View Full Version : Team Fortress 2: A Heavy Update

We are about a week away, gentlemen, (PC gamers anyway) and this update sounds amazing:
We've been a little quiet for the last week as we've put the finishing touches on the Heavy update. We thought the Pyro pack was the biggest we'd be doing for a while, due to the large changes to the Pyro, but the Heavy update has turned out to be even bigger. In addition to the three unlockable weapons and thirty-five achievements for the Heavy, we've got a new game mode with five new arenas for it, a new Payload map focusing on more open spaces than Goldrush, and another popular community-made map. Throughout the rest of the week we'll be giving you the details on all this, and if all goes well, you'll have your hands on it shortly afterwards.
The community-made map included in the Heavy update is cp_steel, by Jamie 'Fishbus' Manson. After the Pyro update we received a lot of email telling us how wrong we were in our choices, and cp_steel was an easy next choice due to the way it dominated the suggestions. If you're firing up your email right now to tell us that we never get anything right, please include suggestions of what map(s) we should be looking at next.
We'll be updating A Heavy Update site with more info daily. Stay tuned!

7 new maps, another update for one of the classes...and all for free. Man, online gaming on the PC totally rocks, I would hate to have the console version of TF2.
So does this mean everyone will be playing as a heavy for the next few weeks? Because I might have to try to beat my previous head shot record now.
Actually, the console version of TF2 is awesome. Because we have lots of friends. :)

They just updated the Heavy site with the names of all the new achievements and the Heavy's first unlock weapon: the K.G.B.
Boxing gloves. :)
The Heavy needs a timed speed boost or something, like cloak for the Spy.

Any chance of updates like this coming for the console? And NO, this post is not an invitation to try and get me to get the PC version...

There are 2 others if im not mistaken. In addition to a crap load of levels too. All of which are PC exclusive.

I think thats kind of crap. There is a very rabid console following out there and for Valve to just ignore them is pretty absurd. I'd PAY for downloadable content that PC gamers get for free. And its not that I have anything against PC games, in fact I am historically a PC gamer before console because of my love of strategy, but I just like FPS on console more.
Don't ignore me because of that preference.
It's probably an issue between Valve and Microsoft as to how to deliver the content.

Bond is probably 100% right. I'm not sure how Microsoft handles massive updates like the ones that Valve are doing.
I think Valve is giving love to all the PC gamers who have waited 10+ years for a Team Fortress sequel. Team Fortress was a Quake mod...Quake...that was like eons ago. Team Fortress Classic was pretty awesome, but after playing Team Fortress 2 I can't even play TFC without cringing.
Anyway, maybe in some distant future online gaming on consoles will be more third party friendly.

I understand your sentiments (don't understand how you can enjoy an FPS on a console more though :P). I do think Valve has stated that they plan to bring all of the updates to the 360 version, it just doesn't seem to be happening any time soon. I'm not sure about the differences between how the PC version is coded and how the 360 version is coded, either, I have no idea how much work it is to translate those updates over to the Xbox.

I've gotten that reaction a lot, and I suppose my reasoning is that console FPS's tend to be much more tactile. You feel the controller in your hand, it runbles and kicks. I also tend to be fumble fingers with a keyboard, and its frustrating to die because you meant to bring up a mini-gun, but hit machete instead...

I have that problem in some First Person Shooters...you can easily combat that problem by using the mouse's scroll wheel. I do most of my weapon switching in TF2 with the scroll wheel. But, I also like having the row of 9 hotkeys on my keyboard, an advantage no controller will ever be able to top. It comes in handy in games like Serious Sam where you have 7 or 8 different guns and you need to constantly use all of them.
Team Fortress keeps the weapon situation simple...you have your tier one weapon, when that runs out of ammo you can use your shotgun, and when that runs out of ammo you can melee. Of course, usually I don't run out of ammo, I just run out of a clip. But that's why you have a shotgun.

