View Full Version : World Cup Fever?
With less than a week left until the WC starts, everybody's talking about it here. In the papers, on TV, in school, everywhere. I've even got a few friends who are betting that we will beat Brazil.
Then there's the competitions. Until about 3 weeks ago, there was a competition which got you tickets for the Brazil match. Another one, which ended about a month ago, gave away tickets for the China match.
Of course, the reason for this is because this is only our second time in he cup (the other one was in '54 - a little boy picked our name out of a hat :)).
How's it in your country? Is it on everybdy's mind, or is it a "who cares" situation?
Oh, and there one more thing I have to say. Argentina's star, Ariel Ortega, has been transfered to Fenerbahce (I'm a FB fan, so I just had to say this). If you're intrested, click here (http://www.fenerbahce.org/en/fbHaberOku.asp?ID=744).

Yea, they're tough. I always thought we would beat them, but the last two friendly games against Hong Kong and South Africa lowered my expectations (we beat HK 2-0 and lost 2-0 to SA).
I sure hope we do some good things.

Ok, you think the Fifa Rankings Mean Anything?
USA Doesn't deserve to be near the top 10.
They can't beat any top class european teams, the only reason they are that high is because they beat teams like Fiji and get points.
Fifa Rankings are so useless it's not funny, because if they were true, Ireland would probably be 2nd or 3rd,
They lost once in Qualifying, and it was the last game
We lost to Brazil 2-1 :baby:
We scored the goal at the end of the first half, the 47th minute. But Ronaldo equalised at 52 or something. Then at the 87th min. the ref. gave a penalty to Brazil for a shirt pulling which was 2 yards outside the box. Rivaldo scored, and we lost :baby:
And one thing I have to add, the goal Cameroon scored had gone out of bounds a few passes before the ball reached goal. It should've been a throw in.

The USA and S. Korea are tied right now with 4 points. S. Korea has to play Portugal, a good team. The USA plays Poland, a team who has yet to win.
If the USA keeps playing like they have, they will move on to the next round and shock the world.
On a side note, Germany is doing damn good too.
Even though it happened yesterday, WE CAME IN SECOND IN THE GROUP!!! It's so great! And only our second time in the Cup!
The match ended at 11:15 in the morning, but people were still celebrating at 4 in the afternoon.
Now we play against Japan.

Well, it was ugly, but the U.S has advanced (Thanks South Korea!)
We looked pretty bad against Poland, but since Portugal went down 2 men, Korea took advantage and scored. Even 2 men down Portugal had 3 or 4 really good chances to tie the score and eliminate the U.S, but they didn't and now we take on Mexico. THat's been a good rivalry, so hopefully we'll pull it off.
Well, it's great we (United States) advanced. I believe we face Mexico next, I'm not sure how good they are though. That game is on june 17th by the way. Anyone know which channel will be covering it in the U.S.?
The Germanator
06-14-2002, 04:59 PM
Well, I'm sure ESPN or ESPN 2 will carry it live at 2:25 A.M which is it's live time in the U.S I believe. Then ABC will re-broadcast it at a more reasonable time like 1 or 2 P.M o'clock later that day.

That's what Italians say. The rest of the world says the ref was very good, one of the best.
The offside was false, but that wasn't the ref's fault. And it's not like South Korea didn't deserve to win, they played pretty good, in the end better than Italy.
In every WC there are wrong decisions. Like how Belgium was defeated by Turkey.

