Rockstar Games Announces Grand Theft Auto: Vice City; Next Installment of Grand Theft Auto Franchise To Hit Streets in October

5/21/2002 8:33:00 AM

NEW YORK, May 21, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Rockstar Games, the world-renowned publishing division of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (TTWO) , proudly announces Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the follow-up to the global blockbuster title Grand Theft Auto 3.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is the latest installment in the gaming franchise that has exceeded 11 million units in total sales to-date. It will be available exclusively for PlayStation(R)2 and is expected to hit retail shelves in the United States on October 22nd.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City will surpass the unprecedented gameplay, cinematic graphics and immersive audio experience that gamers associate with Grand Theft Auto 3, which was released in October 2001 and has rapidly become the fastest selling, highest grossing game for PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system to-date, with global sales exceeding 6 million units. Rockstar Games will release additional information about the game's content in July, but the following details are clear: It's an entirely new game set in the '80s, the location is Vice City, and the vibe is glamour, power and corruption...

Sam Houser, the executive producer of the Grand Theft Auto franchise and president of Rockstar Games, commented, "The success of Grand Theft Auto 3 has made us very proud, but it has also motivated us enormously. The work currently being done by our development and production teams in Edinburgh and New York is going to surpass the efforts of last year, as we set our sights on making an even more revolutionary gaming experience. This will be reflected in the size of the game, the scope of the gameplay, the extent of the gameplayer's freedom, the quality of production value and the all-important sense of style."

Les Benzies, the producer of Grand Theft Auto games, noted, "Although it may appear to be a challenge to develop a game superior to Grand Theft Auto 3, our progress to date on Vice City makes me highly confident that we can deliver a truly innovative game."

Kelly Sumner, Take-Two Interactive Software's Chief Executive Officer added, "Grand Theft Auto 3 has become the "must-have" title for PlayStation(R)2 and is appropriately regarded as a landmark in interactive entertainment. We are delighted with the plans for Vice City, and are totally committed to supporting Rockstar's creative efforts and investing in the development and marketing approach that made Grand Theft Auto 3 such a tremendous success."

SVEEEET!

So this'll be a whole new game and not like a "GTA3 expansion" kinda thing like they were talking about before?

And october 22nd? That seems a bit early... meh... I wonder if it will have any kind of 2 player or online play... will the graphics be much better than before? Will the places be split into islands again? Will there actually be other people getting on and off the subway and stuff this time? I WANNA KNOW AAHHH *explodes*

I knew it wouldn't be too long before we got the next installment.

Same here, but I was thinking that is would be late Novemeber/ early December.

And maybe there will not be too much a graphical advance. I mean, it is pretty quick that they are making this... Maybe there are using same engine/graphics... but it does say that it will "surpass the unprecedented gameplay, cinematic graphics and immersive audio experience that gamers associate with Grand Theft Auto 3"... So I guess anything is possible.

It's entirely possible that they were working on 'Vice City' at the same time they were working on GTA3. Chances are, as they neared the end of GTA3's design/construction phases, they realized they'd have a massive hit on their hands, and so started bracing for the next installment.

Case in point, 'GTA: Vice City' was probably in the works before GTA3 even released, giving them a few extra months (or so) of working time. It's even possible that this 80's set was a concept design for GTA3 which ended up being scratched -- saving Take-Two all that much more time in conceptual design stages.

Just the same... This rules. I can't wait for this next GTA. Better yet, it's a PS2 exclusive, shunning all those poor suckers with GameCube's and Xboxes. *middle finger smiley*

Yeah. You may be right. I can't wait for this game to come out. The 80's were a funny decade in this world, and it will be cool to see the styles of clothes that people are wearing on the street. :p

Yeah, and what people say as you walk down the street, and what goofy stereotypes they put in the game :D

haha... Yeah. I hope they say some weird stuff from the 80's... Because you know, there was probably some weird stuff they said back then... I don't know what, though... because I was born in 86....

I hope that the pedestrians are more interactive... Like they can knock you over by mistake or something.

It would be cool if they'd have random other crimes happening, and the cops would rush to the scene... gang shootings, random shootings, etc... or cops chasing the other carjackers or people who steal people's money...

Or being smart enough to realize that sometimes you're acting in self-defense... it's annoying if you're running in some gang area and some guy starts shooting at you and cops do nothing... then you pull out your gun and shoot back, and then the cops chase after YOU...

Yeah. I agree. I hated it when I would punch three or four people randomly, and then they would all attack me... then I would shoot them all up... then I would get arrested! Makes no sense!

:D

But yeah. You're right, DH. The police should be interactive with the surroundings.. not just your character.

heh heh...

Like that time where you gotta save the old man from the Columbians...and there's like 20 guys firing Uzi's at you, and the Cops do nothing...

heh heh...
