fake edit: for those of you who don't know why this is such a big deal, this is the firmware every PS3 owner has been waiting for since launch.. In-Game XMB, Trophies, etc. The best part about all these videos is the fact that it's utilized so much better than XBL's In-Game Guide.

It some cases they just throw it out as fast as possible, like the gyro controller. I don't see very many truly unique things coming from them.

You say they're better than achievements, but Live has had those forever. You've been waiting since launch for this, but Xbox did have it at launch.

I'm not anti Sony or anything, I own a PS2 and I'd have a PS3 if I had the money, but I'm not about to sing praises or act like they did something cool when they mostly just copied and enhanced existing technology. It's a nice feature and I'm glad PS3 gamers are getting it, but it's a little annoying to hear people act like Sony has done something incredible.

Not that their the only ones, though, I think Sony and Microsoft are both copying the Mii system with some upcoming software. Which is good, technology is meant to be shared and adapted, but it's also going to be annoying when those come out and people act the same way, and Sony and Microsoft present them like it was their idea, much like that guy in this video is acting like Sony invented the first ever Trophy system.

Well MS did have a patent on the In-Game Guide I just read a minute ago. So maybe Sony had to find a way around that which they did. I'm not denying that it's a "me too" thing, but I don't mind it when they say "me too" and kick the shit out of the previous best.

What's so much better about Trophies? I couldn't really tell from the video. I don't think I like the menu system though, I think Xbox Lives is much prettier and easier looking to navigate.

Being able to get Trophies and look at other peoples and compare will be free, won't it? I would say that's a pretty nice improvement. (Unless that's also a free feature on Xbox, I'm not sure, I've only ever used Xbox Live a few times when I was at home on my brother's 360).

Trophies aren't what I'm talking about really. You get full access to the XMB by pressing the button. It moves quickly and seamlessly unlike the guide on the 360 which chugs along at times.

Not to mention the fact that it's on par with the 360 now, if not better, and it's all available for the low price of $0 a year as compared to $50 a year.

Word on the street is that, as a way to prevent people from cheating the system, the Trophy app will not search for pre-existing data. meaning that you have to accomplish the goal after the patch is patched. So, if this is true, and if it means I have to beat DMC4 on HoH difficulty again, and get my BB emblem on MGS4 again then I will be kinda disappointed. Though I'll prolly end up doing another BB run eventually anyway.

I guess it makes sense, that way you couldn't just download gamesaves before the Trophies come out and have it recognize that file as your own, but still..

Yeah I heard about that too. I'm ok with it, it just means that I'll have to play R&C again (no problem), Heavenly Sword again (no problem), MGS4 again (no problem), finally finish Uncharted (no problem), etc. Luckily I loved all of these games so much that I can play them again with no worries. I am totally open and willing to replay all of them. :D

So, about this XMB... are you now able to send messages across games, etc?

Yessir, it's basically the Xbox Guide but a bit different. Instead you get the whole main menu (XMB :P) for the PS3 and you do all that stuff, custom soundtracks, in-game messaging, friends list, trophy list, trophy comparisons with friends. The only really notable things it's missing are cross game invites and in-game private chats.

But really, it makes paying for XBL a lot harder to do when you know you can have all of it for free.

I was watching the video flunkie posted and it looks like the developers did a good job of utilizing all the space they have. That's an issue I have with the 360 dashboard. It extremely under utilizes the space, and I really don't like the advertisements.

I'm not too sure why there aren't cross game invites, but you can see what your friends are playing. They did see that they are working on it though.

It's really not too bad seeing as all you have to do message a friend saying, "want to play MGO?" and they can respond either way. And if they want to play then joining in your match is completely easy.

I think we're trying to mostly introduce this console to these forums because before my arrival I'm sure you count on one hand how many threads popped up here that related to the PS3.

4 pages of "woohoo it's almost out" worked for us because who else was coming in here? Surely nobody else besides Vampyr for a bit and Dyne for 1 or 2 posts.

This place has been since I arrived here 1 big Wii/360 circle jerk. And I sat back not having the chance to talk about my favorite console because really, who here gave a shit about it? Now a few of us have arrived and some have emerged and now we have our chance to do what you guys do for the other consoles.

So here's how it goes, we make the thread, and as usual 95% of GT could care less because it has to do with the PS3. The we get it, we love it, and we say that. Well, the next day Sony retracts the firmware or as you say "messed up" when in fact all they did is retract it because part of the firmware download was botched for some people and they are actually fixing it immediately (unlike MS who will make your ass wait for their next seasonal update) and you guys all come out of nowhere with this anti-Sony/PS3 bullshit. Is it totally necessary for that anyways? Because myself, uber, and flunkie could care less if it was retracted because our firmware is working perfectly and we think it's great of Sony to be fixing it so promptly.

Now, I can understand some console ribbing and whatnot, this is a gaming forum. But why is it that me and flunkie are heckled about the same shit going on on here by this forums damn "Gaming side" Moderator? And I know this doesn't apply to you guys and it's separate from here but we have to put up with this shit so much that it gets very annoying because it's a constant barrage. flunkie ended up blocking BaB on AIM yesterday because his shit just wouldn't end, and it's that fanboy ignorance that pisses flunk and ourselves off.

And then when we make some peace in this thread and discuss the PS3 some and all is well BaB goes and makes a post in the podcast exploratory thread about changing the name of the podcast to "2.4 failure". Why, was a peaceful resolution in here not enough? Guess not.

Honestly, is fanboyism still relevant? I was probably the most avid supporter of Wii60 back in the day and then I got a PS3. Nothing really changed for me. Sony is still a bad company who makes bad decisions sometimes. But the games are getting better, which is why the PS3 is slowly gaining ground. And games are all that matters.

:tiphat: Honestly, is fanboyism still relevant? I was probably the most avid supporter of Wii60 back in the day and then I got a PS3. Nothing really changed for me. Sony is still a bad company who makes bad decisions sometimes. But the games are getting better, which is why the PS3 is slowly gaining ground. And games are all that matters.

I agree. I had a 360/Wii. Nothing on the PS3 interested me the slightest, the only game that made me buy it was MGS4. It will get better in the year, and should be interesting to see how it all pans out for Sony.

Oh and Nintendo have pissed me right off with SSB Brawl. They offer to "CLEAN" the lens which is absolute bs, and it's been 1 week+ since logging the ticket with em, and still no parcel to send the Wii back to em!

That really is BS. I had some problems a couple of weeks ago with HP. My laptop stopped working (and I discovered they had issued a recall for the exact problem I was having) and after sending it in, they called me and tried to tell me the keyboard was broken, the screen was broken, and all this other stuff which had never happened, and wanted to charge me $728 for it. They said I could either do that or they would send it back.

I basically kept calling every day and asked for a case manager, and eventually got them to fix it for free.

Moral of the story: aggravate the crap out of them.

Here is the official Sony press release as to the problem and fix:

"The PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) system software version 2.41 is now available for update from July 8, 2008. With this update, we have fixed the problem that prevented a limited number of PS3s from activating properly after updating to version 2.40, when certain system administrative data were contained on the HDD.

For those users who have updated to version 2.40 and have experienced the problem that XMB™(XrossMediaBar) is not appearing, or no images are displaying on the screen, please contact Customer Service.

We have confirmed that for those users who have successfully updated to the version 2.40 and are able to activate the PS3 system, this problem will not occur on your PS3.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused you and appreciate your understanding and continued support.”