I thought the plan was always to wait for content because there is a long, drawn out certification process on the 360 so it wouldn't make sense to do it for every update.
i would look for vavle to try and bring the update to 360 as 1 big update, rather then one at a time like they are for PC, (which does bring some problems, but has to be done really)
but valve is strongly against charging money for the downloads they think should be free.
and they're a PC company and this is a PC game, they damn well better support the PC first and foremost.
now with this update, a new gametype with new levels... This brings up 1 question...
Will they bring back ENGBAT from the original TF with the Engy update!?!?!?
omg i will go nuts if they do, that was soooo much fun back in the day.
Here's Hoping!
BTW, if a controller is the only thing stopping you from getting the PC version... Why wouldnt you just get the PC version and plug a 360 controller into the PC and use it? works exactly the same. *shrug*

I used to have that problem, since I'm primarily a console gamer, but after a few days of playing I got down the key positions by instinct. I remapped some of the keys a little, and I think I play differently than most people. I use A,S,W,D to move, but then I have my primary weapon on Q, secondary on E, and melee on F. If I'm a spy or Engi then I just use 4 and 5 for the other things, since you don't need those as much in the heat of combat. I just couldn't get used to the "switch to last weapon" thing most people use, I want to be able to jump to the exact thing I need exactly when I want.
And about plugging your controller in...not a bad idea except you wouldn't have fun because no matter how good you are with a controller you're always going to get pwned by the people using a mouse.

yes you would get slaughtered, but at least you'd be playing with the big boys then. ;)
E D S F to move FTW! :D then a switches to secondary weapon, g switches to main weapon, most others are done by mouse, jump, fire, secondary fire, special weapon, disguise.
oh, i bound the engys build keys and destroy keys so i dont have to switch to the build menu at all., same with spys disguise :)
KillerGremlin

Considering the amount of time I spend as an Engi, you would think I would have bound the main keys by now. I'm really apathetic, and the "1," "2," and "3" keys are right above the "W" so it's not hard to access my 3 main weapons.
In regard to my running out of ammo comment...typically this is big when you are a soldier. You get 4 shots with your rocket, plus 6 shotgun shots, plus your shovel. That is more than enough to kill anyone in a 1 vs. 1 situation (except for maybe a Heavy). Typically, if I squeeze off 4 rockets and my opponent is still alive, I toggle to shotgun and attempt to finish them off.
This usually works pretty well...you won't believe the amount of people who sit there reloading rather than pulling out their shotgun while I take easy shots at them.
Lately, I've been getting in the habit of firing 3 rockets at my opponent, and then using my shotgun. This seems to be slightly more tactical against experienced players because they assume I'm out of rockets. Then they do something stupid like run at me and I pull out rocket number 4 and bam!
I really really hate Pyros now, especially the ones with the flare gun. I can't wait for the Scout/Soldier/Sniper updates.

not really elitism, there are just a couple game types that are just all around BETTER in every way on PC. just the way it is.
everything else better to have a console for.
now that will probably change if the console makers start noticing some things. but as of right now thats that. which PS3 has already started the process (mods/control options)
i played some of TF2 on 360 at a friends couple weeks ago. and i dont see how people even stand it. and this is my favorite game we're talking. but right away you get non stop kids screaming and yelling into thier mic, singing, being just as annoying as possible. i unplug the mic. and the stupid thing comes out the TV speakers insted, ARGH!!!
then 8vs8? wow, thats an empty server on the PC version. i normally play 16 vs 16.
then game looks better, runs smoother, more custamizable, free updates...
and you dont think the pc players have a right to call it better? :P
but yea, from what i've played on the console version. any team that can even REMOTELY work as a team will slaughter any other team on the console... because how you get any random team to work together on the console is beyond me.
PC online community is just so much more mature.

Yea, this argument has been brought up before here, i just don't agree with it, i dont believe crippling the controls should be what determines the difficulty of something. Controls shouldn't add the challenge, the opposing players should.
but on that point, yes its easier to quickly point and shoot with a sniper using a mouse, however, its much easier for all the other characters to move around, dodge those shots and kill the sniper back.
So honestly it would even that out.
Now, a mouse sniper in the land of all controller users, yikes. but then again, sentries seem cheap on the console.
This is just such a nonsensical discussion, which really should result in: no one fucking cares.
Some people enjoy the game on the console, while others enjoy it more on the PC. Who fucking cares?
its a gaming forum man, who cares about 90% of the stuff talked about? that's all it is, just discussions about gaming, none of it goes anywhere.

