View Full Version : A Penguin in Canada: BreakABone Goes North: The Earl Rufus Story

So BreakABone is using his hard earned vacation time and money to fly out to Vancouver to visit with the West Coast Canada GameTavern crew. He's doing this even despite all the snow we have here and despite the fact that it's colder than a yeti's tit right now.
Discuss.

Well so much for keeping this under the radar.
But yeah, I wanted to get rid of all my vacation before I decide to quit this job or not.
So I took my remaining vacation time and rolled it in with some personal time to make a 2 week voyage to the West.
As Dylflon pointed out, I am going to visit the Canadian Connection or the Sinister Six, whichever they want to go with.
After that, I am heading down to Seattle to visit one of my college buddies for few days. While down there, going to see if could meet the elusive Mr. Gekko.
Then finishing the trip by visiting, Acebot down in LA. And also meeting up with some other folks I know.
And that's the extent of my trip to find out if I still like this job or not.
I'd make the 3 and a 1/2 hour drive to Vancouver, just cuz you seem like such a nice guy....but I can't right now, not with school starting and no money. I hope you have a great trip though, and resolve your job decision.

You could take the time for any of us near Vancouver.
But you don't!

Oh dude...remember years ago when you posted that picture or the fire in Kelowna with that woman on the dock in silhouette? Do you still have that?

Haha driving would need to involve me having a license and a car. :p
Naw, this Penguin knows how to fly.
As for the trip, I've been at work for a little more than 6 hours.
-I've caught 3 residents smoking in their room. Two twice.
First time, they did whatever... then we found a collection of paper all over the room... making for a nice fire hazard.
The second time, he decided it was a bright idea to throw a lit cigarette into a bunch of twigs and leaves.
Really think they are trying to kill me.
-We conducted room searches, and apparently half of them eat in their draws. Another one had a resident piss in his trash can and instead of cleaning it out decided to place it in his closet... was quite the surprise when I had to do his room. :(
-Went to the hospital... again... I've spent more time in the ER in these past few months than I've done for my entire life.
-And I have one day off this week, which they will probably ask me to come in for.
So yeah, I think a vacation is much needed.

Yeah, Penguin's a shady character. Last year for his birthday he gave me an address to mail a present to him...and then I learned it wasn't even where he lives.
Beware you Canada folk. He's going there on business, not pleasure. A penguin would never go so far North into polar bear country without a reason.

haha more of a job update than anything, but we are finally cleaning house it seems.
We got rid of the girl... some of you may remember from my suspension over the summer.
Then another one of the residents, though he wasn't too bad.
We are getting rid of one that pisses me off even more tomorrow. Good times indeed.
Another is going to rehab on his own accord.
Of course not everything is sunshine and raisins when you are me, one of the residents had to go to the hospital to get an emergency supply of scripts, we knew about this since 3pm, but he decided it didn't fit his schedule until 8:30... so yearh 90 mins until I had to go, I get selected to go to the hospital where I sit for the next 3 hours doing nothing. And delayed my packing.

It depends on whether you'll be able to wash. If so, 2 would suffice.
Actually when you can't wash, you can still wear 1 pair for 1 week...
Pants don't get smelly as fast as shirts do.

Nah, I think that was a joke.
Anyway, I used to wear jeans at least twice, sometimes three times and very rarely more, before I'd wash them.
Then I got a serious girlfriend, and I quickly learned the error of my ways.
Now I'm lucky if I wear them twice before I wash them. And in the end, I guess it's better to be wearing clean jeans than dirty ones.
O! How I long for my long-lost days of singledom.
And remember Angrist, I am Canadian:p
And I tend to stretch my Jeans out because I wear them for work so I am not trying to impress people

I was going to go to the Arms on Thursday regardless anyhow - cheap beer night. And I'm all about the cheap beer.

I gonna go with Bube here, I wear my jeans for several weeks, months even, without giving them a wash.
Helps them maintain their original color, and also breaks them in quite nicely. Plus, if I'm gonna be sweating, I'll be wearing shorts anyway, so my bottoms don't tend to stank up.

A: John, I don't drink anymore. I go to cheap beer nights for socailizing with people from high school.
B: Bars in Poco close at 1, not 2. Sometimes earlier depending on how business is going. Downtown they close later.
C: Me and Earl already had discussions about The Arms. I've told him what type of people go there in detail. The main selling point is that he does not have a lot of spending money, and alcohol is relatively cheap.
D: Sam's is nothing special. It's like a pseudo-high-class combination of the The Treehouse and Dewy's.
E: Why not just meet him at Adam's on Saturday? That's the most cost effective way of getting everyone together for sure.
I think it is awesome how a thread about Early Bird has turned into a discusion on pants.
And Adam, bar tonight. Cheap beer. Earl likes cheap beer.

I have like 10 pairs of Jeans, and I wear them twice before washing, but always hang them up after wearing so hopefully they air out any unpleasantness. This has allowed me to have nice looking jeans for around 4 years now since I bought them long ago.
Now if I ever gain weight I'm a dead man.

