Okay so im thinking about getting a PS3. Im considering buying a used 40GB one on Ebay for various reasons, one they are going for just under 300 dollars which is more than a 100 dollar savings off the retail 80 gig version, even more if you include tax. Two, based on what I read on Wikipedia, the 40Gb version still plays Playstation 2 games, unlike the new ones.

So, my questions are:

1. Is there a real reason to believe that 40Gb wouldnt be sufficient storage? I mean I know demos probably take up quite a bit of space, and some games require you to download some data to the hard drive, but is it really that bad? And worst case cenario couldnt I just delete the data from the games I no longer play?

2. Second and more importantly, how reliable is the Playstation 3? Is there good reason to believe that it would be a bad idea to get a used version without a warranty, based on the fact that it might break down? Those of you that have a PS3, have you ever had any problems with them?

I got a used 20gig for really cheap and it's totally been worth it. No problems at all. PS3s are generally well built. I haven't heard of a case where someone had to send it in.

40gigs is more than enough. You won't have to delete game data. I found 20gigs was just barely the limit for me and I have about 18 games. I think 40's more than enough. But then I upgraded to 250 and I've downloaded every demo ever, that's kind of sweet too. :D

Also 40gigs play some PS2 titles, but not all. That's what I've heard. Only the 20gig and 60gig original models had fully-working PS1/2 hardware.

Oh...hm seems your right turns out I either misread the wikipedia article or they changed it...it currently says the 40Gb dosent read PS2 games...oh, and is the north american version the NTSC? Is that correct?

And, can anyone back Dyne up on this? I would kinda like more than 1 opinion here...I absolutley cant get the 20gig version because it dosent have wifi.

I've got a 80Gb one, but I wish I'd got the 40Gb, which was cheaper and had two bundled in games.. 40Gb will be enough for you, unless you want to put your mp3 collection and some movies on it. Which you won't :) Get the 40Gb one.

About backwards compatiblity: not all the 40Gb ones are PS2 compatible. The last batch were, but I don't think the current ones are. As far as I know, none of the current batch of PS3s are PS2 compatible.

And yes, NTSC is American. But there is also NTSC/J, which is Japanese.

Region doesn't matter if you'll only be playing games. PS3 is region-free for everything except DVDs and Blu-rays, I think.

Also yeah, true, the 20-gig doesn't have Wifi - but it has 4 USB ports which is extremely useful for Rock Band. I had to go out of my way to get a wire in the back of it but it's been worth it. It's more reliable than my Xbox 360's wireless, that's for sure.

Well I of course will want to play Blue Rays on it, so I will obviously want a NTSC. Thanks for the information guys.
