Seeing as GT has gotten RPG heavy lately, figured should go all out and talk let's start making lists.

So what are your top 5 RPGS?

Doesn't have to be in any order, just pick your top 5. Put as much explanation into this as you want. Which can be none-a lot I suppose.

A short list seeing how I haven't completed many,

Skies of Arcadia, I don't know why but it was one of the few RPGs to capture my attention. I realize that is does pretty much everything a normal RPG does, but I just loved the setting and the characters.

Pokemon, its an addiction, there's no way around it, and I will catch em all again.

Paper Mario/Mario and Luigi, I'll put them here not to clutter the list. I love Mario, these games are fairly fun RPGs and not too complex so I enjoy them.

Baten Kaitos, I didn't think a card RPG would hold my attention but it really did. With such a fun and fast battle system that kept you thinking, an interesting dynamic plotwise.

Semi-RPGs like Borderlands and Mass Effect I guess.

And here are my Top 5 in no particular order with some random song from each game:

Chrono Trigger:

Man this game... The story was superb, the battle system was so much fun with the different attack combos and stuff, and traveling through time was awesome. Then when I found out about all the different endings... God was so sold on this game.

Valkyrie Profile:

This is one of the deepest RPGs ever made in terms of battle systems. I have so much love for the battles in this game it's totally retarded. Also the story was absolutely amazing in ways you don't understand.
<object width="320" height="265"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/rhXbFiDGHhk&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xcc2550&color2=0xe87a9f"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/rhXbFiDGHhk&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xcc2550&color2=0xe87a9f" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="320" height="265"></embed></object>

How amazing is that battle theme?

Xenogears:

I actually have so much love for this game, and also some serious hate. The battle system was awesome, love the chain attacks, love the way opening new attacks worked, love the gear fights. The game was so long, and there was so much story to work through and understand, I mean you didn't even get to the last area until you were like level 80 and you spend another like 8 hours in the final dungeon. Perhaps one of the greatest RPG stories ever... My big issue was... The out of battle graphics. Dungeons, world maps, awful. I normally don't care, and know this was released fairly early in the PSX days, but never have I had a game with graphics that were so bad they actually hindered my progression for some time. Despite that, I still love this game.

<object width="320" height="265"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/YtMAQXDhg9Y&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xcc2550&color2=0xe87a9f"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/YtMAQXDhg9Y&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xcc2550&color2=0xe87a9f" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="320" height="265"></embed></object>

Final Fantasy Tactics:

I actually didn't end up playing this game until my senior year of high school. I'm sorta glad, because doubt I would have enjoyed it as a kid, and probably wouldn't have understood it too much. Not too much to say about this game I think that hasn't been said, but amazing battles, one of the harder RPGs I've ever played, job systems, a great story if you're into the kind of story it offered, and the music was awesome! This game, just awesome.

<object width="320" height="265"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KzFooLMKYn0&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xcc2550&color2=0xe87a9f"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KzFooLMKYn0&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xcc2550&color2=0xe87a9f" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="320" height="265"></embed></object>

Disgaea:

This game... First of all it's probably one of the funniest games I've played. It had just great battles, a lot of fun systems in the game, and jeezus the item world. I still haven't finished this game really, and fire it up occasionally to make more progression. That's how long this game is. Also it ended up having the cutest story ever. Also 3 cheers for mid-boss. The happiest day ever was the day this game was put on the DS because I got it, beat it, and rebuilt my progress in the PS2 version. I play Disgaea when traveling so much.

Ok I'm going to list 6 of them, because I can do that.

Terranigma:

This game is probably not very well known. Perhaps with the popularity of emulating games from the SNES days it is though. Just to say, Terranigma is so much fun. Truly some of the most fun I've ever had was this game. Sort of the best example the SNES has of an action RPG, with maybe Seiken Densetsu behind it. Legend of Gaia you tried so hard.

5. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

I actually spent the majority of my time playing this game on the original Xbox, without any mods or anything. I played this game almost non-stop for weeks...and during that entire time I never did a single part of the main quest. The only thing I did was explore the world, do house/guild quests, and build up my character.

4. Final Fantasy Tactics

Played this Sophomore year of high school I think...borrowed it and a PS1 from moogle. It was the first 'tactical' rpg I'd ever played. The story was just epic, and it was awesome being able to switch up my characters jobs. Although I like the GBA ones, they just never felt the same. I wanted my main dude to be a kick ass monk like Ramza.

3. Xenosaga

I wish I could get around to finding/buying the sequels to this game. The story was awesome, the characters were awesome (especially Ziggy), and the battle system was really fun.

2. Disgaea: Hour of Darkness

Hilarious game, and everything is just so ridiculously over the top. I mean, being able to level up your guys to 9999, -and- being able to level up your weapons. Not to mention several levels to every class. It's a grinders dream.

1. Dragon Warrior III

One thing that really made this game for me was being able to hire your party members at the tavern in the beginning, give them a name, and choose their class - then have them follow you around on the map.

Not sure about a top 5, but I'll list a few that I consistently remember fondly.

Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Xenogears
FF6-12.. Yeah I know, I've enjoyed them all.
Legend of Legaia
Legend of Dragoon (although I attempted to replay it a few months ago, it has aged terribly)
Vagrant Story
Suikoden 1,2, and 3

Err, Legend of Dragoon was always terrible.

Hm.

1. Pokemon. I forget which one I have for the DS, because I haven't played it in forever on account of me being stuck, but I enjoy it.
2. FF8
3. Star Ocean 3 (Still haven't played 4)
4. Super Mario RPG
5. Mass Effect 2

Hmm...just recently gotten back into RPGs. Let's see if I can pull some out of my memory...in no particular order, because these are too hard to rank.

Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy Tactics
Golden Sun
Super Mario RPG
Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga

Bowser's Inside Story
Chrono series (since it's not fair for me to compare the two)
FF9
Suikoden series (although I felt III was kind of a dud and I never played V)
Pokemon G/S were my favorites, but the series in general is great

Runner ups!

Grandia (I've only finished the first one though)
Kingdom Hearts II
I want to put Skies of Arcadia in the list but I never finished it :(
Dragon Warrior (Of the first two I liked the first better tbh)

Teuthida

Pokemon Red/Blue
Golden Sun
Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis

Pokemon
Elder Scrolls: Morrowind

BlueFire

Top 5 is difficult, I guess. But I haven't really played that many RPGs.

I'd probably pick Chrono Cross over Trigger, but Chrono Trigger is still dear to my heart.
Either FF9 or FF6
Suikoden II (Luca Blight.. woo!)
Pokemon definitely... Red/Blue, Gold/Silver, Diamond/Pearl were the only generations I've played, though. I think my favorite is Gold/Silver
Super Mario RPG!

I'll probably throw in Star Ocean 3 as a runner-up. The story was awful and the voice acting was even worse, but shit, that game probably has an amazingly fun battle system!

Games I wish I finished playing:
Vagrant Story
Xenogears
Ogre Battle 64
Golden Sun
Seiken Densetsu 3

Games I wish I played:
Valkyrie Profile
Xenosaga (can anybody let me know what's up with the Nietzsche subtitles?)
Skies of Arcadia

Acebot44

Chrono Cross
Legend of Legaia
Legend of Dragoon
Phantasy Star Online
Pokemon
Elder Scrolls: Morrowind
Knights of the Old Republic

Games I wish I finished playing:

Xenogears
Ogre Battle 64
Golden Sun
Seiken Densetsu 3

Games I wish I played:
Valkyrie Profile
Xenosaga (can anybody let me know what's up with the Nietzsche subtitles?)
Skies of Arcadia

You never finished Vagrant Story? You went on and on about it, I thought you had!

I have Xenogears and Xenosaga (the first two episodes at any rate), you know you're always free to borrow then.

I could have sworn you finished Ogre Battle too.
