The Xbox has had a pretty good first seven months. Having sold a reported 2 million consoles in America, things are not gloomy for Microsoft's Xbox in America. But recent price cuts in Europe and Asia began speculation that the American 'box might be next. While the console has performed well, sales have slowed of late. With Sony's recent statement that there would be no PS2 price cut, a drop in price for Xbox could provide a significant sales boost.
Reuters is reporting that several sources have confirmed Microsoft will announce a price cut of $100 during their Monday press conference at E3. The price cut would take affect later that week, dropping the system down to $199, the same as Nintendo's GameCube and $100 less than the dominant PS2.
Major retailers would not comment on the possible cut and neither would Microsoft. While a cut in price would mean a larger monetary loss for Microsoft with each Xbox sale, the upside may be far too appealing to ignore. Software sales drive the industry, and a larger install base would almost certainly lead to better software sales. If Xbox can show a good number of promising titles at E3, public interest in the console could dramatically increase just in time for the rumored price cut. Factor in that many consumers will be packing department stores next weekend for annual Memorial Day sales and it's hard to find a reason why Microsoft would not cut the price.
We'll have more on this possible price drop as new becomes available.
The Price wars have officially began
This is the last system I need, so I'm more happy about this price drop :)

Just because you'll have all the systems, doesn't mean you won't be biased ;)........ possibly less biased than before I suppose . As for the article, all I can say is, keep them coming :D :p.

Well.. I'm a little biased now, but I don't go around like a fanboy and bash the other consoles.. I mean I plan on getting an Xbox soon, and I'll have a PS2 by next week [hopefully]. Then I'll be less biased than I am now, and at least I'll know what people are talking about in GTA3 :p

I already said something similar to this in the PS2 forum, but M$ will most likely drop to either $249.99 or $199.99, Sony already has, and Nintendo will drop to $149.99, just maaaayyybe $99.99 but that is far too low for them.

I'll be buying an XBox at $199
I'll be buying a Gamecube at $149
I'll be happy knowing I waited for the price drops
:D

I will definitely be getting a GCN when the price drops, but something is still keeping me from getting a PS2. I think its that one bad experience I had with a faulty PS2 (wouldn't load games unless they are in perfect condition), so I think I'll need to play one that works well before I'll suck it up and sink $200 into it, even if GTA3 is one of my favorite games.

I reckon if the price drops for the Xbox, so will the price for the Gc. That is what happened here in Europe.
Either way, this can only benefit the gamers...

Yeah, price cuts are always great for the gamers.
I'm 99.9% positive that Microsoft will drop the price of the Xbox to $200 before or during E3. I mean they have already given notices to retailers to be ready for an annoucement.
But I'm not so sure if the GameCube price will drop, it's still hard to say.

Well, like I said in the thread in the PS2 forum, Nintendo commented on how if Sony dropped their prices at around E3 time, they would have to drop the price for the Gc. Since the PS2 price has officially dropped to $199, and this report of the Xbox price drop coming soon, Nintedo will almost definately slash the price of the Gc.
I guess all will be made clear around E3 time.

I was just at TRU today, the lady at the counter (and no i didnt ask) told me to check out the price on the PS2, andit was indeed 299.99 cnd, i was like, wow, then she proceeded to telling me that microsoft was losing something like 150$ on each box, and that the price cut would cause them to lose more. Then she said that x-box was going the way of dreamcast, she said it lacked in sales, when compared to Gamecube and PS2.
By the way , this is NOT my opinion, this is what she said to me, so dont tell me im biased or something stupid like that.

That may be the way it is in canada, but in north america in general (or maybe it was just the US), Xbox was selling better than NGC for awhile, and NGC just recently started to pull ahead (in weekly sales, not overall...) by a little bit... Basically, if people are considering Xbox to be "selling bad", then NGC isn't either :D
I might have said that already but still :p
Or also it coulda just been that one store... I remember Justin was working at a software etc. before Xmas and he was talking about how they have a ton of PS2s and they're not selling and blah blah blah... and even around here they had a ton of PS2s stacked up everywhere... but it doesn't look like PS2 was selling bad, does it? :D

I know M$ will drop the console....they want market share and then next generation they will look to make money. ( I think TheGAme said that in another thread). But with all these price cuts who benefits the most??
EVERYONE AT GT RESPONDES: THE GAMERS
You damn right and it's about time....btw we all know what the PS2 sales look like world wide ( thanks to Stu's regular updates ;) ) but what about the GC and Xbox sales anyone got those???
Oh yeah and the Xbox going the DC way just doesn't seem likely...well not in North America.....it might take time to catch on in Japan ( if it ever catches on and I hope it does, more competetion means the gamers benefit , as we are seeing in this price war...soon enough it'll be a game war;) )

Ok, probably the lady you were talking to was fifty pounds over weight, under payed, and over worked. Maybe you should direct her in the way of the nearest hospital and save her life.
In other words... Sony will also begin to lose more money on the PS2 now that there was a $100 price cut. But what the theory is lose money on the console, make money on the games. I believe it's called the razorback theory or something like that.

When talking to retailers about console sales, always take it with a grain of salt. I remember when I was looking at what console to buy, I went to FYE (For Your Entertainment) which used to be a big music chain I believe. Anyway, the guy there told me that the XBox wasn't even as powerful as the PS2 and that retailers wouldn't be able to get you one until January or February (this was in November) because Microsoft wasn't going to be able to produce them very quickly. I was bummed.
The I went to EB and they told me that the XBox was more powerful and that they would be getting in fresh XBox's in a semi-daily basis.
When I asked the EB guy about what the FYE manager said, he told me that FYE just didn't have a good relationship with MS, they wouldn't be getting many XBox's and that they were trying to push the PS2, which they had plenty.
Moral: Don't believe a friggin word retailers tell you.:D

Well peoples were right about the PS2 price drop being "Tomorrow" (as in Tuesday after the news was posted on Monday), maybe they're right about the Xbox one... Sony drops their price to 200 and MS counters a day later with the same price drop :D
"The price of the system will reportedly be cut to $199, though Microsoft officials were unavailable for comment as of press time. Check back Wednesday for more details."
