With the apparent demise of the Dark Knight, Gotham is now plagued by a lack of a hero.
For three months starting in March, Gotham will see A Battle for the Cowl.

The main contenders to take over the role of the Dark Knight:

Dick Grayson The most well known and likely candidate to take over the mantle of his former mentor.
Tim Drake The current Robin and in some regards, the world's second greatest detective has started to forge his own identity in recent months.
Jason Todd The shunned Robin as it were. The only one of the Caped Crusader's sidekicks to meet his doom at the hands of The Joker. Now back to life (that's a whole another story), will he have what it takes to become The Batman?
Damien Wayne Bruce's son with Talia Al Ghul, the kid is a spoiled little brat and may feel that the mantle of the Bat is his birthright.

Why not just have Jean-Paul Valley do it again?
EDIT: Apparently he's going to have a miniseries sometime between March and May. Might be someone else in the Azrael costume though.
I'm rooting for Tim Drake

Let's really not kid ourselves. Bruce Wayne'll be back in a year, if that.

Well... i guess since Swanny already read.
Bruce Wayne isn't dead exactly.
He is suffering a fate far worse than death.
He is doomed to live out a life.. die and be reborn in a worse one.

Well just as a reminder, this technically begins tomorrow, but if you want a fun read. Check out Gotham Gazette from last week.

I don't see this lasting. Batman is too tied to Bruce Wayne for any of it to stick. Batman IS Bruce Wayne, and vice-versa. Batman doesn't fight for an abstract concept, his motivations are personal, and to remove Wayne from the picture is to utterly create a different character,a nd not simply change an existing one.
They might call him Batman, but he'll just be someone else pretending to be him until Wayne steps back into the role.

I think that's the point.
No one can ever fill the shoes left by Bruce, but on the same hand would anyone want to?
I mean over time he became more jaded and isolated. Though, I think Batman Beyond proved.. at least to me that someone else can fill in the void of Batman because it isn't just about the costume, but the man inside of it.

The Stalker from Batman Beyond equated Batman to be the greatest warrior in every time period and that someone would always take up the mantle...or something like that. Been a while.

We've had no discussion on this, but Battle of the Cowl 1 has already been released, and right now there is someone parading around in the Batsuit that isn't Tim, Dick, or Damien.
It could be Jason or it could be someone else.
With that said, the natural conclusion of the story is already in motion.
There was also another tie-in, and I use the term extremely loosely in the sense that it really doesn't seem to effect the story, but deal with the "character" that took up the mantle the first time Bruce was taken out of the picture.

Just letting you folks know that Battle for the Cowl 2 is out.
And its pretty damn awesome. The payoff is leading where everyone thought, but its a hell of a ride.
GIMMEH!, I say this story is going nowhere too I mean, its obviously gonna go full circle back to bruce.

Well Battle of the Cowl just ended and there were no major surprises. No twists. And well something anyone with half of a brain could have predicted.
