Welcome to the very first GT Let's Play! (Cheesy, badly Photoshopped logo included!)

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b331/scarz0ftime/letsplay.jpg

In our plentiful random discussions, BaB and I have discovered that we both have not completed Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past!

http://memles.files.wordpress.com/2007/01/legend_of_zelda_a_link_to_the_past_snes_screenshot1.jpg

Unacceptable! SO.

We decided that we would play through, side-by-side, and put down our triumphs and our struggles (and possibly show you them) and we'll see if we can finally finish this old classic.

INSTRUCTIONS

- Obviously, you'll need a copy of the game! Whether it be the original SNES cart,
the Wii VC version, or the GBA version. If you own a copy of the game, then emulation
is always an option since you can provide screen caps of your journey if you choose.
(REMINDER: ROMs are illegal if you do not own the game so PLEASE do not emulate
unless you own the game you're emulating!)
- Make notes of anything and everything! Part of the fun of Zelda games is their tendencies
to be linear and non-linear at the same time. So if you took the extra step to get a heart
piece or make yourself rich by killing baddies, or whatever it wouldn't hurt to show how
your playthrough was unique for you!
- GT's servers can only handle so much (and this is me assuming because I don't really know),
so if you're going to use attachments, please use them sparingly. If you want to upload a lot
of pics, try using a Photobucket account or something, and to lower the quality or size of the
picture to make the pages load faster if possible.
- I'm going to try making notes throughout playtime about how my runthrough went, since it'll be
good to not jump ahead of everyone else. I think this effort would work much better if we all posted
our collective summaries at the end of the week to compare. But to each their own, I can't order anyone
around.
- This is not a race. I'm trying to give enough time for everyone to move at their own pace, and
also give time for other things as well. We all have social lives (except for BaB).
- Have fun! This is a classic that should be enjoyed as much as possible for years to come!

Join in if you like, I believe Blue is getting in on it as well. We start Monday!

Also leave some questions if you like. We're kinda making this up as we go.

By Monday the 17th you should have finished fighting Agahnim and entered the Dark World!
By Monday the 24th you should have finished getting the fourth crystal in the Dark World!
By Monday the 31st you should have completed the game! And if you have congratulations! You've beaten one of the best games of all time!

I dig the logo.

And would also like to get Acebot and Swan in on this since they have never completed a Zelda game.

Really guys? Really?

As I recall BaB never beat Link's Awakening, an even better Zelda game than A Link to the Past.

What I don't get is how you guys have all played Twilight Princess or Wind Waker but you missed out on like the best Zelda games, period.

2D Zelda > 3D Zelda
With the N64 titles *perhaps* being the only exception.

KillerGremlin

Seriously, for a "Nintendo forum" you all fail miserably.

magus113
08-06-2009, 05:50 PM
I've played Link to the Past, but never completed. And LA would be a good one to do as well. I enjoyed that one highly.

BreakABone
08-06-2009, 05:56 PM
Well one the "Nintendo" label on the forum... should probably be dropped. We are hardly a gaming forum.

And the bulk of the talk is generally directed to the 360 at this point.

And second, I can't speak for Munk, but I'm not a Zelda fan... nor a Metroid fan... I've always said I'm not a Nintendo fan, but a Mario fan.

The n64 and GCN saw fewer Mario games so I passed the time by playing some of Nintendo's other franchises.

I think Wind Waker had extraordinary artwork, and TP was... because it was really a launch title for the Wii so yeah.

I've gotten through some of Ocarina of Time, but I don't know it just really doesn't connect with me the same way it connects with everyone else it seems.

KillerGremlin

Man...but 2D Zelda....some of the best dungeons, and the most challenging puzzles, but simple and fun gameplay....A Link to the Past was pretty epic, although it is not my favorite 2D Zelda title. Maybe I am biased from my nostalgia, but nothing resonated for me quite like beating Link's Awakening DX.

Wind Waker was a great game, don't get me wrong...it was exceptional. It's not like I hate 3D Zelda, I love 3D Zelda.

I disagree, I think OOT is the Best Zelda game ever...

But, I might actually do this with you guys we will see, I too have never completed a link to the Past, I own the game boy advance version, and I remember I got well into it but I just didnt complete it...I think I got stuck somewhere and I hate to use guides so I just eventually lost interest.

That being said I have completed Link's Awakening.

BaB and I are hoping to try and finish this in three weeks. My fall semester starts in a few weeks as well. So no worries!

