Based on the oh so tepid reaction to the Man of Steel in the other thread, I thought I would offer up some Superman comics that I've read and enjoyed.

Now mind you, most of these are Elseworld tales so you can read them on their own without knowing too much of the history.

But sure everyone knows the gist of his story.

If you read one story on this list, read

These are just 4 mini-series that deal with the character of Superman/Clark Kent. There are other interesting stories but those bring in characters like Batman and Wonder Woman.

I'll add It's a Bird. Seems most fitting for this Superman hating crowd. The author is assigned to write Superman but he has a lot of trouble identifying with the character (and thus dissects him in every possible way). At the same time he's dealing with his messed up personal life and how Huntington's disease is affecting his family and his state of mind.

All-Star is good for Quitely's brilliant artwork, but I do think the story is very overrated. I got the first hc collection based on reviews and was incredibly underwhelmed, and Grant Morrison is probably my favorite writer of all time.

If you're looking for a good Superman story I would highly recommend Its Superman! (http://www.amazon.com/Its-Superman-Novel-Tom-Haven/dp/0345493923/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237102157&sr=1-2)

Its not a comic book but a novel, but not a normal "comic book novel" that's just a normal comic minus pictures. Its more like what Superman would be like if he were created for novels instead of comic books. Very good.
