View Full Version : Holy Cows Spiderman 4 Canned, Raimi/Maguire Quit

So latest word is that Raimi has quit directorial duties on Spiderman 4 since he could not film a movie in the time that Sony wanted so now Maguire and the cast is out, and Sony will focus on a reboot in 2012.

http://www.deadline.com/hollywood/urgent-spider-man-4-scrapped-as-is-raimi-and-cast-out-franchise-reboot-planned/

Mike Fleming and I have just confirmed that Sony Pictures decided today to reboot the Spider-Man franchise after franchise director Sam Raimi pulled out of Spider-Man 4 because he felt he couldn't make its summer release date and keep the film's creative integrity. This means that Raimi and the cast including star Tobey Maguire are out. There will be no Spider-Man 4. Instead, Mike Fleming is told, the studio will focus on a Summer 2012 reboot from a script by Jamie Vanderbilt with a new director and a new cast. All this took place today at meeting on the lot today.

Here's some details on what Spiderman 4 would have been and what let's call it the Amazing SPiderman will be.

Spider-Man 4:
-Peter and MJ have a baby
-The villains would have been the Vulture (apparently the new editor of the Daily Bugle?), the Black Cat (later retooled into the "Vulturess" at the studio's request), and possibly a third villain
-Script was even worse than Spider-Man 3's
-Anne Hathaway was gone from the project late last year (which is probably what spurned Sony into changing Black Cat into Vulturess)

I don't know if ever posted news on the Vulturess on the forum, but I thought that was a terrible idea when it was leaked a couple of months ago. I never get the need to create characters (Especially major ones) in a series that has so many villains, secondary characters to pull from.

The baby didn't help Superman Returns and it wouldn't have helped this movie.

Reboot:
-Apparently much better than the SM4 script
-Already finished, completed at the same time as SM4 as a contingency plan in case Raimi walked
-Described as more TDK than Spider-Man, with none of the "fluff" (whatever that may mean)
-The reboot is the first part in a new trilogy
No one is going to say the movie they are currently filming is much worse than the one they canned so that's just dumb.

And I REALLY REALLY hope people get the essence of Spider-man this is like the 3rd reference I've seen to it being darker, and I just don't like it. Spiderman isn't dark, hell the guy wears red and blue, don't turn him into Batman because it did so well.

Also on a slightly related note, some of you may have known that James Cameron originally had a treatment for Spiderman way back in the early 90s before the series got tangled in legal mess, I'm not sure what ever happened to it, but I know that some of it was absolved into the Raimi films such as organic webbing.

Teuthida

Darker? No fluff? Spider-man is basically a young Woody Allen with spider powers.

I don't get it. Every time a studio executive makes changes the movie suffers. They never learn.

Well, I guess i should clarify. I'm in favor of "tasteful" CGI. I guess the technology is getting better, so this should be easier to do, but so many times CGI is overused when a puppet or something could have been more interesting.

Yeah that's because a lot of media outlets were playing off that article.

Lol.

Fuck though, if any one of those twilight pussies makes it into spiderman I wont go see it.

I'm hoping for an entirely new cast, hoping some young actor starts his career off this movie or something. Maybe a new actress for Mary Jane. Hopefully later on, some nice beefy dude to play venom, you know someone who isn't fucking topher grace? Amirite?

So seems like the top two choices so far are Pattinson or Efron, and both would be terrible choices IMO.

So it seems like sony is willing to take a gamble and get the female population to see their movie, but at the same time alienate the huge male audience that saw the first three movies.

Agree or disagree -- A movie franchise can not be successfully rebooted within a decade of its last reboot if that one was very popular.

I will disagree to an extent since Spiderman 3 wasn't well received, do I think it needed a reboot, not exactly, but better than it heading into Batman and Robin territory.

I was gonna use Batman and Robin/Begins as an example, but everyone hated Batman and Robin.

Whatever I'm super pumped. I don't know if you guys remember clearly or not, but Spiderman 1 wasn't that great either. I think the reason people liked it was because it was the first decently done super hero movie. Even though it still wasn't that great. Spidey 2 was tight, but that was it.

I might actually like SP1 more than 2. Even after having recently seen them again.

3 I haven't seen since I did in the cinema. The only scene worth remembering was the one in the beginning where he's fighting the Green Goblin and they're basically both flying in narrow alleys.

I enjoyed the trailer, only thing that disappointed me was no footage of the lizard!

Also, I wonder if they are going to skip over the whole 'spider-man doesn't stop a criminal and he kills uncle ben' part of the story?

I mean, that's kind of critical to spider-man's origins, but at the same time I don't really want a significant part of the movie dedicated to it, since that already happened in the other one.

I think they're going to have a tough time doing a 2nd origin story and also making it feel different from the first.

3/4 of the trailer is so stupid. We've seen all this a few years ago.

The last 1/4 can make the movie worthwile. It's like a mix of Aliens vs Predator (playing as an Alien) and Mirror's Edge.
Only here you can't control it yourself. Hm... I guess it's not as good then. :)

For some reason Hollywood has an obsession with having all characters maintain a human mouth. The biggest examples of this are Optimus Prime's awful CGI face in the movies, and worse, Snake Eyes...

The point of the reboot is to go dark, right?

Spidey 1 and 2 absolutely fell apart in the CGI department and are hilariously bad. But the "comic feel" is pretty good. It seems like the best Marvel movies are the ones injected with tons of humor: Ironman was hilarious, The Avengers movie coming out looks to be hilarious.

I've said it like 14 times on this very forum, but the reason why Batman Begins and the Dark Knight are both so good is because they picked pretty "realistic" villains and they DON'T SHOW A TON OF FIGHTING. There's a lot of regular, non-CGI stunts in the Dark Knight. The whole bank scene at the beginning is brilliant cinematography and will look just as good in 50 years as it does today. We will see how Nolan handles Catwoman...but different thread.

Anyway, I don't understand why we don't go with The Kingpin. Dark, logical, human...and a serious foil in the Spidey universe. The problem with Spiderman is the villains are hugely CGI dependent. But...Hellboy was great and has held up well. I think they used a lot of body suites and real props. I love that movie.

Also, a dark Spiderman reboot beckons a dark symbiote story arc. Where is the Carnage that kills people left and right. Put that guy on screen.

I still have mixed feelings about this reboot.

KillerGremlin
12-09-2011, 04:37 PM
Hell, as a long time Spidey fan I was really happy with Norman Osborn being the main villain. William Dafoe is a little too Shakespeare and not quite dark enough to be Osborn, IN MY OPINION, but the movie is light-humored and has levity.

A reboot with Osborn as a villain would work, but who wants to see that again.

I still think you gotta go Kingpin. Tombstone, Hammerhead, the Rhino, and Shocker, are all classic Spider-Man villains and have enough reality to ground them like the Nolan choices that make the Batman movies work.

Throw in the Kingpin as the leader planning some dirty crime, add in one of the above baddies, and I think you could make a really enjoyable movie.

Here's the thing though....Spider-Man is a jokester and the comics are full of levity. Spidey always has inner-monologues. I feel like Spider-Man 1 and 2 both captures some of the levity. I was okay with Tobey Maguire being Peter Parker. Ultimate Spider-Man really appeals to the younger generation...but it doesn't read a whole lot darker. If anything, the original Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1 was much darker towards the middle and end of the run. I'm not up to date on any comics....because there's too much shit to follow, too many reboots, special events. Bleh. It's like a full time job trying to keep up with all the stupid comics these days.
