I don't think anyone here closely follows Hollywood (correct me if I'm wrong) so I thought this would be a nice place to just dump random news that others may find interesting such as people being cast for movies, new movies being made and all that jazz.
This doesn't include stuff like trailers and reviews though, can make a separate thread for that.
Some tidbits,

Angela Basset joins the Green Lantern movie as Amanda Waller. For those who don't know who Ms. Waller is, she is the head of the Suicide Squad and currently Checkmate, I'm almost certain that does nothing to help most people.

Paul W.S Anderson to direct a 3D Buck Rogers. I believe Mr. Anderson was responsible for the Resident Evil movies so make of that what you will.

A 3D CGI Popeye film, how many people will see a Popeye movie?

Chris Evans will get behind the shield and become the next Iron Man
There you go, for now.

Looks like Will Smith has signed on to do 2 ID sequels.
Will Smith has apparently signed up to star in not one but two sequels to Independence Day.
The 1996 alien invasion movie was a box office smash and producers/writers Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, who also directed, reportedly wrote a follow up some time ago, but decided they weren't ready to revisit the story.
Now IESB.net is reporting that Will has signed up to star in two sequels and that Fox is planning to film the movies back-to-back, with shooting due to start as early as 2011.
The original Independence Day - about aliens attacking the world, only to be saved by the unlikely team of a maverick airforce pilot, a wacky scientist and the President - also starred Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum.
It took a total of 817,400,891 dollars at the worldwide box office

Nice...though since the Matrix I'm wary of back to back sequels.
WTF?! 2 sequels to a 15 year old blockbuster? I hate this idea.

The Green Lantern suit is going to be entirely CGI. During filming Reynolds is wearing a grey suit with tracking led lights.

This reminds me of the whole debacle in the early 90s between Licence to Kill and GoldenEye. I just hope everything can get sorted out before Daniel Craig decides its not worth it anymore. I want at least one more good Bond movie out of him before they switch to someone else.

Pixar announces Monster,Inc 2 for 2012 and another new film, Brave. 2012
Guess Pixar needs to get movies out before our eventual doom.
FFS!
Paramount Pictures is jumping into the 3D fray. The studio will convert the M. Night Shyamalan-directed The Last Airbender into 3D, using Stereo D, the company that worked on James Cameron's Avatar. Release date will remain July 2. Get used to those 3D glasses, is the message, here, I guess. Shyamalan is pretty particular about his movies, so he must be sold on the conversion process. I still need to see more conversions to be sold on them. I attended the Tribeca Festival premiere of Shrek Forever After, the DreamWorks Animation film that was conceived in 3D. I found the 3D aspects of the film to be absolutely thrilling. It absolutely enhanced the razor sharp computer animation. 3D conversions have a lot to live up to, but at the same time, the enhancement to the box office revenues of Clash of the Titans was undeniable. Insiders say the conversion will cost Paramount between $5 million to $10 million, which is likely money that will be recouped, at an extra 3 bucks a ticket.

Marvel Studios is currently taking meetings with writers and directors to work on small scale movies based on some of their third tier characters. The movies would cost in the range of 20 to 40 million dollars (very small when we're talking studio films) and would allow them to take risks with less obvious characters and with interesting talent.

I don't like this but eh

Yeah I agree with Earl. It's not like I don't like the third tier characters from the Marvel universe, but it's just a gamble that doesn't seem like it will pay off.
Their cameos and shit like that would be cool, but I kinda see it flopping.

What about Blade? Just depends who they have working on it.
I'm still waiting for Edgar Wright's Ant-Man. Pushed back to 2012...if it happens at all.

LOS ANGELES (May 4, 2010) __ "Kick-Ass" director Matthew Vaughn will helm X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, a new chapter in Twentieth Century Fox's blockbuster series of films based on the Marvel Comics.
X-MEN: FIRST CLASS begins production this summer for a June 3, 2011 release. Bryan Singer, who conceived the story for FIRST CLASS and directed the original "X-Men" and its sequel "X2," is producing along with Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg.
"I've been a fan of Matthew's since LAYER CAKE," said Singer. "He has a deft hand with multiple characters and storylines, and a great love of the X-Men universe. I feel the combination of this story and his vision will make for an exciting and original X-Men film."
Added Twentieth Century Fox president of production, Emma Watts: “X-Men: First Class presents an exciting opportunity to further explore the history and relationships of these beloved characters. Matthew's combination of talent, verve and vision is perfectly suited to the task.”
X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, following the classic Marvel mythology, charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known.
PErsonally, I think that is such a tiny timetable for a movie. Basically, a year from announcement to release.

A bit disappointed by this. Vaughn's a great director and liked that every one of his movies have been completely different in genre and tone. And screw Singer. He left X-Men to go make a bland Superman movie. Shouldn't be allowed back.

I just discovered that the girl who played Mary Corleone in The Godfather Part III has directed Lost in Translation and The Virgin Suicides, two movies I (really) liked. :)
