What is mafia?
Mafia is a game where you use your wits to decipher who is good and evil among a group of players.
Basic rules:
The "village" consists of all players in the game. Included in the village is a small number of bad guys. The bad guys all know one another at the beginning of the game, but nobody else knows anything about anyone other than themselves.
Each day (normally 24-hour period) the village discusses and publically votes for one person to be executed that night. At the same time, the bad guys choose one person to kill each night and PM the name to me.
The good side wins if all of the bad guys die. The bad side wins if the number of good guys is less than or equal to the number of bad guys (on the assumption that at that point, they control the vote plus get their kill, so it's inevitable).
There will be three "special" roles among the good guys. Exactly who holds each role is only known to that person.
At the end of each round, I will give the details of who died, and whether or not they were a bad guy. Same notification will be given if a good special dies.
Special Roles:
Seer -- once per night can "investigate" a particular person and find out from the narrator if they are a bad guy. They are able to determine a good special as well.
Vigilante -- once per night can kill a person of their choosing.
Guardian -- once per night can protect someone from any death other than execution by the village. They cannot protect themselves.
Ground Rules:
You may not communicate regarding the game with someone who is dead, nor may dead players communicate about the game with active players. Dead players are also prohibited from posting in game threads. The second you read that you've died in the last round, you are no longer able to post in the game with the exception of one goodbye message that has absolutely no game relevant information in it.
You may not use any anonymous method of communication to discuss the game.
You may not use screencaps to "prove" anything to anyone. If I see anyone post a screen cap of their role PM or copy and paste any PM I've given them, they will be removed from the game.
Every player is required to make two game relevant posts (not spam) in every game thread. Each player is also expected to vote every round. Any player who fails to post twice or vote for more than two rounds will be removed from the game.
How to play:
Every player gets to vote for the person they think is evil each round. Good characters generally have nothing to go on but instinct. Evil players however know the identity of all the bad guys in the game and therefore will vote strategically against the good guys.
To vote type in red and bold I !vote [Player name].
You may retract a vote at any time before the round's end and recast that vote. To retract use bold and lime: I !retract [Player name]
There is a voting deadline every round that has to be met. This deadline is 10:59 am PST/1:59 pm Eastern
Any votes or retractions made after that deadline do not count.
Bad players have to decide mutually on a target to kill each round. A representative must PM me their choice before the end of the round.
Same rule applies to the vigilante, the guardian, and the seer. Each must PM their actions before round's end.
Multiple PMs can be sent if you change your mind, I will go by the most recent PM received before the end of the round.
Order of action priority is as follows:
Seer --> Guardian --> Vigilante --> Bad Guys --> Vote
Remember, players cannot be protected from the vote by the guardian. If the player with the most votes dies some other way, the vote will pass down to the person with second largest amount of votes. In the event of a tie, I will flip a coin.
That's all I can think of for now so...
General Story/Narrations:
I will be explaining the event of the story in the form of narration. The narration will be told from the perspective of different player characters. Everyone has been randomly assigned a character position and whether or not they are evil. Your notifications will be PMed to you within the next day.
For the purposes of gameplay, all characters who's perspective we see in narration will treat that character as if they are innocent, even if they're not.
The character roles have nothing to do with the game. They are entirely for thematic purposes. Who was evil as well who was a good guy special was decided randomly after all roles were randomly assigned.
For the narration, I have borrowed thematically from the Song of Ice and Fire series.
PLOT:
Tragedy strikes at a royal wedding. King Neo's eldest son was to be betrothed to the daughter or a highborn lord. Their wedding was cut short however, after a botched assassination attempt intended to kill the entire royal family. However, the only casualty was the young Prince's wife to be.
Poison was the method of murder, and there is believed to be sorcery involved. Those responsible for the death themselves may not know that they're being controlled by an evil force.
It is up to you to find the poisoners and vanquish them.