Bungie always claimed that the guys playing Halo with a mouse + keyboard were just as even as the guys playing with the Xbox controller. I never bought into it. Maybe the console evens out by giving players the auto-aim feature? I consider myself to have spent my fair share of time playing Halo. I was obsessed. I own both the console and PC version, and needless to say, the game becomes a lot easier with keyboard + mouse.
The thing about a game like TF2 is that there is a lot of "twitch" movement. At least in my gameplay style. I don't think I could rocket jump over someone, rotate 360 degrees, and then fire a rocket at that person before precisely landing while using a controller.
Anyway, I guess I am a PC-elitist. I guess I'm jaded from the 4+ years playing Counter-Strike, the ultimate online PC FPS.

I'm actually not a twitch shooter, I'm terrible at it. I guess my reflexes aren't fast enough or my hand is just too shaky. It's what makes me a bad Scout and an even worse Sniper. One of the reasons I like TF2 is that twitch shooting, for most of the other classes, isn't important. Strategy and tactics are.
My play style and shooting style revolved more around prediction and timing, guessing how the enemy is going to move. I think it makes me a good demoman, for some reason predicting the arc of a grenade and having it land directly on a guy I see coming is so much easier for me than trying to aim a sniper rifle or get the bead of a pistol on them.
Playing soldier for me is kind of the same. I shoot my rockets at the ground where I think an enemy is going to be. I'll fire one rocket to the right, and immediately launch another to the left of them. A lot of people will dodge right into it.

I'm actually getting quite good at close-range sniping...I have shaky hands too. I find that in TF2 a lot of sniping duels simply come down to reaction time. The jump strafe isn't that valuable for Snipers in TF2 imo. Unfortunately you have to charge your shot, so most people who strafe or jump out from behind a corner might be able to snipe you, but it often doesn't kill you. And then you get your shot :D .
I like the Soldier, I still haven't got the nuances of the Demoman. When I play as a Demoman I usually just spawn camp with stickies or set up traps to bait Pyros.
I fucking hate Pyros. Did I mention that?

As a result, Natascha's great against fleeing cowards, such as Scouts & Medics
haha...so the Heavy is still going to be vulnerable to Sniper fire...sucks for them still. However, I can see having 2 or 3 Heavy's on defense in Goldmine being tactically useful now. Especially with a dispenser nearby...you can slow down the enemy and leave them open for Snipers and Soldiers to pick off. Nice.

Yeah, I think making Heavy's better against Sniper's, or making them faster, would be undermining the idea of the class. These updates and new weapons are all supposed to be alternatives to the original, not better. So far I like the Heavy's updates.
The Heavy should have a special ability (bulimia) to make him faster for a short period of time.

I can't stand playing as a heavy because he is too freakin' slow. There are days when I can't stand playing as a soldier either...sometimes it is nice to have the mobility of a Scout or a Pyro.
Heavys are good for rushing capture points, and they make a decent mobile defense when defending capture points. Of course, a Heavy without a Medic is mostly useless.
of course...i never play as a Heavy so maybe I underestimate the value of the class...I just know that I've beat down my fair share of fatties with the baseball bat.
I agree, KG. I consider TF2 a fairly fast-paced game, and the Heavy just kind of ruins it for me. Nothing worse than having to slowly walk to the second control point where the rest of your team already was 10 seconds ago.

Regarding the Heavy, I think it depends. In most games, especially on consoles, you're dealing with people thrown together who aren't even attempting to work as a team.
BUT, in the rare cases you have a solid unit, Heavy/Medic, Pyro, Soldier, Spy combo is devastating. Hell, just a Heavy/Medic and Spy is devastating to any set of defenses is run correctly.
As for the difficukty argument, I sympatize with the controls adding difficulty if they're just difficult, but the console controls for TF2 are VERY balanced. Personally, I can't roll Sniper and be any good. I'm just not that dextrous. But I've played against Snipers who were nigh untouchable on the 360, to the point that one Sniper has changed the way a game of 2Fort or Dustbowl is played as they can pick apart people in mid-air even.
If you can master the controls, its not simply difficult because of the controls, it becomes a part of mastery of those controls. My mind is more strategic than twitchy, so my talents lie in interesting offensive sentry placement. Ever get a fully upgraded sentry/dispenser and teleport up right outside the main spawn point of your enemy in 2Fort? I have... and its both hard as hell and HILARIOUS when you succeed.
heavy/medic combo isnt really that great.
for all out destruction, heavy/pyro is much better.
for taking out a bunch of sentrys in a room, heavy/demoman cleans em up.