No they don't. All I've heard this World Cup from all of my Soccer mates (English, Serbian, Croatian, Australian, Korean, Japanese) is that this has been the worst World Cup when it comes to reffing!
The Argentinans and French said the same thing about the refs as well. France were robbed of a goal, and in a World Cup, these mistakes shouldn't be made. They should have a video referee to replay the point for very close calls.
ANd if a goal is a goal, of course people are gonna complain (especially considering that Italy had 2 disallowed goals when against Croatia, one disallowed against Mexico, and one "potential goal" disallowed against Korea). And a whole lot of bs rulings!
And this happened so much to the Italians, and they were ALL goals. If you looked @ the replays correctly.
It's been said by many (even the non Italians) that Italy has had the worst luck this World Cup when it comes to the refs, and I agree. Especially putting an Equadorian Coach for Korea v Italy.
And for FIFA to apologise to the world about the ref for Croatia vs Italy (on Italy's behalf), well there's gotta be something wrong. Oh and they kicked that referee out of the World Cup.
Also I think Italy played MUCH better than Korea in the first half. Considering they were IN Korea and the crowd was booing Italy every time they got the ball!
2nd half Korea were desperate so they kept attacking in hope for a goal, and eventually got it. And I think they had the better 2nd half.
PS There are mistakes made, but to Italy, there were FAR too many

Koreans will do anything to win, even if it means cheating. Remember the Olympics? After that Korean short track skater pushed Apollo Onno and got eliminated, Korea threatened to leave the tournament early, even though it was very clear that the Korean skater cheated. It's not that I don't like Koreans, but it's just their mentality. Win, or kill everyone trying.

It was weird, the Americans had the ball all the time and just couldn't penetrate the German's defense. Once the Germans got the ball they could shoot on the goal within 10 seconds! But the USA also had some nice chances.
And they made a goal, just one German stopped it with his hand!!! I'm sure of it, it was hard to see but from one angle it was obvious!!
Can South Korea beat Spain? I think so. Then they'll face Germany. :errr:
Oh well. The US team looked good out there even though they lost. Germany was the better team, but they sure look ugly out there. They aren't entertaining at all, imo. All they do is use their strength and height to kick or head butt the ball as far as they can. Whenever the US team was able to squeeze through the defense there would always be a German to launch it back to midfield with their incredible power.

Unfortunately I couldn't watch the second half of the game, but entire Holland is excited!! :D
I look at it this way: Soccer (football) is most defiantly not a major sport here. Golf, tennis, basketball, football, hockey, and Nascar are all bigger sports than soccer (football) here. Now being one of the top 8 soccer (football) teams is an amazing feet for any country. Some Country's whose main focus is soccer (football) live to get in the top 4 or 8. Frankly the American public could care less. But, if our main sport was soccer, we would get much farther.

Yeah.. that's the truth. I tend to think that football [football :sneaky:] is our main sport.. oh vell

Bobcat please stop the griming. You can't do anything about it, and it's not like they didn't deserve it. They were at least as good as Italy and Spain. In some ways...
When's the next match???

Excuse me but when you see the co host nation have AT LEAST 3 disallowed goals which were clear goals against 3 top ranked World Cup soccer teams (Portugal, Italy, Spain), it kinda gets me pissed off. So don't tell me what to do. This is a Sports forum and I'll do as I wish (without offending anyone of course)
***EDIT*** Sorry for the anger there Angrist, didn't mean to take it out on you :beerchug:
I understand I can't do anything about it. There is NO WAY in the world that Korea deserve to be where they are now. They play well, they have improved quite a bit, but it's scaringly unfair how they got there after the Spain, Italy and Portugal matches(especially Spain match!). If anybody watched those matches, they would know what I'm talking about. They've even brought this issue up in the papers/news. It's not something that will be just brushed along and forgotten about.
I'm glad Korea are the first Asian team in history to make it through to the semi's. It's good to see other countries getting better in the World Cup. But it's BS how they got there.
BTW I have nothing against Korea. I am hoping that they win the world cup now. They are the team I would like to win now (now that Senegal is out).
Put it this way. One disallowed goal in a game is fair enough. I would not be complaining. But there have been WAY too many for Korea.
So yeh :burger:

BTW what dissalowed goal do you mean? The second one, where the ref had wistled and the Spanish players kept on playing?? I haven't seen that 'goal', but I just heard that both 'almost goals' shouldn't have been goals.
If you can understand my weird English... :(

You haven't even watched the games
:hmm:
The 2nd one was a goal (first should have been).
The ball did not cross the Korea line. It was always in. They even showed closeups of it.
Watch the game (especially the one where the ball was ruled outside of Korea's Goal Line or something).

