So if you guys don't know, Runic Games are the people behind Torchlight. If you haven't played Torchlight yet, I strongly urge you to do so.
Anyway, I stumbled across an interesting article about the making of torchlight, which also lead to some interesting points about their philosophy on games in general, and the last page of the article just sorta talks about their ideas for a free to play MMO, supported by micro-transactions.
I like these guys.

“We don’t want to sell anyone the most powerful sword,” says Erich Schaefer. “Maybe you can spend more money to increase your chances to getting these things, or speed up your levelling by a reasonable factor. Although it may be that the successful guilds need to spend a little more money, but we’ll look into that.”
