What are your favourite pieces of orchestrated music?

For me there's the obvious/obfious (whatever I am tired) awe inspiring 'Ecstacy Of Gold' that any self respecting Metallica fan should be aware of.

The piece used in Apocalypse Now when the helicopters are flying in to blow stuff up. You know the one.

Then I would say, Von Holst, The Planets.

There are more of course but I wanna know what you think. Are there any more fans of 'Real' music on these boards?

A lot of these are just movements of certain symphonies and concertos, but I can't remember the names of most of the songs. I'm searching some online to check which songs are which because I know which ones I like.

Beethoven:
Moonlight Sonata
Symphony No. 5
Symphony No. 7
Symphony No. 9

Stravinsky:
Firebird

Mozart:
Andante
Allegro
Molto Allegro
Allegro assai
Allegro con brio
Overture
Rondo alla turca

Tchaikovsky:
1812 Overture

Not sure if this next one is quite classical.

Debussy
Clair de Lune

I'm mainly looking all of these up so everyone can explore classical music more. There's some really good stuff.

There's also good stuff by Chopin, Bach, and many others.. I know I played a song by Holst, in high school, and it was really good, but I can't remember the name. It wasn't what you mentioned Ric.

I figured it out. It's the Second Suite in F, all movements. I remember playing that in band in high school, but we only played movements 1 and 4. Even though it's meant for an orchestra, we still played it as just a band. That happens a lot though, where high school bands play orchestra pieces with modified parts. I played sax, so I would have never been in an orchestra, and my school didn't have an orchestra anyway.

I also like Festive Overture by Shostakovich, but I know he wrote some other really good pieces. I just know that one because I also played it.

I don't know too much about classical music and I'm pretty sure most of the stuff I like I first heard from cartoons. But here goes.

Bach - Toccata E Fuga
Bach - Badinerie

Beethoveen - Symphony No. 5
Beethoven - Symphony No. 7

Camille Saint-Saëns - Danse Macabre
Camille Saint-Saëns - Fantasy For Organ
Camille Saint-Saëns - Maestoso-Allegro

Gershwin - Rhapsody In Blue

Mozart - Molto Allegro
Mozart - Eine Kleine Nachtmusik

Prokofiev - Romeo and Juliet Suite No. 2 - The Montagues And Capulets

Ravel - Boléro

Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker - Waltz Of The Flowers
Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker - Dance Of The Sugar-Plum Fairy

Verdi - La Donna A Mobile
Verdi - La Traviata - Libiamo Ne' Lieti Calici

Vivaldi - Four Seasons (think I like all of them...need a refresher)

I just realized I forgot Gershwin, so I came here to post it.

Teuthida already posted Rhapsody in Blue. I also like these two.

Summertime
Fascinating Rhythm

Thanks for posting Bach as well, I couldn't figure out the names of those songs for the life of me. And I also couldn't remember the name of the second mozart piece you posted. This is a good thread.

I have 6 CDs of classical music on my PC, I listen to it pretty often. But don't ask me names or titles. My brother is into that though, recognizes almost every famous piece.

I also like Final Fantasy and Zelda music.

Besides some mentioned here, I'd like to add Nocturne by Chopin and Ride of the Valkyries by Wagner (which I think is the Apocalypse Now thing Ric mentioned, I'm not sure..).

I played Viola for 9 years and Double Bass for 4 so I have built a mild appreciation for symphony music...

Anything by Stravinsky and Dvorak is good in my book, it is dynamic, fun, modern stuff. Stravinsky is actually a bastard, he did some fun things with dynamics and time signatures that were never done before....

Brahms Hungarian Dances are good.

Ravel's Bolero is good.

Paganini's Concerto No. 1 in E Flat Minor is one of my favorites....

Rimsky-Korsakov is another one of my beloved favorites...I love Capriccio Epsagnol and Scheherazade

Lately I've been digesting Schubert's Symphony No. 8 in B minor, D. 759 (unfinished) which is just EPIC.

I do listen to quite a bit of orchestral music, not a huge fan of Opera but I'm trying to get into it.

...and Ride of the Valkyries by Wagner (which I think is the Apocalypse Now thing Ric mentioned, I'm not sure..).

Yeah dude! That's the one. Knew I would recognise it when I saw it ;)

My internet has been down pretty much since I posted this thread so I have not had time to research any more. My problem being that I have a lot of great songs in my head but dont know the names. There's one that comes to mind now that always makes me imagine a heard of wild horses galloping and another that always reminds me of space.

The music in the Stanley Kubrik film 2001 A Space Odyssey is cool.

Since I was Darth vader in the Mafia: Star Wars game I think this piece seems fitting.

And I cant be posting star wars music without including this.

This was on a tv programme today, I had to Shazam it.

Francis Lai - Theme From Love Story

This version is slightly different I think as it is the (Finale) I could not find the 'not finale' but never mind -

Probably my favorite piece.

And it's used between chapters for the audio version of Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book so I've been listening to it quite a lot.

More Saint-Saëns.

Thanks for the input everyone. Ive listened to some of McTrickys work while looking around the board. If you were capable of getting the orchestral sounds out of Edirol, Im pretty impressed by it not to mention being impressed by your work as well = D. I think Ima go with Edirol.