Well... Where to begin?
I tipped Italy to win the worldcup... Oh how wrong I was (I support them too). One team I wasn;t surprised by was Turkey. To me, they are THE MOST under rated team in the world. They play lovely, attacking, and might I say flowing football. Their defence isn;t even half bad either. Sas, Basturk and Tuguy are class acts, and I really do think they have a great chance against Brazil, it will be a great match.
Moving onto the Korea-Germany match. Somehow, this all too obvious feeling in my head is tellinng me that Korea will be the ones to progress into the finals. I wonder why .
I, like others, do believe there was a conspiracy. It wasn't just obvious in the games that Korea had participated in, but also games in which they didn't. Look at Italy's games in their group stage. How many decisions went against them? How many goals disallowed? I believe that 'most unknown' referees were instructed to see the 'best' teams out. But Italy did progress.
Now... onto other things. I well and truy believe that the winner of the Brazil-Turkey match will go onto to win the cup. The reason I predict Turkey to beat Brazil is because Brazil has a suspect defence, or rather, has NO defence, and will ultimately be split open by a much improved Turkey (a team which KEEPS ON improving). It will be a test of 'who can score more', and because Turkey has a much better defence that Brazil, and an attack which could match Brazil's on it's day, they should be able to go through.

I know huh! It's so unfortunate that they Italy got kicked outta the cup this way.
An Equadorian ref in Italy Vs Korea is a STUPID decision. Especially considering the following points:-
1) Italy beat Equador 2-0 in their first game
2) It was his first official World Cup game of reffing!
People might say "It doesn't matter coz refs can't be bias" etc, but the point is it's a STUPID decision. And there were disallowed goals in that game (again) which were goals!
Don't even get me started on Italy Vs Croatia, or Italy Vs Mexico.
That's why I think Korea don't deserve to be where they are at all. They are a good team, but the way they have made it through to the semi's is simply too <insert word here>.
This is the worst World Cup EVER!
I too suspect a little conspiracy, that ball did bloody not cross the line and the linesman had his flag up very late IMO.
But at the end of the day it all went down to penalties and the game then was determined only by the players skill so in the end Korea won with their own player skill not by default.
The question of weather the game should have gone into penalties is still to be decided. It probably should not have done.

Let me guess why you support Italy... Might it be because of a certain Christian Vieri? :D He was born in Australia wasn't he?
Well anyway, he's the best damn striker in the world. Shame he missed an easy chance that could have finished Korea off :D Nevertheless, this conspiracy theory is quite a rampant thought around here. Did anyone know that the wise president of Fifa (I think it's the wise) is a Korean...

Didn't know that. Are you sure?
Well the MAIN reason why I support Italy is because I'm Italian ;)
ANd Vieri is an excellent striker. I don't know wot Italy would do without him.
Yeh he was born in Australia!

Woah, I never knew you were Italian. You remind me of Vieri :D.
It's kind of funny, apparently, he was a brilliant cricketer, and could have played for the Australian cricket team.

Crap side huh? Who's still in it?

Ok, you think the Fifa Rankings Mean Anything?
USA Doesn't deserve to be near the top 10.
They can't beat any top class european teams, the only reason they are that high is because they beat teams like Fiji and get points.
Fifa Rankings are so useless it's not funny, because if they were true, Ireland would probably be 2nd or 3rd
USA made top 8, during world cup play. Amazing? No where near top 10?
Ireland? 2nd or 3rd? Try double digits :D
I'm sorry, but that's just funny.

I live in a Korean neighborhood and in every single store window you would see Korean flags. People would wear the flags as capes, wear those red shirts, stick flags on traffic lights, staple mini flags to their hats, cover their cars in flags, etc.
So I went to the main part of town after Korea lost and my friend would yell (very quietly) how Germany beat them and then hide for fear of being beat up. :D
Friends of mine who never once mentioned soccer before are all of the sudden the biggest soccer fans ever...
Crazy ball with the kicking and stuff...
