Kain or some shit like that). This ending probably is just that retconning, but I was at least curious enough to experience it myself instead of delegate that time to doing a YouTube search to see it.

Silent Hill 2

It wasn't my first foray into the series. It wasn't my last. It was definitely the best for me though. It was where the series really hit its peak. It wasn't scary because it was scary. It was scary because it didn't need to be. It did enough psychological scarring from the imagery of Pyramid Head and all the other new monsters that it didn't need to scare you. It knew that it was gonna have it's effect on you without a cat jumping out of a locker out of nowhere to make you jump.

Akira Yamaoka's music is another reason the games have stood so well after so long as well. It's industrial. It's ambient. Sometimes it's more one than the other, but it knew when it needed to be one or the other. It drew you into the town with it's fantastic sound direction. Yamaoka's departure is probably marking the official departure of the series, because at least Homecoming and Shattered Memories were okay. Who knows about Downpour, and for fuck's sake Book of Memories is an isometric top-down multi-player game. They can't even do the re-dub of voices right in any way for Silent Hill 2, and the voices were what drove the game to where it did as well. It was miles away from the voice acting in the first game.

Okay I'm done I swear

#1 - Half-Life: I've already talked this one up a hundred times here, but this is the framework for all FPS games that don't hark back to Doom. Oh, and it submerged you in the world of Black Mesa and gave you an awesome game to boot. I'd also consider No One Lives Forever as a desert island pick for this spot.

#2 - Counter-Strike: I've also talked this one up.

The bottom 3 rotate for me in a big way and I would have a hard time breaking it down.

I think right now I'd say:

#3 - OoT/Link's Awakening - These two games sucked me into the world of Zelda and defined my childhood. OoT is classic Zelda and I've played through that game way too many times. Link's Awakening is seriously the most underrated Zelda title.

#4 - Rollercoaster Tycoon/GTA3 - Sandbox games are the mother fucking business. This one is a toss-up. I played RCT to death and still play it on occasion. GTA3 changed my life by putting a city into my house...and letting me fuck that city up. Nothing says retribution like getting rear-ended by a pedestrian and pulling that asshole out of his car and lighting him on fire with a Molotov. That's therapy, baby.

#5 - Mario franchising this bitch - I can't say here. Super Mario 64 blew me away, but so did Super Mario Bros. 3. And I have spent hours upon hours (sober and not sober) playing Mario Kart and Mario Party. And the occasional successful spinoff like Paper Mario....

If I had to pick a desert island Mario title, the line of questioning would go like this:

Will I be alone?

Yes -> probably Paper Mario 64 or maaaybe Super Mario Sunshine

No -> Mario Party 2 or Mario Kart 64

Notable mention to Halo, L4D, Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie, a handful of racing titles, a handful of platformer titles, etc. This is a tough question so instead of answering based on philosophical qualifications I just rolled with the games I love and play the most.

Really quick, off the top of my head:

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2. Mass Effect
3. Final Fantasy VI
4. Shenmue
5. Dragon Quest VIII

Five really isn't a lot... Those are the games that leapt to mind at the moment. If I answered yesterday (or if I were to have answered tomorrow) it probably would have been a slightly different list.

1. Legend of Zelda : Link to the Past

This one just can't be beaten for me. As much as I've enjoyed the 3D games, I think this version is the best. I've waited for them to make a better Zelda, but I don't think it's been done. Ages and Seasons for Gameboy Color came close, but the pace and mood of Link to the Past is just amazing.

2. Super Mario World

Again, I think this version is the best Mario. I've played and beaten this game more than any other game I believe, and I never really get tired of it. It's simply fun, and the graphics are still beautiful. I also think the SNES era was a perfect age for me.

3. Secret of Mana

Another SNES game, but I guess that's my general mood. After just replaying this recently with some friends, it all came back to me. Just the fact that it's a 3-player action RPG is great enough for me. The mood, music, and story are fun as well. I think just playing a long game like this with a couple friends is too fun.

4. Bubble Bobble

This is a very simple game at it's core, but yet again, so fun. Another 2 player co-op game, this is another one I can always go back to and enjoy. Trying collect this elusive "secret letters", getting the proper warps, etc...Still such a good game.

5. Shenmue 2

I loved the first one, but liked this one even more. This game's graphic beauty and emotion has definitely always stayed with me. I remember getting the UK import for my Dreamcast from my local Electronics Boutique. Part of the reason I love this game is that it never really even came out for the DC in the US, but I had it. I actually may fire up my DC just to try to play this again.

They have a custom thing you can burn now that copies your save from the first one to the UK import version of the second one, if you're curious and you want to keep your items and the like.

I actually forgot about how much time I wasted playing the hell out of Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow and Gold and Silver. I think the series just became a ridiculous collect-fest after that, and I'm still waiting for my full 3D MMORPG, but in the meantime I'll sing praise to the original Pokemon games and the Gold/Silver sequels. Those might contend for a my top-5 rotation.

Oh golly.
Let's try this.
I know it's like a cop-out because I'm going to be naming series' rather than specific games.

1: The EA NHL series of games. Ever since the very first one came out in 92 (I believe), I (or my brother, if living together) have owned every single game of the series.

2: The Sim City series. I love these games infinitely. I'm all about micromanagement. Sim City4 was probably one of the most amounts of fun I've had with any game that's relatively the same.

3: Civilization: Call To Power. It was the first Civ game I ever played, and I still love it to this day. Obviously there are things it could be improved on as it's nowhere near the newer games, but the thing I like about it is the 35+ civilizations you can be, and the fact that if one city revolts for too long they'll actually form their own civilization at random. I loved that.

4: The Total War series. My favourite of the series would have to be Medieval II, or Rome. If you've never played these games (and have a computer capable)m, I highly suggest giving it a shot.

5: Battlefield 1942 - Just a really great war sim as far as I'm concerned. I love the fact you can fly/boat/vehicle it up.

1. Battlefield 1942 When this game came out, nothing really had much on it. The reticule controls were finicky and unusually unreliable compared to MoH or CoD, and the strategy of incorporating armoured vehicles into control capture and other game modes simply offered more fun than what other gen shooters could. Made me want to try the Tribe series. Looking forward to the new one (Tribes and BF3).

2. Unreal Tournament This game encapsulates the emergence of PC gaming as being a highly customizable, mod-friendly, and a more advanced alternative. I'd share this with valve's same gen offerings, but simply counterstrike never approached the original UT for ambience and 'bout fighting' goodness.

3. Half Life 2. Took ragdoll and advanced the notion of phsyics boundaries in game environments. Pretty solid cutscenes, animations of the new variety, and appropriate level progression make this an all-around winner.

4. RtcW (2001) This flamethrower spectacular totally blew me away. The role oriented multiplayer was awesome and the single player had some of the most impressive AI guises I have ever experienced. Fluid animations and appropriate nazi locales made this a far superior game than EA's alternatives.

5. NHL (series) / Crimson Skies I've spent a lot of time on the NHL games, particularly '98 since my first PC couldn't play 99'. Lots of fun. I also really enjoyed NBA live 95 and 96. Van Grizzlies : (

Crimson Skies holds a special place because it took the alternate history and did it in a partitioned america way that just works well. zeppelins? air pirates? proper protagonist? killer graphics? had it all.

Honourable mention goes to Warcraft II and III. Also the original Age of Empires took lots of my time.

Metroid Prime was a lot of fun, but I'd sooner add Circle of the Moon. I know that game was underrated and received with mix reviews due to the GBA's bad lighting. Had Nintendo not dropped those epic balls and put in a back light from the get go we wouldn't have had that discussion.
