This isn't a thread to say which game is better or anything of the sorts.

Just wanted to see where GT told.

On last week's GameTrailers TV, Reggie declared that he believed new Super Mario Bros Wii will outsell Modern Warfare 2 during the holiday season. (I originally thought he meant combined, but it seemed like he meant the 360 version)

http://gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2009/11/06/news-Nintendo_2700_s-Reggie-Bets-On-New-Super-Mario-Bros.-Wii-Outselling-Modern-Warfare-2-On-360.aspx

Now just for historical reasons, this is the numbers from 2 years ago when Galaxy went head to head with the original Modern Warfare.

November 2007 Top 10 Video Games Rank # Units
360 CALL OF DUTY 4: MODERN WARFARE ACTIVISION (CORP) NOV 2007 MATURE (M) 1 1.57 million
WII SUPER MARIO GALAXY NINTENDO OF AMERICA NOV 2007 EVERYONE (E) 2 1.12 million
PS3 CALL OF DUTY 4: MODERN WARFARE ACTIVISION (CORP) NOV 2007 MATURE (M) 7 444K

And the following Dec,

Top 10 SW Sales
360 CALL OF DUTY 4: MODERN WARFARE ACTIVISION (CORP) NOV 2007 MATURE (M) *1 1.47 million
WII SUPER MARIO GALAXY NINTENDO OF AMERICA NOV 2007 EVERYONE (E) 2 1.40 million

So it was fairly close back then, but of course CoD MW for 360 won out.

In the two years that have passed, Modern Warfare's popularity has increased greatly, and will of course sell like gangbusters out of the gate.

Mario always does well, but will being 2D... help or hinder sales. Also, why the 4 player co-op help to sell more copies of the game... in a Wii Sports sort of way.

So Mario vs Modern Warfare 2... the holiday juggernaunt, who wins?

MW 2. Too much hype around it. Plus its new features and MP have been showcased to death.

I think MW2 will outsell it.

One big reason is I think they really screwed up naming the new mario brothers game. A lot of people think it's a port of the DS version.

I somehow don't see 2D Mario being nearly as popular as a 3D. It seems more like an sidekick than a new Mario game. That being said, I enjoyed New SMB way more than Galaxy.

As for MW2, nothing can stop it.

Oh no doubt about it, MW 2 will sell like gangbusters.
But I'm thinking it may be like other big juggernaunts this gen which is heavily front loaded and falls off.

Yeah, Nintendo is terrible with marketing this generation.
Most people either think the game is some weird hybrid party game with single player tacked on or a port of the DS game.

Its hard to gauge but ALL 2D Mario games have outsold 3D Mario games.
If I'm not mistaken Super Mario 64 DS has been outsold by new Super Mario Bros DS. So I think 2D Marios are more popular, but I do feel like the 3D games are the main series now.

And yeah nothing can stop MW 2 because nothing has tried. Like every major release got moved into next year. :lolz:

I think a 2D Mario might sell better than 3D. Everybody can join in on the fun, where as some people just don't 'get' 3D Mario.

That being said, I have no idea. I never thought of picking up NSMBW until recently, when stuff started to look really fun. I don't care about MW2. I don't know how big it is.

From the trends, it looks as though MW2 will have the edge. The fact that SMB Wii is 2D could affect this a bit, but there's no way to measure its impact until after the fact. I'm really looking forward to SMB Wii because of its connections to the older Mario games..

Modern Warfare 2 will be the top selling game November-December. No question.

I feel like just naming it "Super Mario Bros. 4" would have been a good title.

I feel like just naming it "Super Mario Bros. 4" would have been a good title.

As simple as that would be, I think the problem is that Super Mario World was branded with Super Mario Bros 4 in Japan.

And really with World and new Super Mario Bros DS, I don't think it would have been four either.

On the bright side, I think the commercials look pretty damn awesome.

Yeah those are ok. I wonder how many retro-gamers it will lure in.

The year isn't over yet... But ok, what Reggie said was stupid.

I'm very surprised it wasn't much closer though. I though NSMB Wii would sell at least 3 million or more.

MW2 ugh... That game.

Remember that the year isn't over yet. :) MW2 is a hardcore game, I suppose hardcore gamers tend to buy their games fast. NSMBW is also a casual game, casual gamers are not in a hurry. Many might wait for Christmas.

Not that I care much about the coming months. I'm pretty sure NSMBW will end up with more sales than MW2 in a few years.

I don't think people will buy 2 million copies in the next 2 weeks, while Call of Duty 4-2 doesn't sell any.

I don't know if this matters to the topic.

http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=6540&mp=1

Basically saying that NSMBWii beat MW2 to 10 million on a single console. The overall in terms of MW2 being on multiple platforms is still to be determined.
