Bare with me, pretty new to this all so didn't know couldn't respond to an announcement thread.
But for anyone who is actually interested in being a mod, just let your intents be known here.
And at a later date, shall detail how this whole mess shall work.
And don't worry if not the most active poster or if you are relatively new. Sign-up is open to every and anyone who has an interest.

If you give me an official measure of the winkie I'll consider volunteering to pretend to want to sign up.

Serious suggestion: since moderators around here have pretty much become a joke position, you should wait a few days and only give the mod position to somebody who does NOT say they want it.
And I'd like to be a mod. :D

I nominate someone who has been here for a substantial amount of time.
I have modded here before and would do it again if you wanted me to.

What perks does the position have?

Its a good thing you asked.
I really don't know, a sense of satisfaction? The ability to rename threads? Sense of community?
That said since we have a decent amount of sign-ups, I guess should mention how this will be done. Instead of picking at random or with our limited staff poll, I was thinking would give everyone who signed up a week or so as mod to see what they bring to the table. How they would they would handle the job. What we could expect from them in their roles, and the type of activity they bring.

Haha, there isn't that much to do around here. You're basically giving people the power and saying "you only have a week to use this power". This will make them feel like they should exercise their power more than they should.
Sack up and ask people you think would be good.

Agreed. For the most part all of us that have been a part for a long time have matured to the point where not much real moderation is needed.

The reason we'd rather ask than appoint, is because we don't want to appoint someone who just 100% doesn't give a shit.

No, I get that. But just ask people you think would be good for it rather than making an open audition and giving week-long power to a guy with 24 posts.

The problem is, at least for me, is we don't know who would be good for it. I mean sure we could probably pick the most active members, but that doesn't mean that someone given the position wouldn't step up to the plate.
Listen, its not a perfect system and it isn't even decided yet, but I figured giving everyone a trial run would be for the best. People can surprise you, I hope.

I'll do my part...I can make sure to post tons of porn and racist posts and stuff that week to keep the new mods on edge. :D

What would expectations be? Like people have said, there's not really too much "moderating" that needs to go on. Quite honestly (and I don't know much about running a message board, so I could be completely wrong), I don't see why there even needs to be a moderator behind you and Typhoid beyond formality...? Or are you just looking for people to bring spice to the message board, 'cause anyone and everyone could help with that without being able to delete posts or whatever.
Whatever the reasons, I agree with Dylflon that an "open audition" is a pretty silly idea. Personally, I think you and Typhoid should privately discuss what members would be good for the job and PM them and discuss with each person about expectations and responsibilities and what they would bring to the table. Or, talk to everyone who posted in this thread. Or talk to everyone. But I think just giving whoever supreme mod powers and letting them run loose is, again, silly.

Who said anything about 'supreme mod powers'? :ohreilly: :p
Basically it's formality, mixed with giving someone the 'responsibility' of creating discussable threads every so often.
More about addition than subtraction.

Need more front page discussion with the possibility of contributing articles and editorials and less mod discussion. This place isn't unruly and I think we are all mature adults. And, in fact, I'm amazed at some of the moderating that does happen around here....

It's not really about actual moderating, as I just said:

I agree with Combine. He should be a mod

Maybe we shouldn't call em mods then.
Maybe content generators with powers.