I agree that the medic/heavy combo isn't that great aline, but as the centerpiece of a frontal assault, they are what the tank is to an infantry unit.
If we're pairing medics with anyone solo, I'd go for Soldiers, or a heavy is the area your trying to clear is tight. The first cap in 2fort is an excellent example ofhoe devastating the heavy/medic uber combo can be.

well im mainly talking about ubers.. now a medic staying behind a heavy and healing him works great and is what should be done.
however once that uber is reached, you want it to count for the most devastation possible. and for that you need a pyro (or a demo if there's a lot of sentries)
a soldier is good for the krits thing, (the other special instead of the uber... erm consoles don't have that update. but what it does is the medic can charge someone with a kritskrieg thing instead of the uber, so every shot is a critical) if there's a lot of people, use that on a soldier and he can clean up. or even a heavy, but only if a lot of people are there, it doesn't really help with sentries.

Uber Pyro rush, especially at the beginning of a match, is the best IMO. No one clears a place faster or sends people running faster. Only problem is if there's two or more SG's, they can push the pyro back.
yea. 2 close together sentries is about the pyros limit.. he can still push in and get to em, but it eats a lot of time to push close enough.

I was playing pyro earlier today, and I walked around a corner right when an enemy heavy started eating. There weren't many people on the map yet, so I stared at him for a second, then torched him. :D

I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the arena gameplay....it's like Counter-Strike only with slightly weaker design elements. And, nothing is more boring than watching a fight between Heavy/Medic-Red vs. Heavy/Medic-Blue. No one dies...everyone sits around shooting at each other for 7 minutes...
Pyro and Solider are my two favorite arena classes. Pyro has speed and mobility, plus fire in close quarters is a real killer. The Solider is good because he can rocket jump, has range, and can kill pyros.
its more like rocket arena then it is counterstrike. kinda cuz thats where counterstike came from. hehe
its pretty fun, i like playing it while i wait to get into a server thats full. good little time killer. and someone is going to die between two heavy medics.. medics cant heal fast enough to keep em up.
the new map with the new environment is a very fun map. and looks amazing. i really really hope they make a payload map in that environment soon. the scenery is beautiful, i took a screenshot (minus the hud) of the little cliff with the trees and the mountain in the background, made it my background. :D

Very cool. If the resolution was a bit higher I'd use it too.

yea, 19inch monitor, so 1440x900 is its optimal setting. things dont look good if ya push it up more.
i plan on getting a new bigger monitor soon. :)

Going to take the PC side on this thing
We are getting these updates months later. Probably with god knows how many bugs to work out in time and we are paying for it.
I don't see how we are winning here.
But I will probably get the update anyway.

Listen Debbie Downer, why don't you go eat a sad-sandvich elsewhere and let us who have been waiting for this enjoy it. Its better than not getting it at all.

Oh there is a god! :D
good news for 360.
problem is, and im sure valve knows this and is being forced to it cuz ms wont let it be a free update..... is that they will be splitting their userbase there will be many that wont get the update, and many more that will.
so either both halves wont be able to play with each other, (first half definitely wont be able to play new maps)
OR, which i'd hope they'd do would be to allow everyone to play together on maps they all have, and just have the new features unusable to people unless they purchase it. so you'll have people running around with the new weapons against people that cant get em because they didnt pay for update. which would make more people get the update to be on par.
BTW, axtinguisher is really not that great.. sadly none of the pyros new weapons are an update anymore. the new flamethrower used to be good because it gave a health boost. but they took that away. so the new flamethrower just gives you crits from behind and doesnt have the air burst, but the air burst is far far more useful than having crits from behind.
