This looks very cool and is a much needed break from the Metroid first person shooter games that have been dominating the Cube/Wii for past few years. It would be sweet to see a new 2D game made, but I guess for that people can revisit their GBA.

It looks like it has some 1st person aspects though. I kinda hope there is less FPS stuff and more 3rd person stuff.
Probably the coolest part of Metroid was watching Samus flip the fuck around.
If team ninja has a big part in this though... I really can't see how they can fuck it up. I mean Nintendo let the guys who handled prime go to town on it and all that so I assume team ninja was like "Oh... Yeah we'll do this right for once."
And they will. The guys who made Ninja Gaiden will not fail me. They can't. Can they?

I think it would be cool to have a 3rd person Samus game in a similar vein to Mario...only you get a gun. This could work great in 3rd person with the Wii, using the Nunchuck to move Samus and the Wii pointer to aim your arm cannon and maybe jump.

despite no longer owning a Wii, i am super psyched for this game for the following reasons
1) it's a new metroid from the director of the 2D classics like Super and Fusion
2) team ninja + samus aran
3) innovative, distinct control scheme
4) the most notable (and perhaps only) case of a company going in a COMPLETELY new direction with one of its strongest franchises. tienen cojones, Nintendo. buenos suerte! who says other franchises can't change up the formula like this? after all, if it flops, you can always revert to what's already proven

On your last point, Nintendo did also turn Metroid into a First-person game so its not like they aren't use to it with this franchise.

This game is going to be great. I have a feeling it'll feel like playing some SNES games back in the day. There's a lot of down time in the FPS Metroid games, but in Metroid: The Other M, it seems as though you're always on the move and killing enemies. It reminds me of Super Metroid in that aspect.

The Metroid Primes got so boring after a while, because the coolest enemies usually didn't respawn.
If that's what you mean...

I suppose that's one way of putting it. In Super Metroid, when you enter a room, all of the enemies are attacking you, or getting in your way based on what they do, and I guess they do respawn in order for this to happen, so yes, that's probably what was good about it. Maybe in Metroid: The Other M they won't respawn, but what I noticed is that it just had more of the old Metroid feel while going through sections of the world. It had that similar flow. In the Metroid Primes, you could kill whatever you wanted whenever, based on the weapons you had, because you could aim anywhere. I guess there were some restrictions, but you could just stand far away and kill something. They were much slower games, but still great nonetheless.

Just as BaB is less and less impressed, the game looks better and better to me.
Then again, I always assumed it would be a Ninja Gaiden game with Metroid. Now it shows more classic Metroid gameplay, which is nice.

I played the E3 demo and walked away disappointed, but not to the point where I'm not interested. I'm cautiously optimistic.
My qualms:
Controls are awkward. When the game took a side-scrolling approach, I had assumed that movement would simply have you moving left and right. You actually still move in 3D space. This requires the use of a control stick. With a D-Pad you aren't just stuck with 8-direction movement, but you're also stuck at two speeds: stand still, and Usain Bolt.
Didn't feel like Prime. Yeah, I realize that it's not supposed to, and that's why this is more of a personal qualm than an objective problem, but there are problems that I foresee with this change. Where Prime may have been lacking in the story aspect (if you didn't read the scan logs), Other M compensates, and that's what thing I'm really excited about. However, who can forget the first time they walked out into Phendrana Drifts? It was incredible then, and it's still remarkable now. Other M's demo didn't have any areas that engrossed the player in such a way. However, neither did Super Metroid or Fusion. So this is more of an observation than a complaint.
When I say that it doesn't feel like Prime, I mean for you to remember what I said about the control. Samus has one speed: lightning. This goes against the calm exploration of the Prime trilogy, and again, some might like that better. This is just a personal issue.
Last, there weren't many Metroid-esque puzzles in the demo. I know there's not much you can place in a demo, but there weren't really many morph ball puzzles, backtracking rewards for new weapons, and such.
Other M's demo makes the game look like it's shaping up to an action space-opera than a standard Metroid game. But hey, I'm all for the dramatic story---that's why I'm still excited for the game. And I'm putting faith in Nintendo in that they'll make sure that the title oozes quality. One thing that everyone will have to get used to (because it won't be changed), is D-Pad control.

Nintendo has been emphasizing a lot of 2D stuff lately. First they did New Super Mario Bros. Wii, then Metroid: Other M, and the next one will be Donkey Kong Country Returns. Maybe they should bring back The Adventure of Link to go with this side scrolling theme haha.

I know it's technically a 3D game. And I have seen how you move through the levels, which is definitely in 3D, but there seems to be a 2D feel to it, like in super smash bros. games. I just mean that they did throwback a bit to the older metroid games, with this one. Which is what they did with New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Also, I know that technically Donkey Kong Country Returns is 3D too, or built that way, but it definitely has a 2D feel to it for the most part.

Donkey Kong Country Returns and SSB is what they usually call 2.5D. You move (mostly) in a 2D plane, but the graphics are 3D.
Metroid Other M looks like a mix of 2.5D and 3D.

I still say they are mixed. It isn't just like one or two reviews.
Though it seems most of the reviews have the same complaint, and I tend to agree with them.
My Wii is acting up so only got to play like 2 hours before it took a dump and now can't get this game working.
Anyhow, the D-pad.. really? Its an odd choice, and it works for most of the game, but there are times when you get into wide open spaces and its just awkward to control with a D-pad. I don't get why didn't just use the analog.
I've been on the record, several times, saying I dislike stories/cinemas in games it breaks up the action too much for my liking. This is no exception. The first I guess 20-30 minutes are very light on gameplay, but it does improve.. or has improved since then. With only a handful of shorter cutscenes spread out.
I will also note, that I don't mind the voice acting, Samus comes off as someone reading her diary or something, but I kind of expect that. She spends so much time on her own, I would imagine she has a somewhat detached nature. The rest of the cast isn't that bad.
But as a whole, the game is quite the treat so far. Samus is just so bad-ass in this game. Between her dodges and evasions and the ever so awesome lethal strikes, she has never been as athletic or deadly.
The game flows well. You always seem to be introduced to new type of enemies. There are a ton of mini-boss esque encounters. You seem to get upgrades at a fairly decent pace.
And the game looks nice.
