Amidst anecdotal reports that 3DS sales have picked up on the heels of Nintendo's drastic price cut, the company has confirmed talk it will hold a 3DS-focused event just prior to the opening of Tokyo Game Show.

The Wall Street Journal reports the event will take place in Japan on September 13, but it isn't clear what Nintendo intends to announce or show. It may just be a showcase of its holiday lineup, but as Vita launch details should come out of TGS, they may want to make a bigger splash.

Rumors have been swirling the past few days about a potential 3DS redesign that includes a second analog stick, but as I have no way of verifying them, so please take 'em with a massive grain of salt.

A redesign that drastic already? I don't buy it, though a battery bump certainly couldn't hurt. Then again, maybe Nintendo wants a full reset.

Nintendo regularly holds a fall event in Japan where it shows off new games and makes announcements. Launch details for the 3DS were revealed during a similar event last September.

Not surprising as the article mentions its almost a yearly event.

What is baffling, though I guess expected, is they seem to want to ignore the Wii U for the rest of the year.

Not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

I think the Wii U announcement was premature, no major games to speak of to sell the new hardware, and killer apps are key. The Wii would have been nothing without Wii Sports to sell it. My guess out of the blue is Nintendo realized that, and so has been tight lipped about it until they actually have something to show again.

Though when is it supposed to launch again, early next year is it? Or late next year? Either way, for that reason it is surprising they're not talking about the Wii U much. My guess is it will get pushed back.

Now... a new design 3DS already?? I know it's a rumor, but wow if it's true. And they wonder why many people aren't buying the first iteration... though that's not really true, it's the same lack of killer apps not selling the 3DS in my opinion. Of course a price drop will spur sales, but it won't keep them going.

There's a rumor that it was supposed to launch in June (terrible timing imo), but because of technical problems with the processor in the U Pad it's now being delayed until September.

September is still earlier than I expect... and it gives developers the chance to make better games.

Oh I do believe the Wii U reveal was kind of forced on them after the initial leaks.

I felt like this was going to be Nintendo's e3 2005 where they mostly discuss the console and what they hope to achieve, but since all of those details were leaked earlier, they hobbled together a presentation on games and the likes...

The only problem though is with their silence since e3... well you get stuff like the rumors Angrist posted, which people will believe because there's nothing else

I can't believe it would be coming out September. Any time this year seems crazy early.

I redesigned 3DS will NOT be announced at this conference. As IGN stated in an article today, it would just TOTALLY make no sense after they just dropped the price to sell the current model of 3DS. I wouldnt expect a redesigned 3DS until e3 next year at the earliest.