A: John, I don't drink anymore. I go to cheap beer nights for socailizing with people from high school.
Why don't you drink?
BY THE WAY, when did everyone become a bunch of pansies. Jeans were invented for like cowboys or some shit so you could break them in with your boots and not have to wash them for several weeks because real men don't wash jeans, they do things on ranges and chew spitting tobacco and smoke cigarillos. Seriously guys, what the fuck.
Does this badass wash his jeans:
http://inventorspot.com/files/images/good,-bad-ugly.jpg
I don't think so.
Anyway, I wash my jeans every 3 or 4 weeks, albeit I do not wear them everyday. And I have 3 pairs of jeans, 2 pairs of sweats, and loungey pajama pants.

On the subject of pants, I own about a dozen jeans and so and some basic dress-esque pants like khakis and slacks.
I try to avoid wearing the same jeans more than once every two weeks, which is why I asked to begin with as I only wanted to pack 7 jeans as I would wash them in between my trip. :lolz:
I did go to Arms and really don't know what the big deal is, it wasn't a bad bar. Was pretty well lite compared to the ones I go to at times.

One cup filled to the brim for both of them. First person to sink their ball wins. The other... well had to finish both cups.

Ace explaining his organization system.
There are more pics from Venice and the Vietnamese Culture Night, but getting tired of linking. :p
I will say this about my two hosts since spent the most time with them.
Adam/Combine is an interesting individual. In a way, he reminded me of a small kid, not so much because he was spoiled or slow, but he was just kept so out of the pop culture bubble.
On the same hand, he has a very welcomed sense of humor at least to me. Though, a Canadian trait seems to be answering a question by just restating what was said.
"What is Tim Horton?
Cam: Its Time Horton!"
Watching the Fifth Element with Adam, asked who the bad guy was
Adam: He's that guy.
I got a lot of those "answers"
Now Ace/Allen impresses me, partially because like every other person he introduced me to had some random nickname that he remembered, but also he is a real people's person. I got to see him work twice, and it is an interesting sight to watch.
He has a charm about him that allows people to respect and listen to him, and he gets his way without being too heavy handed. It is an interesting balance.
Well, I think that's all for now. Sadly, I have to return to the real world soon enough.

What the hell are you doing to those chop sticks?!!? Special education Asian cuisine fail?
I can't believe a New Yorker doesn't have chop stick talent.
I can't believe you tried sushi for the first time in Canada.
Jeeeeeeeeeez. :p

He's using two sets of chopsticks to. Sushi is delicious and we just so happen to have a great stock here on the west coast. Vancouver is great for fresh fish, and we have a strong Asian population to keep the market strong and competitive.

Yeah, i'm just sayin New York is like the melting pot of foreign cultures i assume they have some good sushi places. I mean Chicago has decent sushi places, and we are way out in the middle of the country.

I think that's because of being Canadian. As Robin puts it in HIMYM - "The 1980s didn't come to Canada until 1992". :p

Well, I'm sorry if I can't use them.
Sue me...
As for trying it for the first time in Canada, the thought of raw fish (ignoring the whole Penguin thing) is not that tempting to me.
Honestly, I'm not a huge fish person in general... so it was never a priority. While I was there, they insisted (especially Dylflon) that I try it, so I said why the hell not.
I'm sure I could close my eyes... throw a dart on a map and find a sushi place in the city, I just never cared to.
Anything else Mr. KG?

Ahhh, I'm not a big fish person myself...you're seriously my black doppelganger. But anyway, sushi is different than "fish." It has different tastes, textures...and with a little ginger and wasabi mmm mmm.
Anyway, good thing Dylflon insisted you try it, because you should try everything once...open minded is the way to go.
Looks like those canadians are good for something :shakehead

Rape and murder are just two of the many things I will likely never try.
I'd say we're also pretty good for maple syrup, hockey and for having a justifiable condescending attitude towards Americans. :p

Don't know something until you try it Simon. ;)
And don't forget Canadian Bacon....or as you Yanks call it, ham

Is there a difference between Canadian bacon and just 'bacon'?

As Typhoid pointed out (and Swan stated above), Canadian bacon... is pretty much ham... so its unlike "bacon" and more like ham. Same source. Different cuttings.
As for other odds and ends,
We... or some of us... thought it would be a good idea to sing the Power Rangers theme song in PoCo... it was.
Ace... can sing the Pokemon song by heart as he demostrated during the Vietnamese culture night
Nintendo isn't just a secretive company in business, they won't let you anywhere near their headquarters. One of their door is actually manned by a receptionist about 5 mins away... via camera... its a little weird.

Hah, 10 years ago I had a discussion with this guy from school. I've been a veggie all my live, while his friend had become one when she was 13.
He told me that I wasn't a good vegetarian, because I needed to try it before I could refuse it.
So I said: "You have to murder somebody before you can decide not to murder anyone?"
He replied that was different and he'd come up with another example.
He was thinking for 5 minutes, then he gave up. :D

A) You just called a black person your pet.
B) You made him sleep in the corner of the basement.
