But seriously, did anyone else know a much of the MBP batteries are defective?

Mine was. Got it replaced for free under the extended warranty.

I'm waiting for September 9th to see if new models are being replaced before I buy one.

I really don't appreciate that Apple didn't send me a letter or even email me concerning my defective battery.

It would be bad for the reputation. When Dell has a defective battery and calls for massive recalls people get upset. I'm being half-way cynical, I'm sure Apple mentioned it somewhere.

Apparently they put a small blurb on their website, which I don't consider sufficient.

I read mac websites on a somewhat regular basis. That's how I learned of it.