When every circumstance of my life is factored in... Quality, Timing, Nostalgia, Inserts (such a pretty map)...
LttP = Greatest Zelda game ever.
I could beat it in one sitting.

You kids disappoint me.
This has been such a drag.

P.S. Magus, get my bowler off your head.

I don't think I'm in on this one. I already beat the game at least twice (SNES + AGB).
I also like to play Zelda games by myself or maybe with my brother... I don't want to type about it online.

I never finished the first (halfway through) and second (last boss) Zelda. I own them for AGB now, so if we're going to that one day, I'm in.
The other Zelda game I never beat is Phantom Hourglass. I guess I will, I just need to find out where I am and what to do next.

I'm pretty sure that we can do more Zelda games in the future, but this is pretty much reserved for classics. And more are going to appeal to different people I'm sure. If we did a GT Let's Play of Chrono Trigger I know Blue would be all over it.

I may be into this. We have the SNES at our new studio with a copy of LttP. I've beaten it many times and I really do think it is the best Zelda game ever and possibly my favorite game of all time.

That said, I'm not sure if I can stick to any kind of schedule in terms of playing it unless I take the SNES away from the studio or I just play it instead of recording music.

Remember that if the copy is yours emulation is always an option so you can take it with you wherever you go, like on a jump drive or something. And also I don't think I'm gonna say "YOU CAN'T JOIN IN IF YOU'RE NOT GONNA MEET THE SCHEDULED TIMES". It's for all of GT to enjoy. The journaling and comparison thing is just for fun really.

I got it for WiiVC. Very nice!

I got it when it came out, and I think I'm around halfway through... Well, I know I'm somewhere past the big plot twist midway through that anyone who has ever played a Zelda game knows is coming.

I'll be happy to join in.

Angrist
08-07-2009, 01:39 PM
Link's Awakening has no midway plot twist. Therefore it cannot qualify for best Zelda game ever.

Also, you had to collect musical instruments. What was it, Zelda gayden??? :gay:

magus113
08-07-2009, 02:41 PM
Oracle of Seasons and Ages were fun for the GBC, even though you collected essences. Don't know what that's about.

Hopefully I'll be planning out the schedule for portions of the game to be finished/blogged about for each week. News of that will be coming in soon.

Angrist
08-07-2009, 02:47 PM
I wasn't very serious about the instruments.

I've never played Chrono Trigger, how's that? I think there's a DS port now? I might have to get that one day...

The DS port looked and played pretty much the same. The controls could be kept like the original or updated, and I believe there was something about an extra dungeon, but that is a game that is timeless.

See what I did there?

I wasn't sure if this deserved its own thread, but how awesome is this?

http://zarkseven.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/link-red-lions.jpg?w=225&h=300
At first I thought it was a toy figure, I immediately considered ebay to find it. Then I found out it's actually a paper model!
You can find the ship here:
http://members.home.nl/saarloos/zeldamodels.htm#the%20King%20of%20Red%20Lions

I've known about these models for years now, but this time I think I finally really have to print/make one!

I've tried making paper models before. They're great but just very very time consuming. I have two that I made. One is a Contra diorama and the other is the Shagohod from Metal Gear Solid 3.

The first minutes of ALttP are awesome. I should play them once in a while. The rain, the darkness, the missing uncle... I wish the new Zeldas would have more epic stuff like that. Although I have to say that TP had a lot more than the previous ones (the horse cart, the battle on the bridge...).

Awesome! I think my scheduling is gonna be a little funky too due to taking whatever time I can with work during the day. I also plan to have this and two other games finished before my fall semester starts again. But I'm keeping notes for the logs at the end of each week.

My notes being screen caps that is.

I own a copy of every single variation of the Zelda games except for the Phillips CDI ones. The Wand Of Gamelon and Zelda's Adventure I believe.

I have beaten all of them except for The Oracle Of Ages and The Oracle Of Seasons which are seperate games in their own right but when you complete one you get a password that you can enter when you start the other and you will get a different ending. You should also play through each game for a first time and use the code for the other. If you want to really best it ;)

Oh and I have not finished Zelda II The Adventure Of Link. But all the others I cave completly completed. As in finished, collected everything etcetra.

LttP Is a great game. I will play through it again some time but for now I will follow this thread just to remember it.

And I want to make one of those boats too :D
I made one of the cows from Majoras Mask years ago, like the ones the people in clock town have, little models.

