This seems like DC's version of Marvel's Ultimate universe.

DC announced today "DC:Earth One" a brand new continuity for the DC Universe that will begin with Superman and Batman. It will be Trade Paperback format only and will be released twice a year. Superman will be written by JMS and Batman will be written by Geoff Johns. More at the link.

Its an interesting idea, but who isn't familiar with Batman and Superman's origins at this point.

That was said about Spiderman when the Ultimate universe started up and look how well that has turned out.

And didn't DC try to do the other universe thing with All-Star?

I always thought that's what All-Stars Superman/Batman was intended to be, but Superman turned into an Elseworld tale of sort, and Batman... welll I think Frank Miller just wanted to see how far he could push the character.

The good thing about this though,
It only goes out twice a year, which may make it a long wait, but it will be a full length trade. According to an interview, north of 100 pages so I assume you get full stories.

And I don't think Johns has done Batman yet.

God dammit I like johns work on superman :/

This is awesome news Ive been waiting for something like this since Marvel did the ultimate line.

I wish it would be ongoing though, as opposed to twice a year trades.

We're already in the middle of a Superman retelling with Origins.

Someone should just force Frank Miller and Jim Lee to make more All-Star Batman. Alfred is already a badass in that book. The marine aspect reminds me of Batwoman's origin....which we're also in the middle of.

Would like one of these for a lesser known character. Like Blue Beetle Ted Kord. That would be a cool book.

Its only retelling the origins of Superman, though; nothing later. If someone wanted to jump into Superman comics then, yeah, they could easily start with Secret Origins, but what about afterward? Its also mostly stuck with having to keep in line with what's gone before, what's going on now, and what might be planned for the future.

The current DCU is almost impossible to get into without back-research and spending way too much money on past trades in getting caught up. And if someone doesn't really know how things are organized regarding storylines, it can definitely be overwhelming trying to figure out which books you should by if you just want to follow Batman or Superman or Green Lantern, etc.

I think this is an excellent idea. So long as they market it right and label it clearly enough it could very easily be a jump-on point for people who have always wanted to read the Batman or Superman comics but have been to overwhelmed to try to figure out where to start.