Is the 3rd crystal the one in which you have to keep going outside and use different exits/entrances and stuff to get through the entire dungeon?

That confused the hell out of me, and had to use a guide to eventually find the 3rd entrance/exit, but even then it still was a pain in the arse.

And which was the 5th boss? Was it the moth because you can fight him with your sword or whatever.

It was funny, I saved without magic once, and had to go to a dungeon where needed a medallion... let me tell you, a lot of the enemies in the overworld do not drop magic powder for you to use.

that is indeed the 3rd crystal, I am not going to gamefaqs with this game cus I want to play it as I did back in the day where I didnt even have internet, so Ive been calling friends if i need help and they are mostly like "shit son i dont remember that!".

And I hate double posting but I want to bump this cus I'm done.

Sorry for the picture less finale, got lazy when it came to it, but I pretty much realized I could get the ice of that bastard with one single bombos spell as opposed to 8 freaking fire rod hits, managed to get my half magic use upgrade shortly after, golden sword upgrade and whatnot. I pretty much breezed through the rest of the game afterwards with only turtle rock being a bit of a hassle.

Ganon's tower was a joke I wandered around randomly and next thing i know im fighting aghanim, then I chase after Ganon cus he runs like a pussy, laid the smackdown.... well... I actually fell into the pit once and had to start over, but then I definitelly owned him.

Completed all items, did not get all heart pieces though as I was missing one heart on the meter.

Total games played 18. You guys suck :P

Also, I fell while fighting Ganon as well. And it was a pain in the ass because you had to get back to him, and do the fight again.

Since I wasted some of my potions, I went wild with attacking him and hopinh he didn't kill me first.

I had fallen once and died against Ganon, but then once I got the hang of it, it was a breeze.

I think that's a staple with Zelda games. Ridiculous bosses (sometimes) but the final battle is a cakewalk.

At least in the latest Zeldas they're consistent. ALL the bosses are way too easy. :(

I actually found most of the bosses in LttP easier than their 3D counterparts.

I think the boss battles are better in 3D, but Nintendo has gotten more forgiven.

Some bosses in LttP take off like 3 heart pieces where as most 3D enemies only take off like half.

Man... I wish I had more time for games. I still haven't gotten a chance to go back and play!

Even with the Blue and Red Mail it was a pain. I was so happy to get those items, seriously.

SquEARL and I are trying to figure out what to do the next Let's Play of. I don't think it'll be soon since I've got a full workload of classes this semester, but maybe we can do it in pieces just like this time around.

Any ideas?

Well, if you're the only one with heaps of work to do, we could always do it without you?

Like I said in the previous thread, I'd like to replay Zelda 1 and 2, but they're so dated that I think I'm probably the only one.

Other ideas?

I don't have a problem with joining in. I love to play games and I always try to make whatever time I can for them. It's a good release from the stress of work and school etc.

And also remember, that the games don't have to be Zelda games as well. We're obviously going to be making a completely different thread with this.

Yeah I figured, but I can't really think of games that take a while to replay... maybe a Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger (wich I don't own).
Mario games can be beaten in an hour.

Finally finished Oracle of Ages/Seasons with the true ending. Ganon was actually a little tough until I got the strategy for him down. All in all, a great game though!

Now the only games left to tackle are Adventure of Link and Majora's Mask. Hooray!

Hm I think I'm still playing Oracle of Seasons. Should pick it up, even though I'll probably have no idea what I was doing and where I am supposed to go.

If that ever happens to me I just try and see the items or things that I have and try to use a guide to point me in the right direction and then go from there.

When I started up my copy of Seasons, I was already in a dungeon which was an advantage because the game pretty much steers you in the right direction after you finish one.

The two Oracle games are two of my all time favorite Zelda's.

Age's is my favorite of the two, but somehow I lost the Age's cartridge, or let someone barrow it and didn't get it back. :( This saddens me because I loved the game a lot, and spent a lot of time collecting the rings and everything.

Ah yeah the rings, that's something I'd like to return in another Zelda.
So right now there are... 4 Zelda games on my to play list: MM, TLoZ, TAoL, OoS.

Dammit, this thread made me "dig out" Majora's Mask (well, not really but I won't explain :sneaky: ) to finally beat it while on short term disability (surgery recovery). Never did beat it or even play it much. Came out too late in the 64's life at the time.
